Seriously, why do you not have more subscribers? Your videos are some of the best quality and editing and are really informative and easy to follow. Unlike some pompous would be spec-op that is all tacticool, you seem like a seriously genuine cool dude!
+Gekke Henkie Thanks man, I appreciate that. I'm not too worried about our subscriber count. We're committed to putting out good info, and if regular people find it helpful, word will get around eventually.
Agreed. I look forward to your videos more than any others. Practical advice and straight-forward. You also don't act like a dick like everyone else, which is refreshing. A+
+Gekke Henkie Haters be hating man...but I've learned so much from this man. And even though my baby (my shotgun) is really sexy. I'd double tap his shorty. :)
This is the first video I've watched that places emphasis on the basic manipulation of a pump shotgun. This advice is golden. Things change under stress and the first thing shooters forget is to work the action. Great videos. Definitely worth a subscribe.
As a person new to shooting these videos have been incredibly helpful. It's obvious that a lot of time, effort, and thought went into these and the motivation isn't to be macho or impress people but to inform the user. I like that it's good practical advice and acknowledges different trains of thought with pros and cons. I bought ammo from you guys because I like supporting companies with good practices. Could you guys do a video on proper form for different types of firearms and drills like that as well? Anyways, Keep up the good quality videos!
Great content from you as always. Regular guy, wearing regular clothes, articulating his thoughts eloquently and succinctly, with useful tips. I'm prior military, and I hate it when UA-camrs feel the need to broadcast a military image with (usually) empty bravado. Just talk to me like I'm a regular dude, and that's what you've always done, which I like.
Best video on pump action shotgun I've seen so far. You make me feel like you're just a regular guy but the truth is you're trained to the teeth. I like what you said about training one's self in different shot counts which will save me from programming myself to only shooting off a certain amount of shots every time. Thank you for sharing.
Excellent, professionally done videos with practical instruction. Easy to watch and good advice. I have not seen better videos of any kind on youtube. Keep up the good work.
I had the distinct honor of taking a number of shotgun classes with Louis Auerbach. He was an absolute surgeon with this platform. Fact is, you do him justice! He was ALL about knowing YOUR shotty and the manual of arms for every situation. I have also had the honor of training with Clint Smith. He is also a shotty fan and teaches people to run one like a BOSS!
I would recommend practice loading without looking at the weapon and stay focus on the target instead. You have to learn to manipulate the weapon in the dark.
this is an awesome channel , finally got signed in your drills are being practiced now regulaly by our group. Most of us are ex- Canadian Military but had little training on shotguns.. amazing and thank you
Excellent job. Glad I found this channel! To tell the truth, I keep the old revolver on the nightstand. I do have a 870 and keep it at the ready but dont practice with it at all. This video inspires me to do just that. Nothing like a 12 gauge to stop unexpected trouble. Take care. Looking forward to your next video.
Found you searching for Glock 43 videos... Your evaluations are really great!!! and video quality is high! Well spoken and understood!!! The practice drill sessions are something I wouldn't have thought of... Diverse the firearms and keep them coming! Thanks for caring!
Just ran into this video and clicked because I was thinking about ways to be ready in a home defense situation. I found your drills really useful! You are, as all the other commentors say, a really great presentor. Thanks. I subscribed.
Dude, you are sharp as hell, and very good at explaining your techniques. I do appreciate your videos and I have learned so much. Thank you for posting.
I practice load two shoot two with dummy rounds . This puts you through all the basics of top and bottom loading as well as manipulating all the controls of the gun.
Best shotgun drills I know of apply to hunting. Big game hunting for heavy recoiling slugs and buckshot. Upland/ waterfoul hunting for light hitting birdshot. Gets you into a mindset of keeping the gun running.
Gekke Henkie is right. Your videos are awesome man. As a former armored truck gaurd I know all about self defense with firearms. Your content is not only relevant, but also extremely accurate in it's practical application. Keep up the good work
The only thing I'd add to any of those drills is topping off the mag tube or at least loading whatever is left on the side saddle. I try to keep in my training to constantly feed the weapon, in case I have more engagements. Awesome drills those, thank you.
Great video, and great video series from your company. I really appreciate free, well thought out instruction for the general public. Gives one a great deal to think about. Thanks again.
Good informative videos. Common sense rather than "tacticool". I just liked and subscribed. My perspective is from a law enforcement background, now retired, and returned to a civilian home/self defense frame of reference.
Glad I came across this channel. Badass HD set up, though I don’t know how I like the shorter shotgun. I mean I get it for HD, but with an already limited capacity I don’t think I’d want even less. I may have to look into these more.
I'm in ! you count on me L/G, you're very articulate and you were messages, and your communication skills are excellent. I look forward to your videos... and I forgive you for not using your Beretta 1301, in this video demonstration lol... keep up the good work....
