I had this cat, Spooky, she lived 22 years. One day the vet told me that she was not going to last for much longer. On the day, I just sensed it, Spooky lay on the bed next to me and we just lay together till she passed. I am so glad that I spent those last hours together. I think we were both comforted by it. Spooky you're in my heart and never forgotten.

My old cat Charlie was incontinent and had "kitty dementia" before he passed. When he started that, my wife wanted him put down. I kept up with it for almost 2 years! He passed peacefully in my arms, at home. For that, I will be eternally grateful.

The same thing happened with my 19 yr old cat who passed away last year. I took extra care of her for 2 yrs before she finally went, and I'll never regret making that decision. My family wanted to put her down after her stroke, but she was her sweet self till her last day, even though she was a mess of an old cat. I admire the dedication. Not everyone understands, but you did an amazing favor for that little one.

My little boy almost made it to 18 years of age. For 16 years he did really great, but in the last two his hearing went, his did not verbalize much and it was not very loud, and his purring was very muffled compared to the roar it had been, he vomited a lot and became very picky about what he ate, and would not drink sometimes which caused me to use an eyedropper to hydrate him which worked very well, he also lost a lot of weight. He liked to play until only a few months before he passed. He had a few problems with the litter box but not much and he had only one incident of confusion. He loved being cuddled and petted until a couple of months before he passed, and he would like to stay near me, with in visual range all the time. In the end he stopped grooming himself and in the last few weeks he became unable to jump up on things or get down from heights. He was my buddy and I miss him very much.

My little diva is 16, I’ve noticed she is getting weaker and seems more stiff especially in hind legs. Even with her increased napping she still plays at times in shorter periods, goes outside often even if it’s not off the front sidewalk, the main thing is that she is definitely more cuddly, she wants to spend more time in my lap and being held, she was always an “on her own terms” kind of cat, not sure if it’s the age or the new kittens (1-1/2 now) that’s lead to this. She’s changed some of her habits too and tends to groom me more than she ever did, instead of just my head she’ll groom my face and beard, I try to let her as much as my skin can take her rough little tongue. With that, she doesn’t groom herself as much but let’s me know when she wants to be brushed or pet with wet hands (she’ll burst into the bathroom for that). I give her any food she asks for, her favorites are roast beef, raw meat, and watermelon. She seems content for now, and other than the stiffness and shakiness when she first gets up she seems to be happy, which is all I can ask for.

He doesn't keep his white paws quite as clean as he used to either, but that's ok. My other one has occasionally peed inappropriately (on say a dirty pair of jeans I tossed by the bedroom door to bring down for wash)... I just chock it up as they needed washing anyways.

She was adopted by me and some neighbours and she used to come and go from one home to another, until in 2020 she became ill with diabetes, so I kept her at home with me, which she didn't like too much. In the end she had become skin and bones with a big belly, I gave her two insulin shots each day and other treatments but she couldn't clean her fur and didn't like to be brushed, made all her "needs" on the floor that I kept covered with paper, rugs et cetera. The last time I brought her to the veterinary he advised me not to let her go on like that. Skippy got an embolism that immobilized his back legs, and caused great pain on Halloween (2:30 AM). As the Vet said it would likely be irreversible, I decided to let him go. Skippy passed on peacefully, as I gave him chin rubs. He had been sleeping more, and did want to sleep on my lap more often in the last 3 months.

Several things help with taking care of elderly cats, but some are just things you should do in general even if they aren’t elderly. Like, get a water fountain for them! A bubbler/flow pump like ones used in aquarium kits will help a lot to keep the water fresh for longer. Proper food and vet care, proper grooming care. Don’t cheap out on any of those, but be careful since “expensive” doesn’t always equals to “best”. A good vet clinic or hospital will often have someone that specializes in scheduling diets for pets with special needs (like diabetics, renal and cardio pets), some places will even be able to either find for you or mix/make targeted pet food for your pet needs, even if they might be a bit pricey. Medicated food other than the special need ones and dietary aids might need to be incorporated in their daily routine depending on their situation as well. Learning how to give them oral meds and how to trim their murderpaws can often be learned with some time and care and help a whole lot for home care of elderly pets, so don’t be shy and ask for tips or outright help on learning those from your local vets. More often than not they will really appreciate the help on those.

