  • Free Western Classic: Bonanza - Episode 145 - The Legacy - When Ben goes missing and presumed dead after being shot by a poacher he was hunting alone, his sons search for the seemingly likely suspects: three innocent ex-convicts who fear being so suspected.
    The Legacy
Director: Bernard McEveety (as Bernard E. McEveety)
    Writer: Anthony Wilson
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 15 December 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
"Three men newly released from Huntsville prison make their way across the Ponderosa. When Ben and Little Joe see someone is poaching their cattle, Ben goes after them. When he comes upon those responsible, he is ambushed and left for dead. When only his horse returns to the ranch, the sons set off to find Ben's missing rifle at best or at the worst his killers." Written by DrDOS on IMDb.com
    Reviews:
"No single Cartwright dominates this particular episode, all four of them have their moments in The Legacy.
While riding the Ponderosa Ben comes across a poacher and he is shot by him. The man was one of three who were recently let out of prison and are making their way home.
Lorne Greene is left to die on the trail, but a passing drummer finds him and doctors him in the person of Robert Harris. The boys don't know Greene's alive, all they know is their father's horse comes home to the Ponderosa with blood on the saddle. All three of them take after the perpetrators and they split up each going after one of the released convicts.
All three of the sons has a story to tell in catching up with their man. Greene finds out and worries as to what they will do. If he's raised them right they'll leave it to the law. But as we know the Cartwrights are one close knit family.
It's nice and tight well constructed Bonanza episode, but there's one really bad flaw. The shooter steals Lorne Greene's rifle with a carved C on the stock. How he kept it hidden from the other two I still can't figure it out.
James Best, Sandy Kevin, and Philip Pine are the three convicts. Also in the cast in a minor role as a cowboy is James Doohan. Robert Mitchum's brother John Mitchum plays a saloon bartender. In his memoirs John Mitchum relates how well he got along with Dan Blocker who he saw as a good old boy from Texas. He was shocked when he found out Blocker was a liberal, he didn't fit the mold of a liberal in Mitchum's eyes.
Other than that one flaw The Legacy is a good episode showing Cartwright family values at their best." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Well, this was quite a "who done it". I was pleasantly surprised. Basically, a much more serious tone to this story.. The boys think their dad is killed by a poacher. And they go off a looking for them.
But along the way, three men released from prison get the blame.
But, is one of them the supposed killer? And a poacher? Watch and find out!
James Doohan and James Best in supporting roles.
I'm not a big Bonanza watcher, but this episode is very very good. If Bonanza ever gets redone, I hope the stories are this good.
Ten stars." Written by dukeb0y on IMdb.com

If someone were to ask me " Of all the 431 episodes, over those 14 seasons, which one truly showcases each Cartwright, their basic morals, character, loyalty and the love they have for each other ?" This episode would be it.
I don't even know how many times I've watched this wonderful episode over the years - the story it tells never gets old, or 'out of style'.....
No wonder they called it 'The Legacy' - they must have somehow 'known'.

That horse was also used as James Arness's mount in Gunsmoke for a time. The horse's name was Buck, and though he's listed on some sites as a thoroughbred, he definitely has the look and build of a quarter horse. Michael Landon once remarked on a talk show that Lorne Greene didn't much care for riding or horses. Still, when Bonanza was cancelled, Lorne bought Buck, for fear that the horse would end up in a bad way. He then donated Buck to a therapeutic riding center. Buck taught mentally and physically challenged children to ride until his passing in 1992 at the age of 45, an unusually long life for a horse.

If you watch the show a lot then you know the boys were taught Christian morality. It always works. Today, you have too many men that had no married father to watch over them. Only immoral women who want government handouts. It's not working out very well is it.

It is make believe but real people still wrote it ... and as a family show. Not many people like the Cartwrights around nowadays, and the values were different in the 1960s, when they wrote this stuff but people like this did exist. They still do, but nowadays they are jist few and far between. Best of all though, no politically correct BS!

