15:02 The Ford Pinto was actually much worse because this was one of those times when the company weighed the cost to recall and repair the defect vs the price of human lives lost. They decided that the price of human lives was not worth the cost to repair so they chose to ignore the safety concern.
Must be a pretty common thing with Ford because I have a Ford Focus SEL and there was a recall on it (last year I think?) because apparently some drivers experienced the doors popping open while they were driving! Scary stuff
Tylenol's reaction to the tampering situation is specifically what saved it, in the end. Wasting no time with recalls, swiftly designing tamper-evident packaging, etc. The tampering, in and of itself, wasn't their fault, but they acted swiftly to deter tampering and make it very evident if something had been tampered with in its packaging, after that scandal. The copycat ones that killed others didn't help (such as the excedrin tampering).
The most expensive recall in history was $112 billion when Tesla had to do a Over The Air update to more than 2 million cars. It was done before the legally required recall notices were mailed out. Stock fell by $22/share.
I did own the easy bake oven. Exactly the one in the first picture you showed when you presented the product on the list. I remember the cake getting stuck in the oven. If I remember correctly, I think it was a Christmas gift from my parents when I was around 4-5 years old. I can’t imagine what a hand getting stuck in the oven would do. That must have hurt a lot!!!
I had the old school one where you pushed this tiny pan through a little slot with a stick. There was no way a hand could have gotten caught in there. Mmmm cakes baked by a 25watt bulb. Yum!
I loved my Easy Bake Oven! I got mine in 1974 for Christmas when I was 5. I used it for years and never had a problem. I got one for my son when he was 5 and he used it with no problems for years. Don't blame the oven, blame the parents who aren't supervising their use! I had a friend who worked for Sony during the battery fiasco. Customer service was originally instructed to inform people that they must have a counterfeit battery because there was no way their own batteries were causing the problem. They finally had to take the blame when other agencies got in on it because of the number of cases.
The Easy Bake Oven as a toy was not the reason for the recall and they still make them today and there’s a list load of other “Snack Maker” toys on the shelves today. The issue came with that specific model of the toy from that year as they update the models every few years to expand the range of things kids are able to make. The problem with that particular model of the oven was that cakes would get stuck inside and the tool that was supposed to push them out of the oven would often times not work at all and small children would then be tempted to put their hands inside the oven to retrieve it, only to get their hands stuck inside. That easy bake oven model was recalled and a new model of the ovens replaced it. So it’s not really the toy that was the issue itself, it was just a really dangerous design flaw that caused it to be recalled and redesigned.
Lets not forget that in the last few years, iPhones have been known to catch fire just by charging them. And now, we have all these EV cars around, and once those catch on fire, it takes a special chemicals to put out those fires and half the time, firefighters just let them burn.
A couple of big ones missed, the IKEA Malm dresser tipping over and the recall and temporary closure of the Blue Bell Creamery in Texas (aka the best ice cream in the country, aka the cows think it’s heaven) in 2015 due to a listeria outbreak. They recalled 8 million gallons of ice cream, shut down production for over two months, killed 3 and ordered to pay 17.25 mm in criminal penalties. People are serious about their ice cream, even when the recall was announced, people ran to the store to buy their favorite flavor to stock up - screw the risks!
We had a Kia SUV for a time... it tried to kill my husband twice. The steering column would lock up and not let him turn while merging into traffic. The last time happened after he had just picked it up form getting the oil changed. The dealership pushed him not to report it... I'm pretty sure it got recalled sometime after that.
Vioxx & Bextra coulda been listed together. They are the same class of drug. (Cox-2 selective NSAIDs). They got pulled for the same reason. FYI Celebrex is the same type of drug and it's still on the market...
For me, I remember the scariness of the Tylenol vandalism. Seeing empty shelves every store you went into made you really aware of how many people could be affected.
The brewing system one scares me because my aunt uses a larger sized Keurig. I'm also a bit nervous about the Sara Lee recall because I only buy that brand of bread. And since apparently Toyota doesn't seem to learn, the gas pedal recall makes me wish Camery models within a certain year range to be recalled for faulty safety features causing unsafe driving actions. I wish I was joking when I say that the last time I was ever in a Camery that had automatic transmission and said safety features, the piece of crap tried to make me and the person I was riding with at the time hit the side of a flatbed truck when it swerved by itself. Those things are haunted death traps!
Ford knew about the problem with the Ford Pinto, but didn't want to spend the money to fix it. Lee Iacocca, the man who green-lighted the Pinto, said people didn't care about safety. It would have cost less to fix it then a recall. The American Auto manufactures (GM, Ford & formerly Chrysler) put profits over quality and safety
I had a Vibe with the Takata airbags equipped. Last thing I did in that car was hit a deer, and somehow, not only did the airbags NOT go off, it was driveable right up to when I took it to the body shop where it was deemed totaled. Despite not having it for at least six years, I still get recall notices in the mail.
If you bought it from a dealer, call them and say the car was totaled, they have to communicate them to the auto maker At least, that's what I did when I worked for an Opel dealer.
I remember the peanut butter recall. It was a nightmare. I also learned something at that time. That being, the makers of Peter Pan also make Walmart's Great Value brand Peanut Butter.

