The state where I live just did away with emissions across the board! With the price of newer trucks these days, I've come to the conclusion that my 16 2500 may be my last diesel! So, I'm leaning towards deleting it. We'll see.
Marion get yourself a banks monster ram intake. Remove the grid heater and let the truck breath. Uninstalled one on my stock 18 and it's awesome! Noticeable improvement
Drove my ‘14 til around 75,000 then started getting the dpf failure. Went into limp mode so I drove to a shop that I had already checked out cause before I even bought the truck I knew they were notorious for failing around that mileage. I’m at 180k miles now and have had no issues whatsoever. I also run a light tune. No peeling out or anything crazy. I pull a 16k 14ft dump trailer almost every drive also.
I just added a Banks Monster Ram that relocates the grid heater. I'd estimate the intake system was 35% clogged with carbon deposits from running exhaust gas back into the engine. The problem with the EPA is that they don't think about the entire life cycle of a truck - they neglect to take into account extra emissions from increased fuel use from the soot cooker and definitely don't think about the decrease in life span of a truck that has an EGR system. I can guarantee you that they haven't done an complete analysis that takes all this into account. And don't get me started on their PM2.5 (small particulate) BS. They base all their decisions on terrible science, they would be the first agency to get the boot if I were in charge.
I travel almost full time with my 6.7 F350 and camper all around the Country. I agree in not deleting. I have enough in life to worry about and finding a shop wherever I’m at that will work on my truck if it’s deleted is not something I want to deal with. Same if I have a catastrophic failure and need to trade it while the road for another truck, I don’t want to worry. So far 119,000 miles and zero emission issues….just the leaking upper oil pan from a bad RTV re-seal. Keep the DEF clean going in, let the truck regen correctly, and run the truck. Yup, felt the same until a was staring down a multi-thousand dollar repair bill. For folks thinking about it, the truck runs better and cleaner deleted.
I am getting 15 k oil intervals as well. My truck runs great, gets good enough mileage and is still in warranty. We also live in Colorado where I will have to do emission testing in a couple of years. Makes sense to follow your logic.

I had a 2015 Ram Laramie Longhorn. Not deleted. Had a MM3 turner by Calibrated Power. It ran and pulled outstanding! Kick myself everyday for selling it. Super nice truck!
I agree with you. I feel it is too risky to delete because the truck could end up unsellable. I am not planning on getting rid of my truck but you never know and deleted makes it almost impossible in many places unless you do some back door deal which then also hurts the value. I have a ‘14 as well with 152k miles, no egr issues. I did install a Banks Monster Ram and replaced the factory grid heater with their version. The truck runs great and I actually noticed a 1-1.5 mpg boost. Although it is expensive I highly recommend the upgrade for the mileage and the fact that it gets rid of the potential grid heater failure point- although mine was fine after 148k miles. Overall the truck has been great except for the trans. Replaced that with a Randy’sStage 1 trans at 143k. Expensive but way cheaper than a new truck🤪
Not sure what to think and my 19 Cummins is too new to have enough info to make that decision. I do not need any trouble for modifying anything from the bs officials
In my area deleted trucks are bought and sold everyday. They are much more sought after because I live in a state that is very large and remote and reliably is everything. Also agriculture is the biggest market in this great state and we have zero emissions testing for that reason. I have the same truck as you it’s a 2014 2500 Laramie and I deleted mine at 65k because the def pump failed. I wish I would have deleted it the day I bought it because I get way better mileage and performance and I don’t have all that soot being routed back to my engine plugging everything up. Also no more stinky def needing to be added. It runs like a Cummins is supposed to.F@ck the EPA they are a bunch of criminals. You won’t see a single government vehicle with emissions equipment on a diesel. That tells you something. Thanks for your video sir. Adios.
I have a '16 2500 and until two years ago I had no problems with the truck. Two years ago I had to replace the nox sensors at about $500. Last year the def injector went out. That cost me $1000. This year the def pump went out and they were going to hit me with a $2600 bill to fix that and I said NO MORE. It's in the shop as I am typing this getting deleted. I'm probably luck that I made it to 100K miles before any of this stuff happened.
