  • You can buy this song and the rest of my music here: faryafaraji.bandcamp.com/albu...
An original composition by Farya Faraji, artwork by Joan Francesc Oliveras Palerolls-if you like Iranian history, be sure to check out his artwork; his drawings are the best visual reconstructions of ancient Iranians I've ever seen on the net: www.artstation.com/jfoliveras...
The piece uses the modal scale of Shur, one of the primary Iranian modal scales, or dastgahs; identical to the Western Aeolian Minor mode, except for the second note of the scale which is microtonal. I used Bakhtyari and Khorasani music as the basis for this piece-the dotar's rythmic melody is reminiscent of Khorasani customs with their great emphasis on the dotar and tanbur, and the zurna and 2/4 time signature are a reference to Bakhtyari Toshmal music, whom
some therorise is derived from the military marches of the Sasanian Empire. I also incorporated elements of Iranian Kurdish tanbur playing styles, which often tends to ornament the playing less with appogiaturas, and will play the notes straighter than Persian music or other Iranian styles. The instrumentation consists of an Iranian tanbur, a zurna and a ney, and the percussions are provided by a davul and a daf. All the instruments used in this piece date back to Iranian Antiquity, and were at least known to be present by late-Parthian era in Iran. Still, do note that this is by no means supposed to have any reproductive pretenses--this is modern folk Iranian music, not by any means a reconstruction of Achaemenid-era music, which we know almost nothing about due to lack of sources.
The Immortals were both the elite corps of the Achaemenid army, as well as its Imperial Guard, similar to the functionned fulfilled by the Praetorian Guard in the Roman Empire. The outfit seen here is most likely their ceremonial one used as guards, as it would have been unlikely that the long robes could have been used in battle. The term "immortals" come to us from Herotodus, and we do not know the nomenclature used by the Iranians themselves at the time. The corps was always kept at 10 000 strong, and whenever one man was seriously wounded or killed, he was instantly replaced, therefore keeping a permanent numerical strength to the fighting force.

It's said that the Immortals were the best warriors of their time. They were trained in using all weapons, were remarkably brave and never lied in their life. And at Thermopylae they were just badly deployed. In every other battle against Greeks they were always the ones who didn't break even if facing defeat.
As always, I love your music and this masterpiece is awesome.

According to Herodotus, the Persian and Median troops never broke even when the tide of battle was against them at Platea and Marathon. He even wrote their courage was such that even when outmatched in equipment, they would wrestle and seize the Greek heavy infantry to the ground.

Y’a but the Spartans 300 were better, since they where hand pick from the best warriors, plus Sparta ha a militaristic nation, so for them to be the best of the best they were powerful , the immortals were very strong due to their rich equipment and battle experience, it think the Spartans had an edge

In the case of Thermopylae, the three hundred also had a further seven thousand other Greeks with them. In either case, they outclassed their Persian counterparts through a combination of several factors but were still slaughtered almost to the last.

@@Hluz Not really, in a purely frontal attack while deployed in phalanx, the Spartans would have the advantage, however the Immortals were trained to use the bow, sword, spear, javelin and can ride horses etc. and they too were trained since childhood. In an open field, versatility wins.

That's the eternal inner debate I deal with haha; do I stay fully authentic and miss out on the more "epic" vibe or not? When doing this one I really felt like limiting myself completely to Iranian folk instruments that existed back then (or at least during Antiquity), and the davul and daf can be agressive but nowhere near the Hans Zimmer-y orchestral drums I used in some of my other pieces (obviously those are from VST programs, not physical ones.) For this one I was more interested in expressing the Immortals only with the drums and instruments they themselves would've had, which has its own value for me. Authenticity vs epicness is always a question you grapple with concerning history; Sasanian knights for example, wore pink. I always ask myself, if I were to make a Sasanian movie, would I make them wear pink? If you do, no one will take the movie seriously and you lose their epicness, but if you don't, you lose the authenticity, it's a cool question to ponder about.
I suppose the answer is that more agressive drums would have better communicated the idea of the Persian Immortals, but the drums I used better communicate their literal musical reality, since that was the sonic palette at their disposition, I went more for a "what the Immortals could have heard during marching" concept, but a piece expressing our concept of the Immortals themselves would have been equally interesting for sure!
And do you know what instrument your uncle was playing? This one is an Iranian tanbur, maybe it was the same :)

@@faryafaraji his son played tanbur, his daughters kamanche and he himself played setar and I think another kind of tar. But yeah, I totally see your reasoning on the creative choices with your composition and all the rest of it. I’d very much take the Sassanids seriously in pink :P
But in all seriousness, you’re always very thoughtful about how you go about music, so I typically think the end product reflects the best thing you could have composed for a particular track.

@Toilet Crusader I meant I don't remember if he was playing tar or setar, or another relative of those stringed instruments, but if I recall, it was a tar. Though I'm fairly certain they played both instruments, but I digress.