My former Mazda 2 had the Takata airbag recall in 2018. I was so glad when I received the letter because I knew my vehicle could be involved in the recall.

In the end, The Ultimate Price is not the Money that was lost by the Company, but rather the Cost of the Lives affected. Also, it is not surprising that Ford Explorers can Roll Over. They are SUV’s (Light Trucks) After all.
I personally believe that if the company, regardless of what they sell, should reasonably believe that there's a major risk, with testing, that when it happens to the public, they should be legally required to pay for all the issues caused from that problem. Like if an injury happens, because of what should be reasonably tested and shown to need updated, then they should be required to pay for the full price of the medical bills and any other problems caused from that injury.
In Germany we have our blinds outside...and today they are being powered with motors...so no soings abd bo threat of the blinds falling on a toddler's head. Good parents invest money into external blinds.
I think the first reply here was meant to be a comment outside of this thread. The blinds were the following entry. I can see the issue with the carrier; it shouldn't have that elastic around it, which made the design even worse than if it didn't have it. Also, if the carrier is going to be in a sling style, it should be made in a way it's always held open and doesn't close. That design makes a good bag for inanimate objects and not living babies, though.
15:02 - the Ford Pinto case was way more evil than you depict it here: In the Ford Pinto case, the company famously faced a cost-benefit analysis regarding whether to implement a safety retrofit for the fuel tank design, which had a risk of catching fire in rear-end collisions. Ford estimated that it would cost $11 per vehicle to fix the problem, amounting to a total of about $137 million to retrofit all affected cars. On the other side of the analysis, Ford estimated the cost of settlements for potential injuries and deaths. They projected that it would cost approximately $49.5 million for deaths, injuries, and car damages resulting from the faulty design. Ultimately, Ford decided against the retrofit, as their analysis suggested that the cost of settlements ($49.5 million) was less than the cost of the retrofit ($137 million). However, this decision led to a significant public backlash and legal consequences. In terms of actual monetary damages paid, Ford faced multiple lawsuits and settlements: - In one notable case, a jury awarded a $125 million judgment against Ford in 1978, which was later reduced to $3.5 million. - Another significant case in 1979 led to a jury awarding $6.6 million to the family of a person who died in a Pinto crash. The total amount Ford paid due to the Pinto case is not precisely documented as a single figure, as it includes various settlements, fines, and legal fees over the years. However, the costs were substantial, both financially and reputationally.
I had a Ford focus 2015, with that infamous Powershift transmission, it got recalled 3 times before I got rid of it. The first time they just did a software update. The other two they install a new transmission
im sorry but if a company knows about a defect that is lethal and willingly keeps making the product should be immediately sent to prison for life and the company dissolved! a simple fine is disgusting and shows they can just do it again
I once had toys that were recalled due lead paint. Well, i still have them but haven't laid a finger on them since, they were Avatar The Last Airbender toys recalled here in Mexico.
Phillips has also had 2 other major issues since then. Their in hospital bipaps shut off with no warning while patients were wearing them. And now some of their home cpap masks are also recalled due to the magnets in them potentially affecting pacemakers.
That GM situation is uncannily like the situation with the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 cargo door in the early 1970's. Not only were there two incidents, one of which was fatal, where the cargo door on a DC-10 had blown out due to not being properly locked, but while the aircraft was still under development, the door design failed during a pressure test, two years before the first incident. The fundamental design of the door remained unchanged, leading ultimately to one of the biggest settlements in Aviation history. The company paid out $80,000,000 (roughly $510,000,000 in 2024 values) in damages. Not only did this have an affect on McDonnell Douglas from a profit perspective, not as many commercial DC-10's were sold as they'd first hoped, but also played a part in the company ultimately being bought by Boeing in 1996