When I was shopping for a used truck, I specifically skipped over deleted trucks, I dont want any problems registering it in the future if theres a crackdown. Whatever breaks, Ill fix it. So far, I havent had any problems on my 2014 RAM other than NOx sensors, its at 200k but I can tell my truck was babied and is like new.
The big difference when comparing gas to diesel emissions is reliability! When something goes wrong with your gas emissions you get a check engine light, with my cummins I got a count down on a red-eye road trip with a dead line. From a financial stand point I needed to make sure that didn’t happen again. I’m not against emissions, but I am against the EPA countdown programmed into the newer diesels.
sir one thing you mentioned was the price. Once you are outside of warranty period and have to replace an entire DPF, and eat the cost, you will fully understand what people are talking about when they delete late model trucks. The newer emissions trucks are only getting worse. 10k for a DPF replacement. 8k for the part and 2k labor. Problems are more frequent, and dealer visits are as well. Glad your rig has been sound, but not all of us are that lucky. Some do this for reliability and others for performance.
I agree with you. I've got a 2015 version just like yours. I deleted all of my past diesel trucks, but I wont be deleting this one. At least not unless its absolutely necessary to keep it reliable. The main reason is because I do a lot of heavy towing and I prefer to keep it quiet in the cab. I've got an old hot rod and a Harley for when I want to make some real noise. As long as its reliable and not difficult to maintain, I'll keep mine stock. Thanks for the video!
@MarionBlair I also kept the 4" stock flexible down pipe from the turbo. I drained the DEF and filled with distilled water. I didn't remove anything under the hood. I can reinstall the SCR and DPF and flash back to stock in about 3 hours.

@@bobbyj0708 -- Sorry to hear about your Dad passing. I'm sure he was glad about having a son to pass his Cummins on to. I have a good friend who lives in Germany that loves my '03 and it will be his, free of charge, when I no longer can drive it.
We have a bunch of equipment and trucks with emission equipment on them that run every day. We hardly ever have issues with emission equipment on any of them. A sensor every now and then but the trucks are getting 20,000-40,000 miles per year and the excavation equipment get 1,000-2,000 hrs per year.
@@nathanbaier9929 the skid loaders we are starting to trade in every 3 years, the bigger equipment we will run to at least 10,000 hrs before we trade. Biggest issue we have is the DPF temp sensors on the Takeuchi skid loaders with Kubota engines will shut the machine down because they think it’s too hot and it takes 20 minutes to cool before you can restart the machine. They have put new sensors in and they act up still the same. Sometimes they go weeks without issue and sometimes they act up twice a week. Replaced one sending unit in a DEF tank on a Cat 953K loader. Other then that they all are good.
On the '07-'12, I agree. On the '13 to '18 it's there mainly as a warmup strategy. The EGR usage is mostly non-existent outside of warmup. It's why the 2013-2018 do not need intake cleanings anymore. Also the same reason the 2013-2018 gets fuel economy compared to a 12 valve, even with it being a heavier truck.
I'm about to have to replace dpf filter 6,800!! Bunch of crap! I bought egr/def/ccv delete plus a banks horn to get rid of the heat grid and the tools to do it all for about 3,500.. my truck has 180,000 so i think I'll work on it myself..😂
Guy I worked for bought one of the first Dodges in town with a Cummins engine. A company truck that the help tried hard to destroy. The engine is now connected to a water pump.
I always took it for granted that when my 17 got out of warranty I would delete it. Now it is out, and I have decided not to, for all the reasons as Marion's. Number 1 is what the heck do you when it comes time to sell or trade. Even if you put all the equipment back on the ecm will never be a virgin. This current EPA is a joke, but it's a joke that we all are forced to deal with.
Mad respect to you Marion. I'm waiting to watch the video when something (SCR maybe) in your emissions system craps out and your faced with a choice. Spend thousands to keep it OEM, or equivalent money to go no emissions, better power and fuel economy.
