I've been watching a lot of these videos and I think they're all really good. It appeals to well written, well edited sensibilities. I think the opinions are well balanced without putting on a clown show to draw attention.

This game was an awesome surprise on the Super Nintendo during it's early years, I remember someone lending it to me when all I had to play was Super Mario World, and Pilotwings and I was totally blown away by how well it was put together, the visuals, the music, simply put the variety in the levels, and the subtle graphic effects that mode 7 allowed. Miss this time when Konami was definitely on their A game.

I'd like to disagree, will make a list as example:
      Early:
      Super Mario World (1990)
      +Actraiser (1990)
      -F-Zero (1990)
      Super Castlevania IV (1991)
The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (1991)
      -Final Fantasy IV (1991)
      Super Mario Kart (1992)
      Contra III (1992)
      -Final Fantasy V (1992)
      Average:
      Super Mario All-Stars (1993)
      Star Fox (1993)
      -Secret of Mana (1993)
      Megaman X (1993)
      Breath of Fire (1993)
      Breath of Fire II (1994)
      The Firemen (1994)
      Final Fantasy VI (1994)
      -EarthBound (1994)
      Super Metroid (1994)
      Donkey Kong Country (1994)
      Megaman X2 (1994)
      Late:
      Donkey Kong Country 2 (1995)
      Megaman X3 (1995)
      Megaman 7 (1995)
      Chrono Trigger (1995)
      Trials of Mana (1995)
      Terranigma (1995)
      Lufia II (1995)
      Yoshi Island (1995)
      -Tales of Phantasia (1995)
      +Tetris Attack (1995)
      +Donkey Kong Country 3 (1996)
      Kirby Super Star (1996)
      Super Mario RPG (1996)
      Marvelous (1996)
      -Star Ocean (1996)
      Megaman & Bass (1998!)
As opposed to 1994 and 1995, there isn't many classic status games at the range of 1990 1991 and 1992.
I added a - sign to games that are considered classics but personally I don't really see why (or do but can't enjoy them), and a + to those others might say "why is this in the list" while in my personal taste I find them classics
Hope someone reads this because I spent like half hour making this lmao, I even got a test tomorrow

Well said. What always bothers me is when people say that the 8-way whip makes the game too easy and broken. I love Castlevania I and III as much as this one, but for different reasons. Sure, Castlevania IV isn't as hard as I and III, but few games are. It still has challenge and this game is more about enjoying a bunch of levels (of which this game has a TON).

I feel the same sentiment. It's especially weird when you consider that the series really had no standard of orthodoxy to begin with. Look how different Simon's Quest was, and after SCIV the series went off in a totally different direction of endless (and diminishing) SOTN clones. What's also funny is listening to friends trash an otherwise incredibly solid game for de-emphasizing the sub weapons, and then go on to defend the "more traditional" trash pile of flaws that is Castlevania X on snes. 😋

It did bring some ideas from previous games. The first level inside the castle is a remake of Castlevania1 first stage. The gear with spikes above it at Clock Tower, before the moving rings, has the same platforming trap that a section of Dracula's Curse clocktower has. You can see it in AVGN's video about the game: he fell for it and made fun of it.

I never had the cart, never rented it, but played an emulated copy a long time ago and only the first couple levels (SNES games, especially platformers, are not the best on a PC keyboard). I started playing this on the SNES mini and loved it. You’re absolutely right, the music is great in this game. The creepy ambient music before you enter the castle is great, but then that first song hits after you enter and you can’t help being pumped up to whip some monsters. Let me address a point of contention here: the controls.
That's the same thing with every Castlevania title prior to Symphony of the Night. However, only in IV could you change your jump-direction in mid-air. This excludes Grant's jump in Castlevania III.
Also, I have no problem with the later levels of the game. They take cues from the NES titles but put their own spin on them too. You're not hanging from grapple points through a clock tower or running from a death saw in the NES titles either.
I've been in my fair share of minor debates with fans of Castlevania III and Rondo of Blood. Yet no matter what anyone says, Super Castlevania IV will always be my favorite game of the originals.

