  • Free Western Classic: Bonanza - Episode 137 - Rain from Heaven - A drought brings a rainmaker with a very sick daughter to Virginia City.
    Rain from Heaven
    Director: Lewis Allen
    Writer: Robert Vincent Wright
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 6 October 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
John Anderson is cast as fiercely proud rainmaker Tulsa Weems, who is averse to charging money for his services, doing so only to afford medical care for his daughter Mary Beth (Eileen Chesis). When Tulsa is arrested for pulling a gun on Ben Cartwright, Ben's son Hoss takes it upon himself to look after little Mary Beth, unaware that the girl is a carrier of the dreaded typhoid fever. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Review:
"This episode of Bonanza has the Virginia City area in a severe drought and Adam Cartwright is on a mission to get some water wagons so that they draw water from Lake Tahoe. In the meantime it's pretty hot and dry for the rest of the area and the Cartwrights are making as best due they can.
Times like this one will try anything and John Anderson from the Tennnessee hills has come to town with wife Claudia Pryar and children Mickey Sholdar and Eileen Chesis. These are some mighty proud folks who don't like handouts. But they are in need of help when the little girl comes down with typhoid fever.
A nice story about a family that learns that all the people who aren't from the Tennessee hills are not necessarily bad." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

What makes this series so great is the amazing characterizations. The family are played so well, and so consistently, that you can't help but believe they are real. And this is a credit to the writers as well. I have no doubt that even with a pile of different writers, Blocker, Roberts, etc. probably modify every script, to make sure the characters play consistently for every episode.

As I remember, this show was programmed on Sundays. Perfect time slot for late Sunday school. The themes espoused on many shows had a bit of G-D connectivity.. "I believe in the Rainmaker---the one you PRAYED to last night to help Mary Beth." The power of prayer. And angels come in all forms. When Mary Beth asks Hoss: "Are you an angel." How did she know, and have the humility to thank him. On the other hand her father was too proud, and transmitted this feeling to his son..."we're hill people and take no charity." I remember something about the "proud before the fall." Charity is man's ability to help one another...doingG-D's work. With such themes, with a good-hearted family, writers, actors and production people is is NO wonder that the show enjoyed a very long on TV. The values, Good Old American-Judeo-Christian values, seem to be lacking in the products coming out of Hollywood these days...note the declining viewership of the various self-congratulatory awards shows. And some of the actors/actresses of today seem "too proud," have the hubris that they, that we can affect "global warming, global cooling, climate change..." They said that melting artic ice would cause a rising of the seas, etc. Phooey, recent scientific data has shown that the ice pack has increased!!! Who changes the climate?? G-D does. I believe that the rain came before Adam's water wagons.
    Thanks Grjngo.

Where have the people like Ben Cartwright gone? The people who display logic, understanding, compassion, humility, confidence, self awareness, reasonable and kindness? People that used to exist in greater numbers. There definately aren't many left. When you are one you often walk alone and I feel more alone than ever. I learnt long ago that there aren't many left, but with the World gone crazy, we need people to start thinking about bringing these things out of themselves and take a hold of reality, not some percieved nonsense that so many are making up in thier heads.

Phil Selzer's remark below is just perfect! Ben always knows the right path to take. It frightens me how primitive medicine was in the West of the USA at that time: in Europe, medicines for typhoid and other high fevers were already becoming known in those same years.

    • @lynettepalecek3141

@Joe Owens. I'm impressed Joe!! You know your history. It is too bad that Europe was ahead of America for having medicines for Typhoid fever and other fevers. America also took a very long time to have medicines for rare diseases. I'm glad that I didn't live back then because if I had I would have died at a young age. You're right about Ben Cartwright. He instilled moral values in his sons which is why Hoss took Mary Beth without hesitating to the ranch house to take care of her immediately. He knew enough to quarantine her and him in a room and have Joe bring what he needed by a contraption where Joe didn't get near the little girl. What you said was well said. Hoss had such a big heart ❤! That was such an awesome ending. Ben was exactly correct. God is the real rainmaker.

My guess is there are Ben Cartwrights everywhere they just don’t get any press. And yes through all of the mess that we all have been brought up in has lowered the spirit of so many people. But when I read comments from many of the shows and movies that carry the honor and compassion for life tell me that there are more people with these precious qualities then we are led to believe. When the world starts up again we’re going to take off where the 50s left off. But this time we’re gonna get it right.

It's not a matter of believing it is real. These shows like Bonanza are shows of enjoyment, people's guidance, people can grow up with and teach youngsters. Unlike today's shows that are empty. Without purity. They don't speak to the person. Or the families. I'm very fortunate I grew up in the 60's when there was a sense of worth. Kids were taught. Parents and elders were respected. Kids didn't just sit around playing the video games all day. We're taught the value of the dollar. These were the greatest shows. Like this show with Ben Cartwright, Hoss, Adam and Little Joe.

I grew up with it. It's really good program shows. The shows on TV today lack alot of substance in them. I used to watch some reality shows like The bachelorette. And shows alike. They were kind of funny. But after awhile they lost the charisma. No pazazz. I like to watch shows that are nurturing, show principles, morals etc. Whether their real or not. Besides that's why there called shows. To entertain. To enlighten. To be enjoyable. I hope you will continue watching some yourself. They can only brighten your day. Good day.

We can't let bullies dictate what everyone enjoys watching. If u so decide or choose to let bullies or psychopaths tell u what you are going to watch. By all means go ahead.

The obvious initial solution rather than spending money on charity was to pay him half now so that he can take care of his family and half if he makes it rain, but then we wouldn't have a story... Ben knows enough to isolate the girl but not the rest of the family because it would interrupt the story.
