  • Why do we make golf harder than it needs to be? it's time we go rid and scrapped a few clubs out of your golf bag in my opinion... First lets talk driver? what driver is best? What shaft length is best for driver? Then wedges? Putter? fairway woods and do we need to carry a full bag of irons or is it a total waste of money?
My advice to you is I would SCRAP these 5 CLUBS if you want MUCH better golf! and get these alternatives in the bag!

The only 1 I have in the bag is a 60° and its staying..... only used inside 50 yards and typically when short sided, have space in the bag for it and it's the sensible choice, 6 iron I've hot a more forgiving head on then go hybrids/fairway, LAB DF3 putter 5 wood and mini driver 😎🏌‍♂️😎

I'm pretty much set. I dropped 3w for another driver awhile ago, I've pretty much dropped the 60° since then too.
I currently go d1,d2, 17°hy-wood, 5w lofted up to 20°, 20° hybrid, 5 hybrid, 6-AW, 56°. I would love to set up something to get that top end of the bag a little more figured out, but I'd most likely end up with 13 clubs then, or I'd bring back my 60°.

My driver is a 3W. It is an older head, senior shaft, 42". (I do not miss the driver). I play and hit low profile woods very well. They are also shorter progressing down from the 3W. (5W, 7W, 9W, 11W). Irons are 7-PW, re-shafted Ping Zing 2 with senior shafts, 2 degrees flat, -1.5 of standard shaft length. I have three wedges, 52 wide sole Tour Edge, and a 56 Malby Sand Slider and 60 degree Maltby Lob wedge. The fat soles are easy to get great results from. Yes, I have a mallet putter. I am not tall. Once I figured out I hit the ball better with shorter clubs, I changed, decades ago. I get a lot of guff from people because I do not grip it and rip it 250yds all over the place. I plink it down the fairway. Eliminate the out of bounds, sand traps, and water, the score improves. Also, I play the old man tees. I have NOTHING to prove. Golf is a game to me. I try to have fun.

I, too, am perfectly happy with the 3W off the tee. Less dispersion, more confidence than with Mr. D. I swapped out all my fairway woods and irons with a hybrid set from ELEVEN golf. I’m 64 and play with a 72, 82,83 yr old.
The oldest in the party o am trying to get to play off the forward tees. His club head speed / swing length is way down as age is catching up with him. He still hits it ok but off the yellows is struggling to reach the fairway at times.
      My bag D, 3W 3H, 4-PW, 59/54/58 W. And a blade putter guess Alex would be in tears. 😁
Out of that selection the 4i and 3H are the two clubs that I am
Inconsistent with and actually prefer the 4i to the 3H.

Yep. agree 100% I stopped carrying a 3 wood years ago. My 5 wood is a weapon. Fairway finder. Enough distance. Hmm? My putter arc is much better with a blade. I do have a SS grip on it. Hybrids are good. I actually carry 5-6 iron and 5 hybrid. Shorter driver shaft is a must. Mine is 44.5, I hit center face more and have gained distance. Can control the club more too. Same feeling as 5 wood. Carry gap wedge and 56 now only. It works.

I already cut my driver down to 42" so I can keep it in the middle. And I got rid of my 55 degree sand wedge and am using my Gap 50 degree and I added a 5 hybrid - 25 degree and 6 hybrid 28 degree to my arsenal. I guess you can say that my hybrids are my favorite clubs. I have the ability to hit straight with the 7 iron and on to the wedges and I mainly use my 5 and 6 iron for low shots under trees. Partially why I love this game of golf is that you have all of these weapons to accomplish whatever task you need and its fun experimenting. I'm in my 70's and I agree that you can have more fun by selecting the right clubs and club length for your game. Thanks for putting this up!

Why would I dump the longest fairway club in my bag? Do you know that in mechanical driving tests that a 3w will go father than a 5w even down to a 60 MPH swing. Same is true for a 4 or 5 iron over shorter clubs. Sorry that you can't hit them. Guess you need to practice more. BTW. You should be able to sink more putts with an expensive DF3 putter. My advice, if you can hit them, play them. If you can't, take it out of the bag until you can.

I converted my 3W to my version of a mini driver by changing the loft collar to 13.5 degrees and setting it up as a driver for those rare days when my driver isn’t working for me. But my driver is still 20+ yards longer when it is and that is hard to ignore. I did lose the 5W and put a 7W in the bag as it gaps nicely to my 4H. I also recently changed back from a 6H to a 6i and am loving that change. Much better dispersion and predictability (and stopping power) with no interruption to the rest of the clubs’ gapping in my bag.

