How to Master FAST but SOFT Playing 🤫

How to play FAST but also SOFT?
The two are often hard to combine because soft playing usually requires more control.
I recommend starting at a louder level first. Make sure that you are able to play the passage with precision at this comfortably loud volume.
Then, incrementally decrease the volume. Adjust your tactile approach as necessary. The changes will be quite subtle…but you will get used to automatically adjusting what is needed per volume level.
Use the soft pedal with care. Don’t let it “take over” for you - like I did here (notice how I swallowed notes right away at first!).
Important tip: Don’t just think of volume. I think it helps to concentrate more on the character of the passage, rather than on volume itself. Ask - WHY are you intending to play this passage soft?
    Hope that helps!!

I love the fact that when you play the line gently, it starts sounding more like a synth or a rhodes than an acoustic piano, very cool

That’s because loud sounds are not only louder than soft sounds, they sound different than soft sounds. How prominent which overtones are changes as you go soft, and that’s responsible for what you’re observing.

Man, I was thinking the exact same thing about her being able to create an "electric piano" sound on a grand piano. Sure, having a good instrument helps a lot (just think about how Michelangeli was so meticolous about the state of his pianos, especially during live performances and recordings) but as a pianist myself I know how much the 'touch' affects the resulting sound, and I love hers, very unique..

Have you ever noticed that when a singer holding a mic uncorks a really loud note they often pull the mic away from their mouth? Pulling the mic away from your mouth makes the sound softer, a lot softer, so why make a note louder and softer at the same time? Because the singer is looking for the timbre of the loud note without blowing their audience into the next room.
It’s three in the morning and you’re changing radio stations. The first one has an old recording of Cousin Brucie on WABC in NY from the sixties and he’s shouting a mile a minute. You turn to the second one and hear: “That was Beethoven Symphony #3, the Eroica, as played by the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan.” You switch to the third and you hear, barely whispered: “That was…….Miles,….from……..Kinda Blue.” Now you go back, crank up the jazz DJ, listen to the classical DJ at a normal level, and turn Cousin Brucie way down, so the whispering guy is loudest and the shouting guy is softest. Do you have any trouble telling who’s shouting and who’s whispering?
That’s a vocal manifestation of the phenomenon you’re hearing on the piano.

God exists, creation bears witness to it, but sin separates us from Him, and we sin, and deserve the hell, that is why He sent His Son Christ to live a Holy life, die on a Cross paying the penalty for our sins, saving His chosen ones of condemnation, dark powers and curses, reconciling us with God only by Faith in Jesus and His Sacrifice, *not by works,* so that no one can boast, Giving us Eternal Life, God bless you. For those who don't know the Key yet, is E flat major/C minor, is not just and ascending but also playing octaves higher, that makes the scale sound more lively (sorry for poor english)

i find it also helpful to work in the opposite direction- mastering playing it with no tone at all, then gradually bringing the sound up out of the silence.

I'm stil stuck in the "fast" stage, playing soft couldn't be less of a concern. But if ever I do learn to play fast, I'll keep this in mind.

Wow! The keys look like a liquid you're splashing your hand into. Beautiful.
That's so simple a method - approach from distance rather than going straight to the objective. I wonder how to approach doing loud with one finger and quiet with another of same hand in a harmony- can't play it, though want to write it.
Thanks so much for the demo!!