Should correct the toyota faulty petal. The issue was really due to customers who put an additional floor matt in their vehicles and it would slide over the petal. Bit tomatoes still had to shell out the cash.
Those people who don't remove the stock mat before putting in a 3rd party mat in the drivers side foot well. It's amazing that we share the road with this particular group of drivers and live (these are probably also the same drivers that refuse repairs on either regular wear and tear damage or "other shop" repairs that aren't really repairs at all).
Seeing the easy bake oven entry on here brought on a wave of nostalgia. I used to have an easy bake oven and LOVED it. Back then I would've never given a 2nd thought to the dangers of it! Thankfully I never got any fingers stuck in it. 😅

28:58 - according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and other health agencies, air pollution caused by the emissions from cars leads to 7 million premature deaths each year. This isn't counting in those people who suffer from illnesses like cancer and pneumonia caused by the chemicals emitted by cars. Abd we don't even tackle the environmental impact, the impact on facades and other human builds as well as on rhe asphajts on the streets which gets damaged severely by these chemicals. Quite frankly I believe that the majoruty if humans don't even realize that these chemicals gets emitted unfiltered everywhere...and since children and pet animals that people take out fir a walk are smaller... they are affected even more. The most evil thing about that is that that until now the medical community sokd ut as something genetically inherited when somebody got sick from these emitted chemicals. Have a nice walk next to all these outdated internal comvustion engine cars. Tip: lift your children and pets up while doing so. Not the ultimate solution - but decreases the probabiluty of them getting sick a little bit. 😏
I feel like Sanlu (until they tried to cover it up) didn't know the network of farmers they use (which they own) to cut costs came to the conclusion of using melamine to falsely boost protien numbers. Those farmers (which used to be a Co-Op before Sanlu became too big [they used to be a farm in that coop] and bought the others causing it to not be that anymore) became sketchy to save money. The tests that were used to test for contaminants weren't stringent enough (the tests used by the testing agency used by Sanlu) to catch the melamine contamination. There's videos that cover this in better detail than a countdown. Yep, the Note 7 was really a catastrophe since there was a "crossed wires" situation with the batteries twice (I'm guessing the second battery maker also made the batteries too big for the phone), when the battery stock was supposed to be slightly smaller than the battery compartment of the phone rather than attempting to squeeze the maximum battery dimensions out of the compartment. I feel like the arrangement for the new battery maker was to make the battery smaller than the compartment, but someone likely sabotaged the correction (whether purposely or accidentally) and sent the wrong battery design document.
Phillips. CPAP machines. Would I rather risk inhaling particles from foam that could disintegrate or stop breathing 40x every hour. Add them to the next one!!!
@@pooky-bellegaming4089 My only escape was my health insurance pays for a new one every 5 yrs so that just about coincided with the recall. Anyone who uses an Easy-Bake Oven that hasn’t been recalled should thoroughly read the instructions and warning labels. Better yet, an adult could show them how to properly work one and be present when their child uses it.
Honestly, the easy bake is such a cute idea but it is just ridiculously unpractical. The desserts are tiny and don't taste good and they take just as long to bake. Might as well just let your kid bake something in an actual oven with that same adult supervision.

It's really such an unfortunate thing as it solved a problem so many pregnant mothers had of debilitating nausea, but had terrible effects on the babies. But again, at the time, it was the most effective treatment for 'morning sickness' and they just didn't know until they knew. Pretty cautionary for any medication, TBH. I'm only saying it because I was on Vioxx (which is on this list). I had already stopped using it for other reasons before the recall on that one and (as far as I know) have not suffered any effects from it.

