Earthquake strikes Tokyo as it braces for worst storm in decades

- A magnitude 5.7 earthquake was felt throughout Tokyo overnight just as Typhoon Hagibis, the largest storm to hit Japan in over half a century, made landfall as a Category 2 storm west of Tokyo. Ramy Inocencio reports.

The epicenter wasn't Tokyo, but Chiba. I was in Tokyo during the earthquake, and it didn't feel like a Mag 5+.

5.7 is really not much. In our building only those on the upper floor felt anything, and it only lasted a few seconds.

Compared to the category 4 & 5 Hurricanes that steamroll Florida and the Caribbean islands on a regular basis, a Cat2 is a light breeze.

Six Seven Zero it’s the worst storm in over 50 years for (JAPAN). Since they haven’t seen one this impactful for quite some time.
Hagibis is probably going to end up as one of the most expensive typhoons on record, the most costliest is mirielle.

Hurricane Ike in 2008 was a cat2 but had a 23ft storm surge that wiped an entire barrier island off the map, including concrete structures.
Hurricane stan in 2005 killed well over a 1000 people from flooding and it was “only” a cat1.
The Bhola cyclone was a cat2 at landfall but yet, is the deadliest cyclone on record at 500,000.
Hurricanes aren’t just wind, in fact 60-90% of tropical cyclone deaths come from flooding.

How does an typhoon set off an earth quake ? Or are they just really unlucky ?
Dorian did the same thing. I’m pretty sure there have been others but I have to look it up. It’s gonna happen more often. The storms are stronger and they displace weight, which also affects plate tectonics on a pretty surface level. That’s just my thoughts and opinions on the why.

It's unfortunate that Japan has to suffer a typhoon *and* an earthquake at the same time. The typhoon has little or nothing to do with the quake however. It hay surprise some that Japan gets a number of tremors _EVERY DAY,_ but not dangerous ones usually.
