    It's been 5 years since my last dedicated X5D video. And I spent the past time creating some new sounds. No huge updates but some useful sounds. Also I created quite some new demo tracks. Others are older, and a few were updated.
    These demo clips were recorded in program or combi mode and layered in software. Kicks, FX and other drums are software too, except for when UnivDrKit is used (excluding the kick). Occasionally there's been some EQing and in very rare cases additional reverb. Also dynamics and mastering was applied.
    This sound set is 100% compatible with Korg X5D and X5DR. It works with X5 and 05R/W too but not all sounds work. With the old SED-02W editor you can also load it in your NS5R but I can't provide support for it.
    All existing songs are written in the bottom right corner.

    Purchased an X5D in 1997. Loaded JayBs sounds with original editor and still having fun with this Korg twenty five years later.

    How in the hell you create these sounds with these synths. Can't imagine how much tweaking you had to do. Incredible, great work.

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic 2 роки тому +16

      Programming Korg synths which are built on the ai2 engine such as the X5-series really is not as difficult as you might think. Hardest part is learning where everything is in the settings, which can be really annoying if you don't have a PC based editor. But once you learn just about every Korg PCM synth from the M1 to the HD-1 engine on the Kronos becomes your friend - at their core they all work the same way, with each new generation just adding more things to tweak :-)

    I can't believe the sounds you created with this old digital workstation

    1992, I started interning with a friend of my father's who ran a 16 track studio. He had one keyboard workstation: a Yamaha V50. He let me take it and the manual home every night for a week. I started programming my own sounds with it, layering sounds and "putting it to work." I told him I can't believe a studio only has one keyboard. His reply? "It's not what you have, but what you do with what you have." Don't underestimate the little modules. I don't anymore.

      I had only a Korg 05RW and Yamaha CS1x/2x, and the 1990s went to Sam Ash and talked to the sales rep and enthusiastically pressed play on my walkman and let her listen to my sounds. She was like, if you send the tape to a studio they might hire you. I really never pursued it, but I still have the sounds she listened to and some more. Learning how to program crap keyboards teaches you to be really an expert at pulling out the sound. So when I was exposed finally to powerful keyboards it was like Boom! I quickly figured out what the keyboard was good at, focused on that, and kept hammering away at its strengths and finally it gave away the beauty. Yes, don't ever let a module fool you. Inside that little box is power.

      @@mark12011972 Words to live by bro. I revamped my studio after 13 or so years. I produce a little bit of everything. I was always a Roland guy. I recently added Korg to my lineup. I love hardware more than vsti's. My whole setup: roland Fantom xr, jv1080, jd990, jv880, d550, s760, jp8000, xp80, xp30, jv1010, dj70, Korg Triton rack, TR rack, 01w, x5dr, waveatation sr, m1 ms2000r, Yamaha motif es rack, tg500 ,tx7 (dx7 desktop module), Kurzweil pc2r, Emu proteus 2000 and a Alesis qsr. VSTI: Omnisphere, Dexed, every sample from Digital Sound Factory and other vari I can't remember. I have a little more to go before the rewire/remodel is done. PS, I "might" add a Midas 32ch digi board to mix all the sound module and keep the Focuarite Saffire Pro 40 only for mics, real acoustic guitar, electronic guitar, bass and drums.

      @@BoeingJetTech I have CS1x(Qty:2), CS2x-hypnotic pads, 05RW(2) - bells/dreamy, Emu Procussion(2)-industrial, Boss VF-1(2), VFx-pads, FX2000, EMU ESI-32 (2), VS890-just for voice effects, SP-808. These are most valued just 'cause I pulled the best sounds from them. For mixdown/recording: DR4d(2), PL1602 rack mixer(2), Kawai rack mixer(2), Technics SH-8017 Equalizers (3). Also, experimenting with computer recording however only the drums and rhythm via midi, and then slave my two DR4s. But I dont do my best stuff on the computer. For example my totally (by far) best lyrics come to me when I'm half asleep and not thinking about anything.

      @@BoeingJetTech Always looking for that 'better sound' until I discovered that I can modify my equipment (replace capacitors and audio outputs). Some of the outputs on my rack mixer are much brighter and clearer (the ones I replaced) and then I realized that the metal inside the jacks probably no longer makes as good connection from years of plugging and unplugging cables. I have no fear and take apart everything I own and has worked great for me. Today I ordered thirty 3Pin 1/4" 6.35mm Mono Phone Jack / Jack Socket, and my cheap rack mixers are going to get some new outputs. This is what I'm now doing to get further sound improvement in my studio. Also maybe replace the capacitor in my 80s cabinet speakers but I'm kind of lazy, don't much feel like moving those dern things.