Solid advice. 3w is definitely a club i struggle with off the turf. I primarily only use it off the tee when driver is too much club or I need to play more of a draw since the 3w is easier for me to turn over.

Agree on everything but the 60 degree. But that's because I got myself a delicate 58 degree with extremely low bounce, and while super effective from bunkers for my shallow swing, I noticed it being a bit dodgy/diggy in horrid deep rough lies. Therefore I also carry a CBX2 full face 'frying pan'. It positively cuts through any flora the course throws at you except trees. Agreed: For emergencies only. If there's a spare place in the bag, why not.

2- I prefer HyWood to 5w most of the time.
3- Because of the new 9w, both 5i and 4h could well go out.
4- 6i and 5h have a decent competition. 6i slightly leading at the moment.
5- I seem to be able to do everything short with no more than 52 degrees.
6- It's nice to have another alternative if you get into a slump with a club.

When I got fitted for my driver I hit the 12.5 farther than the 10.5 . I have a very slow swing at 65. I use my SW more than my P, I do have a 60° for sand because I am comfortable with it.

Too general in your recommendations. Maybe you should encourage players to TRY doing these things and see how it works, instead of tellling them to bin these 5 clubs. Personally, I like carrying 3 woods, and I do hit my 3-wood farther than my 5-wood. I agree that mid-to-high handicappers don't hit their long irons that well, but every once in a while I do hit a good 5- or 6-iron. And I TOTALLY disagree with you on the 60° Wedge. That is one of my favorite clubs, I have confidence in it and hit it very well. Maybe it comes down to what kind of clubs people are using. For years I used clone clubs and did okay with them. But since 2022 I have been hitting better-engineered clubs that are forgiving. My Cobra woods hit straighter and longer than my old clone woods, and these are the LTDx models. My Cleveland Zip Core Wedges are great clubs that I hit well consistently, unlike the old clone models. And I use 52°, 56°, and 60° lofts. Just one man's opinion.

Was using a 50 and 56 (to simplify my wedge choices) but struggled a lot with my bunker game and reintroduced the 60 purely for bunker shots and very very tight lobs over bunkers/hazards. 60 is useful for me but only if I restrict it to exact scenarios.

I miiiiggghhhht can see shelving the 5 iron? But 6 iron, no way! And secondly, when you shorten a driver shaft you better make sure you have a quality club fitter who can properly add weight to the head to control swing weight. And good luck with that. Improper driver swing weight can cause serious dispersion numbers to suffer.

Just get fit. Not just driver, get fit for every club you buy. There’s no blanket rule for every golfer. Oh and take ego out of it. I did a blind iron fitting a few years ago and got put into Srixon ZX5s even though I really wanted the Mizuno pro 221. I immediately dropped from a 22 handicap down to a 17 that season. I’m positive that wouldn’t have happened if I went with 221s. Because of the improvement, it made me more addicted to the game. I’m down to a 10.2 3 seasons later and I think it’s time for another fitting. I can flirt with the idea of those 221s now but again will leave it in the hands of the fitter.

I threw out a 60 wedge a couple of years ago, and my handicap has in part come down due to that. I take real issue with the putter though, I have tried a mallet head, for me, it has less feel, especially on down hill shots resulting in higher scores. I like a bladed putter because if gives you some flexibility on fast greens and downhill putts, the off centre putt simply doesn’t have the same zip nearly always stopping close to the hole.

The second you said ‘not enough club head speed’ it made me doubt the relevance, I’m a 18 hcp - my driver swing speed is about the 118mph mark and 7 iron around the 95 region. I have an 8* driver and 14* 3 wood - zero issues hitting the driver around the 300 mark and my 3 wood 275. I also after that have 2 iron to PW with 54* and 58* wedges with no intention of ditching any of them.
I also have always felt what people go by for selecting the right clubs is a higher handicap shouldn’t necessarily be having to play game improvement irons - it wasn’t until I ditched them and went for irons closer to the ones played on tour (I had the original T100Ss I liked initially but have recently gone for the Callaway Apex CB which truthfully are only 5-PW (well 10 iron) and have the Apex Utility Irons 18, 20 & 23* (the same loft as the 2, 3 and 4) all with the same 6.5 rifle shafts and I’ve been seeing my game improve, I like the feedback for when you hit it wrong and makes you concentrate more plus the major issues I had with game improvement irons were being a long hitter the dispersion was amplified with clubs as such