Great video, great tips. Just one point I want to make is to be sure and convey the importance of manipulating the safety. Since most everyone keeps their shotgun on safe, you'll want to begin each round with the safety on so it becomes second nature turning it off...and back on again. Thanks again for your great videos
+M Wilcof There is some disagreement on the use of the shotgun safety in the training community. I understand both sides and am not adamantly in favor of one or the other, but I lean more toward not using the safety, particularly with the Remington and other shotguns with the safety button in or near the trigger guard. I don't want the trigger finger to have any job other than pressing the trigger or being on the receiver well clear of the trigger. Constantly manipulating a button right next to the trigger creates more safety problems than it solves in my opinion. When not in use, I think the shotgun should be unchambered and off safe. I know not everyone agrees, but I'm not convinced yet, and really, I think the best safety practices are to some degree dependant on how the shotgun being used is set up.
Great videos. I'm gonna make one of these 14" shotguns too. Very rare for an instructor to provide information and techniques without showboating his wardrobe and credibility quals.
I’ve enjoyed fast paced dove hunting my whole life. All bullshit aside, function of the gun and quickly reloading is totally second nature because of this. Learning to shoot for barricades, clearing rooms, etc. is a whole different ball game.
Thank you for this video Chris. I am a new shooter and just purchased my first shotgun. I am having a problem getting a side saddle to work for me. I've purchased two different side saddles and I cannot get the shells to fit in either one of them. I purchased the correct gauge side saddle, but the shells absolutely will not fit in either one. They are both plastic/nylon saddles. Do you have any suggestions for a good side saddle that the shells can easily be manipulated?
Great video thank you I have a question I have a TriStar Cobra 3 it has a spring in the four arm. It's pretty cool to just rack it back and let it go but the one problem is it doesn't stay open to load a shell from the side chamber. In your personal opinion should I take that spring out and make it more like an normal shotgun
Just a comment. In drill one you ended by emphasizing chambering another round. In drill two “The Follow Through “ you shot two rounds and did not chamber another. Be consistent.
I found your videos at a time when most UA-cam personalities seemed to focus on "carbine goes brrrr". Your videos suggested some pro shotgun arguments I had not considered, or even seen. Thank you for that.
Lucky Gunner. Good technique. Tell your viewers one of the secrets to quick port loading is to practice keeping the weapon on your shoulder. You will find that you will acquire the target that much faster. Takes some practice and muscle training holding my Mossberg 590 out that far with one arm but with time, I've learned where to index the shell as I bring it up to the port. Great quality video and techniques. I am jealous of the short barrel though.
I like drills with my 870. I actually carry it several times a year for pheasant hunting. Birds getting up is a better training aid than anything I do on the range. I also do the bulk of my range training in the dark since that’s when 95% of home defense engagements take place. If you can do it in the dark, and in the rain (sorry my time in the infantry made me say that. LOL) you can do it any time.
I would love to get better at a shotgun. I love shooting my 870 marine magnum, and I think that's the perfect shotgun for me. Simple, reliable, good magazine capacity, great recoil pad, and just plain awesome
for home defense shotguns what would be the point for changing the stock. ive seen alot of my friends go for this tactical wierd looking stocks where im the guy who likes the simple wood version. ive seen the magpul version alot does it help with recoil that much? i though buying a shotgun was hard but figuring how to build it after bad on a budget.
Excellent shotgun videos! Quick question on drill #4. If you’re practicing running dry and you get the “surprise empty click” why would you train yourself to load two rounds before reacquiring the target? Just my opinion but I think it would be wiser to load the chamber, reassess and then continue loading further. For whatever reason, I always seem to agree with your videos 99%.
It's a skill-building drill, not a tactical drill. It gives you a chance to practice reps for loading the chamber and the mag tube. Obviously, that's not necessarily going to be the best practice in all scenarios.
i make my own dummy shells with spent shells. clean up the top with a razor knife "olfa" then fill about half with silicone. let that dry a few days then add a marble and fill the rest with silicone, it is kinda the same weight and a bit top heavy as to feel like real ammo. pratice pratice pratice ! i even watch animals shows through the scope of my rifle with a snap cap just to practice breathing and trigger pull. sounds weird but works. thanks for the video made some really good points.
using the marble *and* the silicone is genius!! i wish i'd read your reply an hour ago, tho' - i just bought some 20g snap caps from b-unique over on ebay.
I love my shotgun for home defense. My preferred round is in #3 Buck-Shot and I keep my tube loaded and ready to use. I never keep one in the chamber because shotguns are normally NOT drop safe. I know of none that is drop safe.
Hey bud. Your an awesome instructor. Hey I wanted to ask a question? I have a mav 88 pistol grip I wanted to get an affordable stock and side saddle. The one you have on your instruction video looks nice
Nice job. My only criticism is port loading into mag loading. I think you are faster port loading, firing, then port loading the 2nd shell and firing. Not a huge issue by any means. Keep up the good work!
