  • The double leg takedown can be an effective takedown in BJJ. But it does run the risk of putting you in a Guillotine Choke if you aren't careful. So having a good Guillotine Choke counter is really important if you plan to use takedowns in BJJ.
In this video I give some basic details on how a simple Guillotine works and how to counter it if you're shooting a Double Leg takedown.
Discussing the Guillotine Choke counters. I show the importance of understanding how the angles work. How cutting across the person's body is incredibly important and will allow you to free yourself or at least not get submitted.
The 2 Guillotine Choke counters I show have been mainstays for me in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The 1st one is simple switching from a Double to a Single Leg takedown and making sure we keep ourselves at the correct angle to avoid the choke.
The 2nd involves quickly switching our grip once we feel the person locking up the choke. We will keep a little opening for ourselves and hop over to the other side.
Again, getting ourselves at the correct angle to avoid the choke.
Both of these techniques are Guillotine Choke Counters because they are initiated after the choke is being used following the takedown attempt.
I did this video for Elijah who wrestled in High School and has found that adjusting his takedowns to Brazilian Jiujitsu is a bit difficult. He says that when he shoots he is just walking right into the Guillotine Choke.
I know the feeling because I did the same thing when I started my BJJ training.
If you're in the same situation and having trouble with Double Leg takedowns in BJJ because of the Guillotine Choke.
Then I hope the details in this video help!
    Thanks!
    -Chewy

Super helpful breakdown of guillotine fundamentals.
Like many things in grappling (and life), learning the defense is really going to improve my attack.

One way to not get caught in the guillotine is to ensure when you shoot for a takedown your head isn't on the outside of your opponents hip, switch your head pressure to center of the body and you'll significantly reduce the amount of times you're caught up in a guillotine setup.

Awesome! My classmates love to punish doubles with the guillotine. Would you consider doing a video on take-downs over hard surfaces? (ie. asphalt)
If you already have, please disregard.

I'm sure I'll need this sometime. inexperienced people will shoot too soon and I usually get an easy guillotine (Don't tare my playhouse down).

Hey Chewwy, I recently started training in BJJ and I'm really loving it, however I find myself struggling to finish the omoplata. I always get the arm locked around my leg, but I always find that I can't get the last movement to get the tap. Please help. Love your work

What about the high elbow? Even if you land in side control, it will submit you.. and there is no possibility to corssface as the opponent has already raised his elbow, blocking you from crossfacing him.

Even if they have a high elbow, it should be very difficult to finish someone if they get into side control and their head is perpendicular to the opponent's body.

So how can we escape from it if the opponent both defend against the takedown by taking his legs back and take us into guillotine, making it an “on the knees” guillotine?

You cant prevent a sprawl, maybe just switch to a single leg if ur expecting them to sprawl