Yes, you are so knowledgeable. one of my cats , at 18, get Hills science diet. there is little to no regulations on pet food ingredients. The following is the advice I send to cat owners:
Iim a vet volunteer. try cutting back on dry food. it cause urinary blockage and kidney disease. Upgrade to Purina One. you cats will live longer. Use more canned food and mix water into it. if you have a senior cat. bring it on for a full senior blood panel. it tests overall health. Suggest not letting them out, or near the woods, because especially at night. predator attacks on cats are on the rise, coyotes. in the very U S state. Have fun 🐈

I still have my 17 year old cat named Jackie, who I adopted from my parents when she was 4 years old because they were going to give her back to the shelter, since she was having behavior issues and couldn’t get along with two new kittens they had gotten. So Jackie became my cat rather than return to the shelter, because I was very attached to her.
Fast forward 13 years later and Jackie is still my cat and still doing well - both of the kittens that drove her out of her house are dead, as well, but Jackie is still going strong. She’s an extremely polydactyl cat, too - 26 total toes with 8 on each of her front paws and 5 on her back paws… that’s a lot of claws to clip.

    • @leosunrising

Maybe it was the type of litter you used. Try to use various kinds that won’t bother sensitive paws. Or maybe a lightweight variety. Sometimes a different litter box is needed. Perhaps one that kitty can easily step into. They make ones for senior cats that have very low sides. My friend put pee pads in an empty low sided litter box for her senior cat and he started using the litter box again. Just some suggestions for you. Good luck.

@@leosunrising I spent over $100 on litter. We moved into a new house and they never got used to it. In my apartment, they NEVER skipped the cat box. Never. They’ve since passed on. They were 14 and I loved them dearly. Trust me, the vet recommended multiple cat boxes on all floors of my house and I wasn’t going to have my house with multiple liter boxes on every floor of my house. I loved them, but they had medical problems and had to be put to sleep. Trust me, those cats were my heart. They had regular medical checkups and dental cleanings, and custom lion haircuts. I don’t want another pet. It still hurts. Take care.

Our elderly cat Itty Bitty has IBD, and her appetite was on and off. After spending tons of money on diagnostics and various prescription novel protein foods, we almost lost her on several occasions. The vet said a probiotic might help, and that Proviable was the only probiotic that had been clinically proven effective. We decided to start giving her Proviable 2x a day, along with a mostly hydrolyzed protein diet. Her turnaround has been astonishing, and knowing what I know now, I would try Proviable on any cat who has health issues and/or is losing their appetite.

My sweet girl Chachi, is 20+ and exabits almost all of these behaviors...poor baby. I think the most challenging for me is the loud scream meowing in am, then refusing the food I cook for her. I groom her daily and have to wash her paws because she no longer grooms herself. I adopted her at 4? years from a shelter and she's been a wonderful companion for the last 16 years...sadly she unlike my other previous 6 cats has never been a lap cat, although now she will let me hold her for a few minutes

Basically the same as humans. And dogs. We had two cats and one dog pass away from old age. While the cats were mentally and physically OK until their last days - no dementia, incontinence or other "undesirable" things, our dog was much worse, suffering from most of the things mentioned in the video. Currently we have one dog and one cat. They are both "in their prime", slowly coming into their autumn of life, in the case of the older cat, she might already there. But lucky for us, no health problems. Both remain active and have no health problems so far.

I have sibling Ragdolls just about 17 years old. I know they have kidney issues but they still use the box well, eat well, vomit sometimes, but that's not really anything new. The hard thing right now is, they've always been very vocal, but now they'll ratchet it up to screaming. It doesn't seem to be associated with pain, maybe more dementia, because if I speak sharply, whichever one is at it will stop, and/or, the squirt bottle is pretty effective. They still love each other, will groom each other, and even sometimes play. They see well enough to jump from a low table into a window sill. But the screaming, oh my gosh, I've never experienced anything like it, and it sends me nearly into a panic. Maybe it's because in that moment, they're panicked?