As a Sega turned PlayStation turned Nintendo kid growing up I never experienced the Ninty games of old. I've pre ordered a Snes Mini and now I'm researching what games to play first. Any ideas? Maybe a video about what games you think are best and what games people should play first? Metroid followed by Castlevania? Or maybe the other way around. Let me know. Looking forward to your breakdown.

i kinda agree with ur dont get hit stance cause by this point castlevania 4 the knock back was in 1-3 so its just a staple and we know its there and its up to us to play better.. maybe the kids born in 2001 n later will think its cheap but im 25 n ive come to accept its the way the game was made so adapted our skill n play to the game not vice versa (btw love ur drunk plays of games id love to see some NES drunk plays of castlevania 1,3 and megaman 2 , also more sega games would be AWESOME)

  • @Gameboy-Unboxings

Will it be ok to start playing the Castlevania series with this game? I only have a SNES for a home console. I actually collect boxed Gameboy games and I have Belmont's revenge, harmony of dissonance and aria of sorrow, all complete in box. Haven't played any of them yet, I'm mostly a collector. But I want to get back into playing the games as well.
Edit: or should I get the very first Castlevania that they re released for the gba, the classic NES series?

    • @dukeman8481
      @dukeman8481 3 роки тому

This is the perfect one to start with. It's my favorite of the series because of the more straight forward side scrolling gameplay. The GBA games are metroidvania style and pretty good too. Aria of Sorrow have a good difficulty balance. After 2010s onward, they go more 3D for the big consoles and I have no interest in those games.

Yeah I mean, you've got a point with the knockback physics, but I can't really criticize the game for that, seeing as it's a staple in the Castlevania series. At least, classicvania. I haven't played much of SOTN, so I forget if it has it. But yeah, the first three games had knockback, so it's more of a feature of games than a flaw.
Other than that it's arguably the smoothest playing classicvania ever. You've got some actual air control now, an eight directional whip on top of all the sub weapons you have at your disposal. The levels themselves are fun, albeit a little on the easy side in comparison to the previous games. But then, with as much control as we're afforded in this game, it's natural for levels to be a little easier. It's still challenging however. The later stages, like the blood swamp, are legitimately hard
I like the variety of environments too. You've got the courtyard, barn, and woods from the first few stages, a cave, a dungeon, the swamp, the castle walls, an Atlantis themed level, clocktower, a library, the treasure room. They're not all that spooky, but they have charm. I also love the atmosphere and music of the Dracula fight. I like that Dracula doesn't just transform into huge monster, he just uses a variety of different attacks, such as the skeleton flames, energy balls, lightning. The whole fight felt pretty epic. Othrr bosses were okay, but they didn't last very long. You could take most of them out in a matter of seconds.
tl;dr this is my favorite Castlevania alongside the first one. It did a wonderful job of reimagining the first game, and revolutionized controls in the franchise. Even Bloodlines took a few notes from it, as Belmont can whip in more dirctions than just one in the game.

Just tested it out on the SNES classic in CRT mode, because 4:3 mode is pure shit on a 4k tv. Game seems great! Can't believe I never played this in the 90's on my original SNES. Stared at this and Dracula X in the rental store constantly, and never picked it up :(
I played Dracula X on SNES classic and holy shit, I see what drunk means by involuntarily being knocked backwards into a gaping chasm of death over and over again. That shit sucks! Definitely makes you have to time your whip attack perfectly on floating enemies that run into you. It's not easy by any means and that's what's cool.

While it is fun to play, it is not without its flaws that several titles and platformers have. There are many punishable moments such as missed timing platforms that force players to die, high knockback, and unfair stage hazards such as in level 8. As for being a remake of other levels, that is because this game is a remake of the first game.

my only prob is why is it somhard to get out of way of some enemies? u cant jump over attacks u cant hit them half the time when they bob up n down at n angle which a joystick would b great 4 that n that theres nothing faster pace than just walking slowly. i only played 15 minutes on my snes mini but still that stuff bothers me overall. does it bother you too?

This was and still is the title that made the Super Nintendo a serious system, I recall being blown away by Contra 3 in the systems early days and felt Super Nintendo games could not get better, but Super Castlevania 4 disproved that immediately.

I LOVE this game! Definitely THE best of the classic oldschool Castlevanias! Also, I HIGHLY recommend playing it with the uncensored patch (which is available to download off Romhacking.net). It restores all the crosses in the backgrounds, on gravestones, and on coffins. It also restores the blood that was originally cut from levels 8-1-1 and 8-1-2. In retrospect, it was stupid of Nintendo of America to remove all that stuff. So yeah, play it with the uncensored patch. It's MUCH better!
