Jolly well argued Owen. I was severely injured whilst serving with the Royal Air Force and had to attend a Jobcentre interview about my ESA claim. The idiot "advisor" asked if I had considered a cleaning job and when I said that I can't stand for any length of time he asked, and I still can't believe this came out of his mouth, "Well, can't you clean sitting down?"
    I just walked away.

The young lady sat next to Owen is almost a caricature of the pushy and smarmy jobcentre worker. It is clear that she has no compassion or any understanding of the complex nuances of people's individual conditions, yet she appears absolutely convinced of her own righteousness as she wears that permanent smug smirk on her face.

I am a carer and often in contact with patients afflicted by mental health issues.
Owen is absolutely right. Lin May in my opinion lives on coocoo land. She keeps banging on about jobs from home.
What jobs is she talking about?
What is the evidence of all these jobs offers?
Lin reiterates about the phenomenon of smart working like the ultimate solution. It is a very reductive and simplistic view of complex disability issues.
Disabled people with physical or mental issues are not interviewed by professionals. I have assisted people going through these interviews and none of interviews were held by health professionals in the disability field.
I noticed how very quickly the interviewer's tone became antagonistic towards the person interviewed.
The response for refusal of engagement, for instance, is coercion. The menace of punitive financial measures are put on the table quite quickly. There is absolutely no consideration of the actual impact is going to have on the disability issues wether physical or mental.
The base line seems to be an actual disbelief of the interviewer of the claimed disability despite a clear letter from health professionals like GPs.
Regrettably I have heard many times arguments from non professional like Lin May claiming that when they were on work support scheme that many wanted to do this or that and working releases pleasure and fulfillment.
It maybe true for some but it cannot used as some kind of foundation for disability policy.
Disability is an extremely difficult issue and layered with unique complexities. It can't be reduced into a package offered in offices by untrained medical professionals who can only provoke the participants with punishments and sanctions.
I am quite disconcerted by people like lLin May who believe that they can offer such a straight, reductive and shallow answer to a complex issue.
Lin appears to have received a good standard of education but at the same time she is completely wrapped up in her experience when she was involved in the work scheme program. Ms May isn't a medical professional but obviously believes she got the answers..........
Has she done any real work alongside disabled people or mental patients?
From what I seen and heard I doubt that.

I am autistic and I can only work a small amount of hours. If I work more than 14 or 16 I get too over stimulated and need more days off to recover. So forcing people with threat of no money makes disabilities worse. They feel cornered and patronised.

I am exactly the same. For thirteen years the Tories have used any financial sticky point to cut money for the poorest and disabled. Attitudes towards disabilities has become very regressive and if you have a hidden disability and aren't physically seen to be struggling, you don't stand a chance. The attitude towards work is also too black and white, the government wants everyone to be in full-time work, and that's not possible.

Ugh, that woman is horrible. She is not listening. The majority of work in this world is not flexible, you can’t show up one day and not the next. Does she think that jobs like she suggests come from the sky? If the role is not available, you can’t apply for it.
Reality is, they are taking from the poor and vulnerable rather than target the people with the real money that could fill the hole in this country’s finances.

The current system needs revisiting on who they get to asses and how they asses, you also need recent letters from professional which isn’t always how it works, often you’ll get letters and then those letters will stop

one of the biggest things to make mental health worse, is to sit there and do nothing all day, those with depression as an example. it is a medical fact that they get worse if they do nothing. so allowing those with depression to sit at home on welfare. is not helping, they should be made to work interact with other people etc. not sit looking at the same four walls with their thoughts making things worse.

I’m asking because if there’s a significant amount then any real help that can be given, might benefit enough of them to make it a good thing , when I say benefit I mean mentally and possible job satisfaction, of course it has to be done as a compassionate exercise, not as a cash saving enterprise, and If the figures are nothing compared to the overall population, then the Government should concentrate on their job,
