I put polyurethane engine / transmission mounts in my car... (*1 MISTAKE TO AVOID*)

  • Today's video is a bit of a cautionary tale about installing or upgrading to stiffer motor and transmission mounts on your street car incorrectly -- I made one critical mistake with the transmission mounts that absolutely RUINED the driving experience of my E36. In this video, I get under the car and try to fix the problem I created. Also, I talk a bit about installing the 80a engine/motor mounts and transmission mounds in Dory the e36, and elaborate BIG mistake I made so that you can avoid it :) If you're thinking about running poly or solid motor and transmission mounts on your car, this video is for you. I talk a bit about the excessive vibration I experienced running these mounts, and how to fix the shaking! To be clear, the noise vibration and harshness were really my fault, so I hope this video is helpful!!

    You should look into hardrace mounts, they're rubber but stiffer than factory

      good call, might do that just for the transmission mounts, as the motor mounts have mellowed out quite a bit

    Urethane mounts will always have vibration and give you an uncomfortable ride, regardless of how you tighten the nuts.
    If you want a smooth vibration free ride, use OEM style mounts.

      it’s true that any stiffer material than OE will transfer more vibrations - that’s just physics - but it certainly doesn’t mean you’ll have an uncomfortable ride - the tightness of the nuts 100% impacts whether or not these mounts are daily drivable. They are still in the car and I haven’t touched them since, and the cabin noise/vibrations are now maybe 10-15% more than OEM. far from uncomfortable, and at idle it’s vibration free.

    Great video. Exactly what I was looking for. Poly 85 motor mounts are not in my future. OEM or solid rubber.

    I put 90a motor mounts in my E46 and it wasn't too bad. Went to Garagistic 80a transmission mounts and everything went to shit 😂. Definitely just sent it when I tightened them though, lol. Gonna have to check that out. Thanks for the video

      the through-bolt design is super shitty, hopefully loosening them up helped with the NVH for you!

    I had the same thing going on around 2k rpms from a shot original motor mount... Had to floor it a little to notice though.
    Also the vibe/resonance was bad when shifting gear at around 3k

    I got Condor VIP mounts (70a) and hated them for this reason. Maybe I'll put them back in and torque them less. I snugged them down to hand tight with a ratchet last time.

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  Рік тому +1

      totally, any through-bolt design is just inherently flawed in that way. Hopefully they work out for you!!

      Thanks @gavinendsley I'm thinking about the condor vip mounts in my e34 but now I'm thinking not such a good idea as I don't want a vibrating daily

      @gavinendsley 5 місяців тому

      @@MichaelTroyMooney I made sure they were snug but not tight now. They still make my interior rattle, until I put a standalone in it (now I have my idle set higher, about 900-1000rpm instead of 700). the higher idle smooths it out almost to stock feel. One thing to note: I have an M44 4 cylinder, so the balance of the 6 cylinder engine is probably better and your 6 cylinder more likely won't rattle as much.

      @gavinendsley thanks man! Yeah I have the 3L V8 so not sure how rumbly it'll be but was thinking if I keep the trans mounts stock maybe that'd help too.

    • @gavinendsley
      @gavinendsley 5 місяців тому

      If anything, the engine mounts make the biggest difference. At one point, I was running poly trans mounts and stock engine mounts because my transmission would move a lot under heavy acceleration, but the interior rattles at idle on poly engine mounts were too much for me. After I put the standalone in, I ended up going back to poly again.@@MichaelTroyMooney

    Nice job Logie 😹😹. What benefit did you expect with the poly mounts? Kudos for sharing your learnings.

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  2 роки тому +2

      hahaha thanks - I installed because 1) i wasn’t sure how old the ones in there were and 2), more importantly, the chassis mount shifter i have going in has a very short throw and a self centering spring, so it’s especially important that the engine/trans aren’t shifting around too much to avoid missing shifts (especially going into 3rd). It does away with the whole shift linkage, so slightly stiffer mounts are, unfortunately, required. Going to see if poly engine + OEM transmission mounts are stiff enough for good shifter function without sacrificing too much comfort :)

    is this effect on stock rubber mount transmission? also on the engine mounting?
    i've change pairs of engine mount and trans mount and the vibration is suck.

    Can I drive these transmission mounts with stock oem engine mounts?

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  Рік тому +4

      ehhh it’s not recommended - the engine will try to twist and the only thing holding it back will the stiffer transmission mounts. Over time that can crack the transmission housing because it’s not super robust where the mounts bolt through. Probably better to run stiff engine mounts with OEM trans mounts!