This was a beautiful episode showing the great job Ben did teaching his three young men to pay attention,, and fight for what they believed in.

This was a very good episode. A heartwarming tearjerker. Only thing is, I really didn’t like the comment that the peddler made regarding Hoss. He said he was probably “slow”. WTF? Hoss is so kind, compassionate, considerate, hard working, fun loving and intelligent. NOTHING slow about him‼️ I can’t stand the way that truly sweet and kind people are regarded as “slow” or dumb. It’s sickening.👎

    • @jadezee6316
      @jadezee6316 2 роки тому +9

the peddler was feeling worse by the minute after learning how Ben and his sons relationships were.....by the end he was fully aware of all he had missed in life.....it was a very sad reminder of what a lot of people feel as they age.....he was merely looking for some little thing to give him a bit of comfort.....by saying what he did about Hoss....he attempted to give himself a bit of breathing room....he never found it....

I make it a point to watch this episode of Bonanza each Father's Day. To me it is the best episode of the series, because it's shows the very essence of the Cartwright family-their love of the Cartwright boys for their father, and his love and concern for THEM as well. Special mention to young Danny Paige, who gives the audience the entire backstory of where his father has been and why with a very innocent story, and Colonel Chapin, who was an almost "Dark Cartwright" version of Ben, with a son nowhere NEAR as noble as any ONE of Ben's three! My favorite line comes FROM Colonel Chapin, when he looks Billy up and down after warning Billy NOT to go after Joe, saying with voice tinged with both admiration and regret "You wouldn't even UNDERSTAND him!"

A Great Episode :) but i was surprised the writers wrote it in such a way that the Cartwright boys assumed straight away that their dad was killed and they had to kill the guy who did it...i mean, usually they say there should be a trial. So, i am a bit surprised that: (a) they did not know for sure their dad was dead, and (b) they were willing to take the law in their own hands....

Ben, Adam, and Hoss Cartwright weren't wearing their hats when they went outside to great Little Joe when Little Joe came home. That shows how worried they were about Little Joe. Little Joe said that the Colonel's son confessed to shooting Ben Cartwright. He said that towards the end of the show. How so many missed that is amazing.

I think that the main reason that the other three Cartwrights weren't shown wearing hats is because a) the scene takes place quite early in the morning (there's a shot of a sunrise at the start of that scene) and b) because all of them (and Mr. Doerman) had been up all night, worrying about the fate of the Prince of the Ponderosa.

An EXCELLENT episode! I'd like to have it end with Ben telling the hawker to set up at the crossroads on the edge of his property because "I bet that you'll do good business there, and maybe we'll become part of your regular route."
The only thing that I didn't like was Little Joe gathering all of the town's men together in the bar. The felt really odd. It was also odd that the general's (?) men quickly disappeared when directed by the son when that was clearly against the general's wishes. It was expedient but would have made more sense if the son stopped Joe on the trail after he had been released.

what i dont like about the start of this show - is that no way would ben have really gone alone. that is just stupid. and the guy is hiding behind the bush, and ben yells at him, while on his horse ? no way - he goes behind the tree, gets off his horse, and yells at him, while he is holding his gun. this is so obvious that anyone in that circumstance would have done that, automatically.

How can anyone complain about an episode like The Legacy that shows how Ben's raising of his three boys left them with the ability to make a good decision under such emotional circumstances? However much I liked it, there is something that wasn't finished and that was the return of Ben's horse Buck. I am afraid I missed who it was who shot Ben but he also shot Buck. The horse turned up at the campsite where the three men whom Joe, Hoss, and Adam believed killed their father. At first, one of the men mentioned taking home with them but was told the wounded horse would just slow them down, so they left Buck behind. That was the last time we saw Buck. In the end, I saw Scout and Chub side by side and Cochise off to one side but I didn't see Ben's horse nor was he mentioned. Maybe it's because I not only love animals but I am a.so crazy about horses that I am bothered by this. Still, that won't change my opinion that The Legacy ranks, to me, as one of the best of the over 400 episodes of this great series.