Why do you remove the shotgun from the mounted position to reload? The way I was trained was to ALWAYS keep the muzzle towards the threat. Not saying your way is wrong, I'm just curious as to how you arrived at your decision to dismount your firearm.
I dig your vids. No BS. I know you've probably put thought into it, but you might want to consider training with your brass up on your side saddle or butt cuff. I have seen it where the officer has jumped off a curb, over a wall, or a sudden drop or shake cause the shells to fall out of the cuff/saddle when the brass was down.
+grtwhtbnr Brass up is a good idea for anyone who's going to be running around with the gun or leaving it in the trunk of their car. The elastic shell holder I"m using hangs onto the shells very tight and they aren't going anywhere in my closet, and I would have to fire dozens of rounds before they work their way lose. When the elastic starts to weaken, I'll just replace the whole carrier... that's the big advantage of velcro.
Lucky Gunner Ammo True. It also takes less time to be faster with brass down. I had to practice more because I prefer brass up. Miliseconds counts when distances are within 10 yards, with projectiles moving at 1600 fps..
I don't know if it's right but i also practice shooting from the hip for when you don't want the barrel sticking out in a blind corner . I use a semi with a sling and have spare shells on the right side of the stock and learned not to look at the gun while reloading . it's surprising how accurate you can get at close range .
Loving your videos! Wish I found you sooner! Can you please discuss slug usage? I personally like to load slugs off the saddle in a reverse fashion (over the top as opposed to under the receiver) directly into the port. This way I'm able to identify the round by feel in low light. Would love to know your thoughts! Thank you!
+Hank Scot For a home defense shotgun, I see little need to use slugs. They are great for extending the range of the shotgun or for penetrating hard cover, but neither of those considerations apply to using the shotgun inside a home at a max distance of 15 yards. Even if a slug was more appropriate than buckshot for a specific scenario, there is next to no chance of having time to do a slug changeover. By the time you've determined that there's an imminent deadly threat in your home and you have eyes on him, you need to pull the trigger *now*... not in 5 seconds after changing out your ammo.
Will you be doing a video/review on any tactical lights for the home-defense shot gun? I know there's a lot out there but I'd like to get your opinion. Thanks!
Excellent suggestions! I need to really up my shotgun drill time after getting some dummy shells. What side saddle are you using and is that a shortened 870? Looks perfect for home defense.
+13noman1 The side saddle is from Vang Comp Systems, but you could easily use any velcro sidesaddle card with elastic loops (like the ones from Esstac) and just stick a strip of adhesive velcro from the hardware store to the side of the receiver instead. That's the setup I have on the Beretta 1301 and it's worked great so far.
+13noman1 I like to make my own gear, Esstac and Vang can be expensive! I bought a 55 round bandoleer and with some industrial velcro/paracord from home depot & some heavy duty stitching, made 7 6-round shell cards & 2 5-rounders. All of this cost less than 20$! You can't even buy 2 shell cards from the above companies for that much. Always DIY.
Yep got a new shorty today and user error or not the slide release was tough to operate the first time or two of completely loading and unloading. Now its more or less a breeze. Practice, practice, practice.
I have ordered a Mossberg Shockwave along with an XS tritium bead and a Streamlight HL-X light, and lastly, an SOE shotgun card to mount on the receiver my eventual plan is to do the paperwork to make it a shortbarrel shotgun, similar to yours.
I like to make my own dummy rounds made with real shells full of sand so I can get the feel and weight of the real thing. The shells I use are orange so I know there the dummy rounds, one of the pros of reloading

It's very nice to watch a guy present a video that has been well prepared. I don't usually like young people, but I appreciate this guy. Thanks.
I’ve only shot a pump action on one occasion. Super fun and my favorite so far
I am picking up my Mossberg 500 next week, can't wait to practice with your drills. Thanks!
Love these videos. The military always says "Front sight focus". Wyatt Earp always said " Take your time in a hurry ".
New to this. I truly appreciate the lessons and will practice will dummies until I find a range. Thank you.
Excellent job.

+Lucky Gunner Ammo definitely makes sense
great video. 5 star. Love the drills.
Will you be doing a video/review on any tactical lights for the home-defense shot gun? I know there's a lot out there but I'd like to get your opinion. Thanks!
I probably won't dedicate a whole video to it. I'm liking the Inforce WMLX, though.
Good video one drill I have never done... I think I will start using it.
Can you please do a video for lever action drills for home defense?
Or are they similar?
I have ordered a Mossberg Shockwave along with an XS tritium bead and a Streamlight HL-X light, and lastly, an SOE shotgun card to mount on the receiver my eventual plan is to do the paperwork to make it a shortbarrel shotgun, similar to yours.
I like to make my own dummy rounds made with real shells full of sand so I can get the feel and weight of the real thing. The shells I use are orange so I know there the dummy rounds, one of the pros of reloading
ya im cheap
I think that's actually smartest
Great videos, very clear and to the point without all the fluff. What is that short shotgun you are running?
