As someone already mentioned, Dmade pencil pouches fit into the front pockets like they were made for them. I find they have enough space to be used as a tech pouch or a dopp. However, they don’t provide any organization unless you also order the organizational insert, which is good for keeping things like cords and other smaller items in place. What I like about this setup is that if I need extra space, the Dmade pouch also fits very nicely into the water bottle pockets. So I can move it there and fill the vertical pocket with other things. If I have a pouch in one of the vertical pockets, I’ll generally use the other as a place for a light layer or oftentimes a pair of gym shorts and a t-shirt.
Eric at Skinth Solutions makes pouches that are designed to fit in those front pockets, I believe they're called the pound cake and quarter pound cake(?), he also makes a pouch that attaches to the bottom and helps prevent tip over
The RE31 is a great bag that to your point, is not perfect, but is a nice addition to any collection. You can buy two Dmade pencil pouches that fit perfectly in the front pockets. I purchased two in matching materials, and they work well.
I view the vertical pockets as bonus storage. I have quick access at the top, water bottle pockets, and internal zipper pocket. I throw my phone and wallet into one of the verticals for swing access and the other side can hold any other miscellaneous like AirPods, keys, pencil case, edc kit, etc. It would be nice to have a some vertical segmentation in them though.
Hey man love the content. I use the Bellroy Lite Pouch Duo. The smaller pencil case works pretty well and the larger pouch fits nicely on the inside glad pocket😎
Own both, absolutely agree. Regarding vertical pockets. The whole "opening" has 3 pockets, that can utilise pretty much anything and this is the superpower of Alpha 31. Split keyboard, mouse, glasses, umbrella, jackets, etc. Somehow there is "an okay sized" pocket for it, though it's only 4. The only thing I'm really missing is charlie-like internal organisation, but it's solvable via a packing cube, if needed. Now I'm torn apart between my TAD Axiom S2 Ultra, MW Mars and RE UVX40. Love all, can't decide which one will be my one to rule them all.
Those pockets are a standard feature on most hunting packs and I do agree that unless you have hunting equipment, they are a little awkward even tho they look pretty cool… but in my opinion the best pack they ever made is actually Bravo 18…

Nice! I’ll have to check that out

Thanks for the review! Would you say that the bag is more green or brown? It looks brown in most of your camera shots but then green when outdoors.
Good question! But mostly green
I was surprised that the org
Kits didn't fit with one on each side. Ended up returning.
👍🏻

That’s a tough call for sure…so different
Does the org kit fit into the front tubular pockets?
It doesn’t. It’s just a bit too large for those pockets.
Sadly no