I have a 16 degree 3 wood that I will NEVER take out of my bag. I carry that club 270 off the tee and I absolutely need it for dog leg lefts. My driver I hit in a range from 290-315 based on the quality of strike, but I CANNOT turn it over left!
Long irons are for par 3’s and approach shots into par 5’s. That’s it🤷‍♂️If you don’t hit them great, it’s not the end of the world. I can understand playing hybrids, but I personally hit irons better than woods so that advice is based on the golfer and their strengths.
Couldn’t agree more on the wedge advice though. I don’t understand why people have so many in their bags. Get a 56 degree and learn how to play it. If it’s all you have, then there is no excuse for not playing more with it and getting better.
Blade putters are a thing of the past! They are all toe hang weighted which REQUIRES rotation through the stroke. That’s just dumb. Get a face balanced mallet or one of the new crazy L.A.B putters and watch how much more consistent your stroke is. Holing putts starts there and ends with better green reading.
And now for driver shaft length. That bit you got spot on. Shorter equals more accurate and takes some of the flex out of the shaft. But most importantly, it shortens the tempo which is critical because when you hit driver, most people typically swing as hard as they can and forget all about tempo and timing!

I hate that wedges all come with wedge flex shafts. Wouldn't someone with a slower swing speed be better with an ordinary regular flex shaft? Does anyone make wedges with these shafts as standard?

Is there a big difference between chocking down the grip on a normal length driver and getting a slightly shorter shaft?

Why can a person just choke down on the driver shaft instead of having a shaft cut down

Swapped my 3w for a 4w. I had a mallet putter for years and was never really satisfied with it. Swapped earlier this year to a blade that I like a lot more, but agreed on the thicker grip. Got rid of my 3, 4, and 5 irons, I go from a 5w to a 4 and 5 hybrid, to a 6 iron (and on through wedges...PW, 52, 56, and 60). I largely only use my 60deg out of bunkers, to prevent the sand from damaging the grooves on my other wedges.

I'm much more likely to launch a 3, 4 or 5 iron than I am a 5 wood or a 3 hybrid. And my 5 iron is my go-to iron for a play-safe 2nd shot on a par 5. My irons stay. And I have low swing speed of 75 mph for a 7 iron and 80 mph for a 5 wood.
I have retired my 3 wood and switched to a mallet putter with a thick grip, though

No no no, these recommendations are rediculous for so many reasons. 3wd is an integral part of the top end of the bag, if you struggle to hit it, have lessons, because chances are you'll not be able to hit a driver well.
A long iron it a 4i 3i 2i, removing 5i and 6i would be a rediculous idea, they are ideal for long par 3's and approach shots on long par 4's, if you struggle to hit them, have lessons.!
Oh my goodness these suggestions get worse, to get rid of a 60°lob wedge from your bag would be like severally limiting your ability to score, not only on approach shots, but those tricky shots around the greens, out of bunkers, over bunkers, you even raved about such things at the beginning of 2024 when you reviewed the new Cleveland zipcore 2 wedges, so much so that I purchased the full face 60° 8°bounce which fits in nicely next to my 56° 14° bounce, giving not only a variant in full shot distances but versatility in the bunkers that have a variety of sand depths and consistencies.
I've found this video rediculous Alex, get back to your great quality swing instruction videos, if your struggling for content ideas, do a series of on course videos where you play rounds and give tips and strategie ideas.

This was not helpful for me, love my fairway woods, I love my driver too. I think you have to grind it out for yourself. Grind it out means practice.
Your video is about what works for you 😀 cheers and good on you; however, that doesn't apply to me and my style of play and club head speed. Not trying to disagree, and I hope your next round is your best ever, I certainly hope my next round is a good one too.✌️

My list that nobody cares about (in order of priority):
    3 wood
    anything above 56 degree wedge
any iron under a 4 iron
    driving irons
a gap wedge that comes with a set and has an ‘A’ or ‘G’ stamped on it. Just get a real 50 degree wedge

Sorry can not agree. I play off 19 and my go to club s a 5 iron. Also carry a 4 iron. Just cant trust a hybrid so no point in having one. Agree with 5 wood and shorter shaft driver. As for putter what ever works for you.

Bollocks! Most of this info is bad. Learn to hit a 3 wood and longer irons properly and you will hit more greens in regulation. There is a difference in distance between all clubs if struck correctly. Knowing your capabilities with each club allows you to land the ball where you want it.