Many have their truck deleted at shops that keep the removed equipment and sell it. The safest way is to delete the truck yourself and keep all the hardware that is removed. This is incredibly easy to do. All that needs to be removed is the SCR and the DPF. I use EZLYNK for programming. You can leave everything on the engine intact but disabled. I can put my truck back to stock and reflash to stock in about 3 hours. EGR is horrible for a diesel engine as well as the heat generated to regen the DPF.. This was my main reasons to delete. If you're out of warranty, have you had to purchase any of the emissions equipment on these trucks?
Have you had your turbo actuator fail yet? I have a 15 with 75000 miles and it failed. I don’t do excessive idle. Ram has an updated warranty on the 2015 model for the actuator. Got my 2500 back. Thanks for your videos.
The new diesel engines of today make fantastic power stock. There's also CARB friendly aftermarket parts from Banks that'll fix weak points like grid heaters. Sure, the DPF, EGR, and DEF systems add extra complexity and when they're "deleted" you take away some failure points, but I don't miss the cloud older trucks would put out when started on a cold day. It doesn't make sense to delete the truck's emission system just for the sake of re-sale as you mentioned.
I hear the statement that dealerships won’t take deleted ‘trucks’ on trade. If you’re thinking about trading in your truck while considering deleting it, you should reassess more than just your vehicle. Dealerships take anything in, especially hd diesel pickups. I’ve personally never had a used car salesman say they won’t buy my deleted diesel pickup. There’s zero reason you shouldn’t delete if you’re planning on driving your vehicle for the next several years and every logical reason to delete now.
They can't resale them. The ONLY reason a dealer takes in a truck that's deleted is because the used car salesman doesn't know what a deleted truck looks oor sounds like majority of the time. Or they don't know the specific years and regulations. Once that truck makes it to the back in the shop, the mechanic says it's deleted, then they HAVE to auction it because they CANNOT legally sell it on their lot.
What about the grid heater delete to keep the nut from burning off, and falling into the combustion chamber? This is something RAM should recall, plus issues with the brake modulator failing, and having to be replaced.
I just took mine to Cutterup Rob (hes on UA-cam) and he tig welded it together for me for $40 cash. Saved lots of money and didnt have to buy expensive parts.
The problem is the fuel... when the fuel gets burned it leaves soot... the soot gets built up in the motor. Look at the 6.7 cummins. Gale banks talks about the grit heater nut that gets corrosion on it then it falls off into the motor. The egr needs to be in place for the EPA but who is going to pay 30k for a new cummins. I will stay with my 2005 dodge ram cummins. More noise and lower cost or ownership no emissions
While it is related to the fuel, it's most related to combustion temperature. EGR usage is only needed on engines with poor NOx aftertreatment. The 2013 and newer got part taken care of, Cummins can meet the emissions without it and is why some Cummins engines don't have it anymore. But they keep it on the trucks likely just for a warmup strategy. Oddly enough, the fuel is why the newer diesels are having less emission and engine related issues than the newer gas engines trying to meet the emissions. The diesels can run at a much higher combustion temperature with the 2023 and 2024 Cummins measuring particulate matter in micrograms(this being confirmed by the California Air and Research Board). The gas engines with the common rail system can't hit a decent fraction of the pressures of the diesel and lack the atomization.
Way to twist the information, the grid heater failure has nothing to do with emissions, it’s a heater bolt, it has current that goes through it and it gets red hot constantly.
i think if you kept the parts and told dealer here , its deleted an tuned , but hears the stocks parts youd be ok with trade in depends who you go thru as well. i have the 5 year extended warranty bumper to bumper drive train etc oil changes as well. i know if the 8 speed comes to the conclusion of ram , ill trade her an get no extended just to delete. as of right banks power bundle is the far i can go with tappering with emissions an warranty
Yes, there's some fuses relays you could pull if you are trying to keep someone from stealing the truck but fuse 70 will pump water or gas out just fine. The ignition should be off and truck not running.
i wouldn't consider deleting my '17 but my wife drives a '12 BMW X5D and the DPF just failed. Getting quoted $7000 to fix so I've been cursing the EPA lately.
