- The population of England and Wales saw the biggest annual increase in 75 years to just under 61 million people, according to new estimates.
The Office for National Statistics estimates there are just under 61 million people living in the two nations.
The rise in the year leading up to mid-2023 is mostly due to immigration. 622,000 more people arrived legally from outside the UK than left.
By comparison, there were only 400 extra people in England and Wales as a result of births outnumbering deaths, the lowest so-called 'natural change' to the population since mid-1978.
Labour have pledged to 'reduce' net migration, but unlike the Tories did not commit to a legally binding limit in their manifesto.
It's also been reported today that Labour are delaying legal restrictions on foreign workers until next year.
Close to 1.1 million people arrived legally from outside the UK in the year leading up to mid-2023.
When you take away the number who left, you end up with an extra 622,000 people.
By comparison, there were only 400 extra people in England and Wales as a result of births outnumbering deaths.
This rate of so-called 'natural change' in the population was the lowest since mid-1978.

I ask Mr Owen Jones. If they are a net benefit why is the tax burden highest in 80 years .... Makes no logical sense
Mate it crazy.. immigrants apparently contribute more that they take out🤣🤣 with the amount of immigrants we have, what's going wrong.
Jones is a self obsessed lefty woofter.
@@fratty123 brexit
@@nobreshit.9694we’ve had faster GDP growth than rest of EU since Brexit, so no it’s not Brexit.
Check other taxes, we've for some reason decided to decimate corp tax, wealth taxes etc. and everyone is astounded when we no longer bring in the money? Absolutely baffling!
IF OWEN INVITED 10 PEOPLE FOR DINNER AND 60 PEOPLE TURNED UP WOULD IT NOT AFFECT HOW MUCH FOOD EACH PERSON GOT DID THEY EVER GO TO SCHOOL ITS JUST LAUGHABLE
You forgot to say that in this so-called comparison, if 10 people were invited and 60 people turned up and PAID (important point, don't forget it) then they would be a contribution force higher than the 10. Now do you understand, simple Maxxi?
This woman is a mess, literally makes no sense what so ever.
The woman is a member of the Institute of Economic Affairs think tank. Which gave us Liz Truss economics. Listen to her if you want higher mortgages 🙄
What’s that got to do with immigration 🙄 ?
Because if she supports disaster Trussenomics , she won't know what she's talking about regarding immigration.
@@barneyrubble8590Reply deleted. If you can't trust her judgement about Liz Truss, how can you trust her judgement on immigration?
@@user-im8us6sg5d get your point, just as I don’t trust labour’s judgement on immigration. They will keep increasing the population!
@@user-im8us6sg5dit’s funny how Labour is now dancing to the tune of Liz Truss about growth, growth, growth. Although her execution was abysmal, what she said was actually true.
Immigrants should have health insurance for the first 5 years. Then once they have worked and contributed into the system for those five years, they can use the NHS.
British people are having less kids because they can’t move out of their parent’s home due to high house prices and rents. Bringing millions and millions of extra people in when we already have a housing shortage is only going to make the problem worse. We need to build more houses (private and council), net zero immigration, automate low skill low paid job roles and train up our own population so we aren’t poaching Drs and Nurses etc from other countries which need them there.
Agree but this is just not going to happen. Bringing people over from India to work in low paid jobs is absolutey crazy, they will need housing benefit etc and it will just put working class British kids out of work.
We’ve been invaded!! Get them out now!!
I wonder if Owen would be happy to have immigrants housed in his neighbourhood?
All these people coming over in small boats need to be put into jobs to pay for their stay here and need to claw back the £8 million a day on Hotels
They need to be sent back to France. They have no right to be here. If people want to come, they should apply LEGALLY.
Yes they do just seen a video where they are threatening Irish people
My Man Richard from North Yorkshire was the only person talking sense.
He sounded like a well known Utuber (Army Paz)that i follow.
That Owen matey gets on my nerves woke lefty
He's a self confessed woofer. No wonder birth rates are decreasing!
I agree,he’s insufferable 🤮
What does some mean ?
We need immigrants. We all are immigrants.
70 million not enough? Infrastructure needs to catch up first! You say we need immigrants, well they’re here already,600,000 last year and 400,000 year before ffs! Why aren’t they taking these extra jobs?
I’m not an immigrant, I was born here and still live here. Do you even know what an immigrant is?
@@barneyrubble8590 DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Vine said in the video it's 61 million,m why do you lot ALWAYS have to exaggerate everything? btw -
Immigration health surcharge
Since 6 April 2015, non-EEA nationals have had to pay the immigration health surcharge when applying for a visa to stay in the UK for over 6 months, unless they are exempt from paying the surcharge.
From 1 January 2021, the immigration health surcharge will also need to be paid by EEA and Swiss nationals coming to the UK for stays of more than 6 months.
People who have paid the surcharge (or who are exempt from having to pay it or have had the requirement waived) can use the NHS in a similar same way to an ordinarily resident person while their visa remains valid. They will still need to pay for certain NHS services, including prescriptions, dental treatment and assisted conception services.
The surcharge is £470 per year for students and those on Youth Mobility Scheme visas and £624 per year for all other visa and immigration applications. The same amount must be paid for any dependants.
@@davidneverdaveDo you live in the same town you grew up in?
No,you bring in what you need to keep the country and its public services going.its up to the british people to step up and lower its need.but that isnt happening anytime soon.
600,000 came here last year and 400,000 year before that’s at least a million,so immigrants are here and can take the jobs now ..but they’ll have to wait for all the houses to be built 🙄

Silly Owen Jones again, Why don't you invite Matt Goodwin on, his got plenty of facts.🙄
Literally everything he said is objectively true.
@pdempseyful All he kept saying was "Its not true," but gave no evidence or statistics, Won't debate anyone like Douglas Murray or Matt Goodwin.
@@dooda77penn19 He was t given a chance as he kept getting interrupted. What he did say are objective facts whether you like him or dislike him.
Douglas Murray is a charlatan and a grifter of the highest order who likes to smile at the idea of kids being killed in the Middle East.
You’re also wrong on that too as Owen has tried to get him on his show several times. He’s more interested in speaking with right-wing media.
We need immigrants to boost the economy. Especially as British people have stopped having children
@@dooda77penn19 he’s an idiot!
That young, confused girl sounds like Truss. Close your eyes and listen😂😂😂
Since brexit, xenophobia has been normalized in England. Britain is a small pathetic island who should feel lucky to have people coming in.
If we’re so ‘Xenophobic’ ‘small’ and ‘pathetic’ why do so many people want to come?
@davidneverdave we just want back the money you stole from the rest of the world... 😆🤣 trust me, in a few years, you'll be on your own misery.. brexit showed the English arrogance
@@davidneverdave to upset people like you
@davidneverdave unlike what you think it's not that many people, Italy has higher immigration rates than the uk. Plus, people come from poorer nations and, reasonably enough, they want to make money to send back home. The other thing you got going is the language, meaning that, despite the immense racism, people think they might get better jobs in the uk than Greece because they're familiar with English
@davidneverdave this doesn't mean brexit did not make the uk smaller, more xenophobic, and irrelevant. It did! People move to Luxembourg to work because Luxembourg has a minimum wage way better than yours, and, unlike the delusional brits, no Luxembourgish thinks his/her country is a super power. Luxembourg' strength is to be in Europe. You had that, but threw it way because your racism took over.
Labour basically have 5 years to sort this and if they don't Reform will so Starmer has his work cut out

It’s actually way higher than that now. IHS went up to >£1000 from October last year.