    This soundset is literally the only reason why I haven't switched from X5D. I play in an electronic-rock band, we use a lot of EDM and Trance stuff, and if I would upgrade to anything better I would loose these sounds which are absolutely essential to me. Thank you for these magical sounds. My upgrade options are the synths you use, haha, since they have those amazing soundsets.

    This is a synth I think we slept on back in the day... Some of these sounds were what I bought an Access Virus for. I thought that the Trinity/X5D synths were like the Roland XP-80 synths of the same era that were just ROMplers with some occasional magic. Very well done mate.

      Thanks! Yes, those synths are more powerful than one might think. But on the other hand there's also a lot of tricking and disguising weaknesses with tons of reverb and delay. You should check out my video "Corgi" to see what X5DR and NS5R can do when combined.

    Fantastische Sounds und Kompositionen, wie immer, JayB - bin schon lange ein Fan und nutze dein Sound Set (aktuell noch die Vorgängerversion, die neue kommt natürlich umgehend drauf) auf einem 05R/W, der mir seitdem wieder mächtig Spaß bereitet und Inspiration beschert! Vielen, vielen Dank für deine Mühe und mach weiter so! Ich finde es unglaublich spannend zu hören und selbst erspielen zu können, was man dieser alten Hardware an Sounds entlocken kann. Einfach irre und vielleicht ja noch nicht einmal das Ende der Fahnenstange... die Messlatte wird ja von dir kontinuierlich angehoben! ;-)
    Zwei Fragen hätte ich an dich:
    1) Könntest du erwägen für zukünftige Versionen deines Sound Sets für den X5D ggf. weitere Split-Varianten zu erstellen, sofern noch Platz dafür frei ist? Viele deiner Sounds harmonieren super miteinander und würden als Splits sehr gut kommen.
    2) Kann es sein, dass du das Demovideo der Vorgängerversion offline genommen hast? Falls ja, könntest du das bitte für interessierte Personen noch einmal online stellen? Mir gefielen einige der Songs/Improvisationen davon sehr gut - hatte sogar kürzlich angefangen mehrere davon einzustudieren... und nun ist das Video weg.
    Danke! :-)

      Frank Carvalho made Hammond patches for free to be downloaded years ago, using an oscilloscope side by side comparing the Korg with his Hammond L100. The only bad new is that, considering the X5 D/r can only handle up to 8 presets in combo mode, You can "only" use 8 virtual drawbars instead of 9. An "All Out" drawbar preset, as instance, can't be used, but if You don't mind go to this page and click on the three green titles, You can download the patches together with pipe organ too and Genesis patches. Hope this makes You happy!😊

      you definitely need to try Yamaha TG500/SY85 ... same FAT character like X5DR but better raw wav, RESO filters and more!!! (one of the best digital filter like analog) and i think better sound core than QY70/100 .. if you like same soft pleasant and warm stuf

    Amazing!! I bought keys X5 after this video. But, сan you tell me, is it possible to link the cuttoff effect to the velocity on X5?

    • @JayBmusic
      @JayBmusic  4 роки тому

      Yes, it's possible to assign velocity to cutoff frequency via filter EG.

    • @MrSheleh

      @@JayBmusic But I didn't find cutoff among the list of effects.

      Because Cutoff isn't an effect, it's part of the sound architecture. Labeled as Fc in the VDF section.

    Sounds great man! As the X5D offers Korg's acclaimed Ai2 sound engine from the 01/w series, would these patches also be compatible with the 01/W?

    • @JayBmusic
      @JayBmusic  3 роки тому

      They might be partial compatible depending on the available waveforms and effects.

      @@JayBmusic Not entirely positive still, but pretty sure Korg just dropped the entire O1 PCM sample set into these later synths. I've done a ton of manual conversions between the O1 and the X5DR, O3 and O5, and never run into any issues. Never had the time to do a full sample-sample comparison though.

    Hi, I have a KORG X5D and would like to have your sound set - you mention on your website the makes of compatible MIDI to USB interface leads that are suitable for the file transfer - could you specify a actual model number please? Or link to one that definitely works? I am in UK so eBay / Amazon fine

      ESI MIDI Mate, Roland UM-One, Yamaha UX-16. Those are the ones I know are working. M-Audio and Swisssonic are known to be incompatible.

    Ever considered getting a Korg Wavestate? Yeah, it only has 3 octaves, but I have a feeling you could bust open its capabilities and make a super nice soundset for it