Funny this video just popped up….. I’m ripping all that $4it out my 2500/cummins tomorrow actually!! I can’t wait!! Also deleted my motor coach with a Cummins ISX 650, runs WAY better, more power and better mileage and my oil doesn’t look like tar anymore. Next month I’m deleting my Kubota tractor as well. That garbage doesn’t belong on it. Everything deleted runs better, more power and lasts A LOT longer.
I will say. There was soot upon soot after deleting my 2019 at the 36k miles. Used an S&S kit for a 2010-12 I scored right when the hammer started to come down. Got a throttle valve delete as well. Not as much of a MPG gain as I was expecting. The 5th gen is pretty efficient and I usually hang out around 19-20 mpg average in the summer and 17-18 mpg in the winter. Now I need to get around to doing a heater grid delete now that it's consistently around 35F where I live. Take your time with the nuts for the giant EGR valve. I would coat those in PB/WD40/you preferred choice and let them sit. The throttle response alone has been worth it. Dear lord it was lackluster. The absolute worst i've ever driven was a 2017 with the 3.42's. The best was an 5.9 HO with injectors... and 590k miles on it when I drove it. But that speaks for itself.
@@That0nePerson 🤛🏻. I’m doing the intake manifold after. Esther a video on it, it’s a lot more work than I thought, but worth it. I’m installing a muffler as well so it’s not that much of a heat score with straight pipe. I’m pretty excited
My update. Got a full delete with a 150HP tune. WOW, unbelievable!! The truck drivers might and day better, throttle is crisp and instant, about 90 miles more on a tank if you drive normall. There absolutely no going back. Engine temperature is also down. Now that I know first hand, the stock truck absolutely sucks!!
I've been running a "30hp tow tune" for 52k miles now. Still stock 68RFE for now. Plan on upgrading this year, but when I actually want to. Once that and head studs enter the equation i'll set it to kill.@@LamborghiniV12M
Most trucks here at 80 k require complete dpf change. 4g cdn. I deleted mine at 31k. No improvement on fuel, no more turbo lag due to the tune. Lost the turbo actuator right after deleted, 3g cdn, coincidence?
@@MarionBlair agree , complete garbage, I never seen any improvement in fuel mileage but turbo lag big difference now. I never had any issues with Def here but lots do as it gets -45 Celsius. Overall, this truck is most maintenance intensive, expensive, unreliable ram junk I have ever owned
I have a 2018 RAM 2500 that has been exhaust-modified. The reason for my modification is how my truck is used: 20% boat towing and 80% non-towing. I knew I would have issues with the after-treatment system with my driving style and was prepared for a long-term relationship with my truck understanding it could not be traded back to a dealer after making these changes. If you are working these trucks on the highway to keep them hot, you may never have an issue with the DPF and/or EGR. When I need to tow, I need the truck since my Jeep Wrangler can't handle the job.
Not much info on it other than it applies to 2013 -- 2018. I saw where someone had the recall done on a 2013 and he was complaining that it ran worse when cold. I haven't received anything in the mail yet but will advise if I do.
@@MarionBlair the software made it so that the emissions would pass a test but would pollute under normal operating. There will be a recall to "fix" the software. Are you gonna have it done considering your from Louisiana and not Commiefornia?
Simple, If you delete your truck, keep the parts. If you absolutely need them a few years from now. It’s cheaper to put yours back on than pay for new EGR and DPF filters
2014 2500 deleted before 67,500 so far so good. I used an ezlynx tuner with a factory tune on it. I only have about 105,000 on mine right now. Fuel mileage went up about 6-8 mpg.