- In one notable case, a jury awarded a $125 million judgment against Ford in 1978, which was later reduced to $3.5 million.
Yeah. The consequences of cutting corners.
I had my four wheeler recalled, for transmission problems. No wonder i flipped it.
Hats off to vw. That emissions trick was genius.
surprised the Philips res-ironies foam gate didnt make the list...
Phillips has also had 2 other major issues since then. Their in hospital bipaps shut off with no warning while patients were wearing them. And now some of their home cpap masks are also recalled due to the magnets in them potentially affecting pacemakers.
"Cost the company everything"
But cost 2 mothers their children
That GM situation is uncannily like the situation with the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 cargo door in the early 1970's. Not only were there two incidents, one of which was fatal, where the cargo door on a DC-10 had blown out due to not being properly locked, but while the aircraft was still under development, the door design failed during a pressure test, two years before the first incident. The fundamental design of the door remained unchanged, leading ultimately to one of the biggest settlements in Aviation history. The company paid out $80,000,000 (roughly $510,000,000 in 2024 values) in damages. Not only did this have an affect on McDonnell Douglas from a profit perspective, not as many commercial DC-10's were sold as they'd first hoped, but also played a part in the company ultimately being bought by Boeing in 1996
And now Boeing isn't doing so well now either 😂
I have a 2012 Ford Focus that has had 19 recalls on it. From Transmissions, to the doors.

My sisters 2005 Chevy cobalt had the defective switch caused her to crash had no power brakes and the steering wheel locked thankfully she walked away after a spectacular crash 😮
5:25 cousin larry!

Oh, the nostalgia of the Tim Adler ads. I prefer his more bombastic ads, lol. Long live Tim Adler, The Texas Hammer!
I had a Galaxy Note 7 and I remember how hot it used to get... I guess I was lucky that nothing ever happened with mine.
All these companies needed was a peanut jig; yes, a peanut jig of their own!
My 2005 Nissan Sentra had two recalls for Takata airbags. One in the early 2010s, and another earlier this year.
8:15 I’m sorry, the Natural Selection Food Company? How fitting.
Agreed 😂

I got salmonella from cadbury chocolate in 2006, it was Easter and I had eaten my chocolate by the time of the recall so was already ill then
Top Secret is a frickin awesome movie.

This is why industries should never be trusted with regulation of themselves! They can't be trusted to have the customers' safety prioritized!
A hotline for a battery going on fire.
My mom literally owns all of the shrek glasses. I believe she has 2 per glasses. (Like all the cups you can collect)
My paternal grandfather uses a CPAP. Luckily, he’s never used one from Philips.
@@pooky-bellegaming4089 My only escape was my health insurance pays for a new one every 5 yrs so that just about coincided with the recall. It took people I know over a year to get a new one so they were left with either not using it and having all the risks of untreated sleep apnea or the potential of inhaling residue from foam in the machine.
My childhood cat was one of the one's that passed due to the 2007 food recall 😢 still miss her, she was only 5. To this day I still can't trust Iams for my pets.
I am so sorry for you 😢😢😢
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was like having a Bomb in your pocket. 💣
Yes and it was also banned from airplanes as well
Tell me again why executives think letting quality go by the wayside is a cost effective measure they'll get away with. Oh wait, ignorance and greed, that's why.
I’m not even doing watching this video and every single company knew about their issue. How evil do you have to be to still ship your product when you know there’s a serious risk
The letter "L" appears three times in the word "salmonella". It's not "sammonella".

the amount of times i chewed on those polly pocket doll clothes how I didn't get sick or worse choke is beyond me

Surprised they didn't have the Xbox 360 recall on here js
why you gotta show the mark linn baker peter pan commercial, haha. Cousin Larry wasn't responsible!

Rebecca is back as the Original Narrator!
suprised xbox isn't on this list
Why would it be on this list? I'm not familiar with what happened with Xbox sorry
I wouldn't touch these products with a 10 foot poll
“10 foot polls are being recalled due to splinters contaminated with lead paint.” 🤣
I was one of the victims of the milk formula scandal. As soon as I got back to America, my parents rushed to the hospital to make sure my kidneys were in good shape!
Never eating any food from a company called natural selections 😂. They telling you how they feel about people jk haha but damn. I was avoiding lettuce for the ecoli but I still eat spinach from time to time.
What about thalidomide?
IIRC Thalidomide is still in use, it's just very clearly stated to NOT be used in pregnancy.
@@Terahnee Yes, it's being used to treat Hansen's
It's really such an unfortunate thing as it solved a problem so many pregnant mothers had of debilitating nausea, but had terrible effects on the babies.
But again, at the time, it was the most effective treatment for 'morning sickness' and they just didn't know until they knew.
Pretty cautionary for any medication, TBH.
I'm only saying it because I was on Vioxx (which is on this list). I had already stopped using it for other reasons before the recall on that one and (as far as I know) have not suffered any effects from it.

This is why these companies need to do more research before they release these products. 🎉
Thanks, bot.

One recall that they could have mentioned was mr coffee machines with timer because of them catching fire
