  • I found this old video of an early morning practice session performing Kuo Lien Ying's Guang Ping Tai Chi. It is the complete set, and to me most closely represents the version that Sifu Kuo taught to all of his direct lineage students in Portsmouth Square, San Francisco. I was one of the early students to be granted permission to teach his style in 1974.
I have always tried to keep the form as close as possible to the original as what I was taught by Kuo Lien Ying. I have kept a movie diary from as early as the 1970's to be able to keep track of any enhancements or changes along the way.
I have listed the names of most of the moves according to Kuo's published book,
Tai Chi Theory and Practice. In the book he published still photos of all the moves. Of course a still cannot capture the acture movement, but it was in the old days before videos and phones.
The names might help practitioners of other Yang styles to understand this unique form.

Learned and practiced with Simu Kuo while at SF State in 2000/01. Relearning the form on my own. Your videos have been a great source to re-stoke the fire. Thank you!

Great. That is one of the goals of this channel, to help past practitioners of Sifu Kuo''s style to reconnect.

I studied from Sifu Look in the 90's. I'm now working on re-learning the Guang Ping Yang set. I really appreciate your video, your form is impeccable. I will watch this many times to improve my Tai Chi Chuan.

I am very happy that my channel will enable you to relearn the form. Be sure to go to the Guang Ping Playlist to view all the lessons for this form as well.

@randallfung5457 Absolutely! I subscribed to your channel and have started to do so. After watching your explanation of brush knee and twist step, I remembered that Sifu Look had changed this move from the original form as you demonstrated to deflecting side to side with a pulling application. When I studied from Sifu Look, in San Francisco (his TIMA studio was in Rancho Cordova then) I didn't get much experience in pushing hands. So I really appreciate your explanation of the application as Sifu Kuo taught it.

@@randallfung5457I've completed relearning the Dalu 3 days ago thanks to all the lessons on your Playlist. And I refer back to them to correct rough spots in my practice. Yesterday morning after stretching and the Universal Post, the set felt really nice. What motivated me, to relearn and return to practice was a massive heart attack I had in late October. Thankfully, and amazingly with no permanent heart damage damage. So along with cardio rehab, grateful to be above ground and not taking the day for granted, daily practice has overridden the myriad of excuses to put it off "for later".

@@jamescecil3417 Sorry to hear about your heart attack. Must have been scary. Just take it easy, one step at a time and enjoy each "new" day life has returned to you! Respect.

    Thank you.
I studied 64 movements at SFSU in 2007 and have been practicing since. No chin to toe yet.

Thank you, Randy. I studied in college from 1976-1978 from Bing Gong and Simu Kuo. This is how I learned the “original style” as they called it. Your form is beautiful!

This video brings back memories. Back in the early to mid 1970s, I learned the short form(?), of the 94 Tai Chi movement in highschool. It was taught by our P.E. coach, Greg Barber. Once a group of us had learned to complete the movements with some proficiency, Mr. Barber arranged for us to go up to San Francisco Portsmith Square one very early morning to demonstrate what we learned to the Teacher at the Tai Chi school there. After arriving in the darkness of that very early morning, we entered the square to the sounds of a voice calling out steps out of the dissipating fog. As we got closer the forms of many persons performing tai chi appeared before us out of the mist. Off to one side was a smiling old man overseeing it all. The Master! We respectful watched and waited until Mr. Barber went up to introduce his class to him. (I recall Mr. Barber telling us that he learned this form of Tai Chi from one of Master's students teaching off site). He seem very excited to see us and space was made for us to spread out and show what we had learned. He seemed pleased and later had each of us come up to shake his hand. I was told it might be a test of balance. His grip was strong and firm. And he pulled just enough to cause most of my classmates to step forward off balance. We then spent the rest of the morning watching his son perform his more energetic form and observe several individuals on the overpass practice with weapons and some form I was later told ( I think) called "sticky hands" technique. I still have the published training manual, " Wave Hands Like Clouds", by Li Po and Ananda. Thank you for posting this video.

Thank you Sifu for these videos. I am now up to four corners. It has enhanced both my chen and yang forms. Once I get this down I will practice it left handed. I wish I had learned this decades ago instead of wasting time on the cheng man ching and yang cheng fu forms. I clearly see this was yang lu chan's expression of chen along with experience in lei tai fights.

@@robertjohnson3140Would you say Guang Ping is THE original Tai Chi? I know William Chen's 60 movements well now and am wondering whether I should learn Chen style or Guang Ping first. Or should I learn 108 Yang first?

I learned this version over 10 years ago outside of Seattle from Colin Berg, a wonderful teacher. Thank you for adding this video primarily because I haven't yet found a group with whom to practice since moving from the PNW to the east coast. I'm now in Western NC and would love to find a class or instructor. Thanks!

You are very faithful. This is by far the best representation I have seen on the 'net.
I learned this system from TR Chung in Berkeley during the 1970's.

Your form is beautiful. I have interrupted the practice a few years ago. Now am trying to reclaim it from the depth of my brain/body. Your video is immensely helpful.