I'm surprised by your oil change interval. I barely make it to 5000 miles before I say this is too much and drain the thick black 100% synthetic molasses.
most i run is 5k to 6 k and never go more than that and running full syn. I also if going to pull for thousands of miles i do an oil change and service
But Marion the entire reason why deletes happen is that the entire emissions system is the top issue called out by 90% of owners out there. Same thing related to the grid heater which you deleted ;) BTW very much appreciate your videos, very helpful.
My buddy owns a reputable diesel shop. EPA showed up the other day and actually inspected the customers’ trucks that were in his bays. Some were deleted. The EPA rep asked my shop owner friend to print the history of invoices on those deleted trucks to prove he wasn’t the one who “installed defeat devices “ on them. He complied and proved innocence. The EPA guy grabbed tag numbers and told my friend he’d reach out directly to the owners. My buddy laughed and told him “good luck with that, you might want to hit the airlines and cargo ship companies instead”.
@@MarionBlair And that’s the problem with our alphabet government agencies that are run by bureaucrats. They can accuse you of anything and they don’t have to prove it.
90% of people under the age of 40 who just watched this video, it went in one ear and out the other. Black smoke means good, no smoke = efficiency which means bad
@@MarionBlair For sure. The unfortunate side of the crackdowns is the reputable tuners aren’t going to touch deletes because they’ve already gotten into trouble. So we have either stolen/hacked tunes out there, or guys that really don’t know fully how to tune, just to get emissions off a truck. And that’s unfortunate. Some of the tuners saw early crackdowns and nixed so called smoke tunes or lope tunes and focused on good clean tunes. But that option has largely been taken away. Any ‘07.5-‘12 truck I would strongly consider deleting, a ‘13 and later I would feel better about leaving stock.
Waiting to see what the "fix" actually is. My guess is the fix is in on diesel owners. After and if I do the recall (I'm not in any of the commie states) I might consider doing a delete. Especially if the fix is detrimental to the longevity of the engine.
Ya at your stage of the game why would you even mess with it. Where I live it’s not a problem getting anything that’s been deleted worked on. the dealerships around here don’t have a problem taking one in on trade they sell fast. i’ve yet to hear of any person getting hammered by the EPA for having deleted truck. Yes, the businesses are getting hammered for doing it. You can’t point to California for anything that they’re doing cause they’re so screwed up it isn’t even funny. If lived in one of these oppressed states I wouldn’t even own one. I would just lease me a little piece of shit car and get me a new one every three years.
These newer diesels are only capable af 100-150k miles on regular oil changes on or especially off stock emissions. Facts! You won’t get mileage like back pre emissions And the trucks deleted seem to be having trouble electronically once deleted. Diesel podcast😂 Show is based on whatever info they want to get views , nobody’s getting jail time for this and they are actors, poor actors at that
Ok Bert! Then run em but I know from experience and from design alone your newer diesels being doser injectors or particulate filters to VGT turbos to EGR coolers and the multiple flaws in system after years of adjusting your driving to the truck as so you regen properly is all yours at a mere $1300.00 a month or if blessed you pay cash for your reliable truck then $80k and wish you a happy journey and a merry Xmas

@@rpsmith If I hadn't gotten my dad's 2012 when he died I would likely have gotten an older Ram w/o all the emissions crap and refurbished it.
@@bobbyj0708 -- Sorry to hear about your Dad passing. I'm sure he was glad about having a son to pass his Cummins on to. I have a good friend who lives in Germany that loves my '03 and it will be his, free of charge, when I no longer can drive it.
Good advise Marion! Your old buddy from Project Engineering Ventura
Thanks, I lived there for 8 years!
How long are you running them? Years wise?
I have a 2018 and I’m not touching mine it runs fine .
I'd love to delete mine, but not worth dealing with the law.
I can definitely see the argument to leave it in tact but no way no how I leave the EGR on to recirculate exhaust gas back through the intake.
I bought egr/def/ccv delete plus a banks horn to get rid of the heat grid and the tools to do it all for about 3,500.. my truck has 180,000 so i think I'll work on it myself..😂
i've thought about buying the exhausts from the folks that delete their trucks so i'm ready when my dpf goes
5 years ago, I would have deleted, now, the EPA is causing too much trouble. I'll keep it stock.
