Usually I prefer original songs instead of cover songs, but this is one of the best covers ever.
I have read quotes of college professors saying that when he was their student studying music,, there was nothing they could teach him, that it seemed like he came with his talents built-in and that he taught them things❤
Donny Hathaway had such a soulful voice. He had a lot of great songs. "The Ghetto", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Little Ghetto Boy", "For All We Know", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know". I really like the songs he did with Roberta Flack especially "Where Is The Love" & "The Closer I Get To You". He struggled with mental health issues during his life. Sadly he died in 1979 at only 33 years of age.

Yes, Donnie had pure emotion in all he sung. I can't think of anyone else with more emotion in song. He is the father of Lalah Hathaway. Check out, 'For All We Know', 'Someday We'll All Be Free'.

I’m reading a new biography of this song’s author Leon Russell. It quotes some of Leon’s unfinished memoir where he states, even decades after Donny recorded this, that it’s still Leon’s favorite version. I love that because I love both Leon AND Donny❤
Super talented man. He was an incredible vocalist and an incredible pianist. Tragically died way too young. Had one of those voices that can reach deep into your heart and give you chills. If you ever get a chance check out the Unsung documentary on him I think it's here on UA-cam.

Hi Chod. Donnie Hathaway sings This Christmas. One of my favorite Christmas songs. This is a nice cover. You should hear the original by Leon Russell who was a session musician in LA. He is a prolific song writer and a solo performer. Leon also mentored other artists, including the GAP band

I'm a little late getting back to your channel. Now I see you haven't posted in a month. I hope that this is not an idication that your troubles have returned.
Anyway, this was a beauty. I have never heard of Donny Hathaway, but will certainly look him up to hear more. I see from reading the comments that he was emotionall troubled and tragically died before his time. Sadly this is much too common. May his soul rest in peace

Had some huge hits in the 70s, as duets with Roberta Flack had limited success on his own and tragic story. He was bipolar, and lept from a building in New York City, and killed himself at a young age.
The late great Donny Hathaway. Best version of a Leon Russell tune, of course Karen Carpenter sang it well also ,but this is the definitive version for me. Donny inspired Steve Wonder, they sound very similar. He is also the father of Lalah Hathaway.

Hey Chod! This is an awesome song and rendition. It’s a Leon Russell masterpiece (Bonnie cowrote Groupie (Superstar)). A year after Donnie, Carpenters released their album A Song For You and recorded the song but didn’t release it as a single. Still, it’s one of Karen’s top vocals. She goes looow a couple of times during it. Donny was a big deal and this is his masterpiece. Leon also recorded it as he did with all his songs. The best Carpenters version is an audio track. There is a video and you can see Karen looking beautiful. Bit the audio track is the bomb. Enjoy a cover…
