Sandy, the pride you feel in your cabin is well earned and deserved. I am sure your mill has more than paid for itself. It is no small thing to cut the trees down, bunk them up, mill them into lumber and THEN build something so substantial with that lumber. The amount of labor to build a project like this by yourself not to mention the recording of the effort, wow. As for the ladder, there are a lot of options, and I am sure you will find one that works out great; even if it is just to leave it the way it is or to allow for removing it completely and hang it on the wall.
Yep, there's nothing in the world better than standing back and saying..., "I Built That!" Thus far, I've gone back and watched the first 37 videos of the build, so let me get back to watching the 'before' of what you've just shown us. Outstanding job, Sandy!!
Thanks for that Carl. When I go back and check out the old build videos I feel like I'm like a spring chicken with no beard and maybe slightly fewer pounds around the waist haha
Sandy, that's a fine little cabin. I think it's really cool that the majority of it is constructed from re-purposed site trees. Reminds me of some of the pioneer cabins I have seen in the States. I am impressed at the amount of components you have salvaged from other builds. I bet the view is absolutely beautiful in winter. Well done Sandy. You should rightfully be proud of your accomplishment. 👍
@@sawingwithsandy through bolt the ladder to the rail so you can swing it up and hook it to those rafters instead of rolling it, could put two notches in the floor for the feet or some nice rubber no slip caps
Just a simple and yet extraordinary piece of work. The fact that you did this totally from tree to finished cabin is a tribute to your skills. Love the bug bite wood! The only thing better would have been if it had had worm trails in it. Rustic and fabulous! Great job!
Great work Sir!! My personal suggestions as a home designer. Add lots of Solar panels to the roof. Build a very small closet for cloths, towels, etc. Build a hidden safe in one of the corners of the flooring. Add solar security lights outside on all corners of the cabin inuding the 2nd floor including solar motion delectors for safety reasons so you can see out if any animals are approaching during the night. Add a large first ad box for emerg. Add another chair on your porch for a guest. Add some means of cooking inside with propane for little meals. Add safety door eith fire extinguishers in front and back. A bear can break through that glass patio door! Carry emerg GPS alarm handheld on you and one in the cabin mounted.

Very nice Sandy!! I like your idea of hinging the ladder, at least if you have more than yourself there. A boat trailer winch would quickly and easily lift it out of your way, giving you a lot more usable space, and also a better out side view, while being able to be lowered if you are going to use the loft! I have a feeling that if you hinged the ladder, it would spend most of its time up and out of your way!

You should be proud of your cabin. It is a beautiful well engineered cabin. I especially like the thick outside stair treads and two sides with walkway. Just by looking at it, you must have been sawing and milling for months! Truly a job well done.
Thank you for sharing this with us Sandy, it is a cracking small cabin, I would love to spend time in there it is so well planed you have every thing you could want for a short stay, you have quite the artist in you and it comes to the front when you do your buildings.
Love your bug wood. We use to distress wood to look like bug killed and then we would put it in multi million $ rustic homes, people loveed the look, I was once a professional painter and we did that kind of work. Thanks for the tour 👍
That's pretty neat work! I've used hemlock flooring that was similar in which a wire brush was run over it along with a circle saw to make marks on it. Bet you've got some neat tricks up your sleeve.
I watch a lot of cabin building videos and I have built my own cabin with another person. You did such a fantastic job on your cabin, from the use of vapor barrier to building your walls correctly! I watch many other videos and pick up on a lot of mistakes being made because I worked with a man that once built cabins for a living. I was so glad to see someone do it right!! Thank you and very nice build!
The thick stainless steel chimney pipe, which goes from the stove on the ground floor through all the rooms to the roof and heats all the rooms, is simply ingenious, as it not only looks good, but is also highly functional.
Sandy - what a cozy little cabin. I love this build - and hope to build something like this on a piece of land like that one day. Hope you get to enjoy it as much as possible!
Fantastic work! A lot of people aren’t happy unless they’ve either spent 45k or built it out of mud and sticks, very reasonable build with just enough to feel cozy!
Watching your video while I'm drinking my coffee and it is currently snowing outside here in Eastern Ontario, I wish I could do it in front of a cozy fire in a tiny cabin...one day!
Great build! I appreciate the inspiration and ideas. I’m about to build a small cabin with my wife and boys over Christmas break with wood I’ve harvested from tearing down a few barns.
You could always dig in an in-ground basement /first floor out of charred logs as the foundation walls if the ground is fairly porous. Only because the cabin's on a hillside. Nice cabin.
Great little cabin and your pride in it very understandable. Lots of work there. Beautiful location in the woods for wildlife viewing all year round. What a fun place!
What a great build! You should be very proud of the work you did. We have stairs with the same issuing the middle of the room. The slider is a a great idea! Combining with ability to hoist up towards the ceiling would be even better. I've gotta look into this for our cabin. Nice job and thanks for sharing.
To hold foundation in place, pick two spots, 15-20ft away from base, dig holes, remove dirt then back fill with clean dirt. The pines and fir put out acidic soil. Then plant two Sugar Maples, one in each filled hole. Cut any pines within 20 ft. Remove needles, give a sprinkle of lime in winter when there is snow, add nitrates. This will ensure the Maples take. They grow roots three times the size of above ground. They hold rocks and soil in place, reducing any chance of house movement. Plus they are lovely, attract wildlife.
Any tree around a house or building must be considered. If he likes the ‘feel’ of pine and smell, they do sell miniature pine and fir trees that don’t grow beyond 10-12ft.. they would provide thermal cover, noise reduction, and add wind protection.

Like the cabin. I will say, the house wrap is designed to keep water out and still allows your wall to breathe. It’s a great product. Adding the vapor barrier, you just stopped the wall to breathe. You’ve created a greenhouse effect and may have created a moisture issue that hasn’t shown itself yet. If you’re not in a humid climate, you may not have an issue. Thanks for the walk through. Thanks for expounding your foundation build. Our soil is also very stable, as such, I will be building our initial cabin the same way.
Holding up real strong which is great for me. Thanks for watching Mark
Fantastic job Sandy. Love to see a one level version of your build only because it would be more convenient for a senior with mobility issues. But again, your cabin is bad ass for sure.
I agree with ya Rodney. Would make for a nice cabin. Think I may have to look to the future to try out cabin #2. Thanks for coming along for the tour
I enjoyed watching all 52 videos I learned a lot from you I’m was happy you showed even your mistakes and how to fix it you have all rights to be proud of what you did 👍👍
Great to hear you enjoyed the videos. Thanks for coming along for the build Cindy
Great job! For a long stay, where's the outhouse and what do you use for cooking?
I toast a beer to you. mad respect.
Thanks for that. Appreciate it! Cheers