Sir, watched some older video of yours . About banks dash gauge. Having a few years now would you recommend it ?
Yes, works fine
I have a 2016 with similar miles and my actuator failed a couple months ago
No turbo issues yet.
Mine failed at 35000 kms. Garbage
They absolutely do, 100% take deleted trucks on trade, and turn around and sell them for profit. Every day
It depends on where you live but most are pressured by EPA not to.
@@TheWoodButcher86Incorrect. They CAN and DO sell them. Every single day, dealers all over the country sell deleted trucks.
I live in Colorado and we have to get smogged in order to renew annual registration. Deleting is not an option here.
Same in the metro Phoenix area. Not sure about Tucson area, but the rest of AZ doesn't have vehicle inspections.
Brand new off the lot for my 21’.
You’re right, he does need to atleast do that.
Yes, I agree
It's all personal preference. But I love my deleted truck... Egr, def, and dpf delete with ef live. Love the sound and the response of the throttle
Agree, I'm jealous!
Marion is there fuse I could pull other then number70 to prevent the truck from starting?
Yes, there's some fuses relays you could pull if you are trying to keep someone from stealing the truck but fuse 70 will pump water or gas out just fine. The ignition should be off and truck not running.
i wouldn't consider deleting my '17 but my wife drives a '12 BMW X5D and the DPF just failed. Getting quoted $7000 to fix so I've been cursing the EPA lately.
lol, go to church and pray the EPA ....... good one!
2017 Fully deleted, I’ll never go back.
Did you attend church Mr. Blair? 😂
Most trucks here at 80 k require complete dpf change. 4g cdn.
I deleted mine at 31k. No improvement on fuel, no more turbo lag due to the tune.
Lost the turbo actuator right after deleted, 3g cdn, coincidence?
I doubt it, those actuators are defective.
I see the King shock decal. Is that what you have on the truck?
Yes
I have a 2018 RAM 2500 that has been exhaust-modified. The reason for my modification is how my truck is used: 20% boat towing and 80% non-towing. I knew I would have issues with the after-treatment system with my driving style and was prepared for a long-term relationship with my truck understanding it could not be traded back to a dealer after making these changes. If you are working these trucks on the highway to keep them hot, you may never have an issue with the DPF and/or EGR. When I need to tow, I need the truck since my Jeep Wrangler can't handle the job.
Can you comment on the FCA 67A recall? Good thing you didn't delete...
Fuel mileage went up about 6-8 mpg.
the fuel mileage increase would be nice given the prices these days.
@@nugnug9447 well considering just the parts cost me over $2k and I did the labor myself hard to justify just in small amount of added fuel mileage.
Is there a way to buy you a "cup of coffee" to thank you for all your help?

I'm surprised by your oil change interval. I barely make it to 5000 miles before I say this is too much and drain the thick black 100% synthetic molasses.
yup same. 2017 L5P I change every 5k mobil 1 15w40 full syn, at 5k its baked black
Cummins says 25k. I change at 4K or so.

That being said I run shorter oil change intervals and just use conventional.
most i run is 5k to 6 k and never go more than that and running full syn.
Yes, total agree.
Or the US military
That's true but the EPA can drag you into court and cause you to spend a lot of money on legal fees even if proven innocent.
Deleting has nearly nothing to do with black smoke.
Agree unless they tune it for rolling coal. I believe a deleted truck could past the exhaust emissions test or close.
In CA it’s illegal and if you blow any smoke on a smog check you fail. Yes it sucks. But not worth the hassle.
I'm trying to get mine on a diet in Florida if anyone knows anybody.
I agree 100%
Very true. Agree.

Restore a truck and no need to delete anything
These newer diesels are only capable af 100-150k miles on regular oil changes on or especially off stock emissions. Facts! You won’t get mileage like back pre emissions

What? Newer diesels work like no old diesels ever did and last way longer once deleted
