    While I bleed green I have always been drawn to the IH because I love the design of the Steigers. Spent time in 8630 and 8960 and 4366 so it is a toss up for me as I enjoyed them all. Nice of those folks to let you store your toys in their barn. Heck of a nice barn too. As far as horsepower it is amazing what the newer front wheel assist tractors have and what they will pull. They have in my opinion replaced a lot of the articulated machines just because of their versatility. But I still love them. They are big and boxy and loud and are a real mans tractor.

    Nice lookin old John Deere G sitting there. I have one of those I restored several years ago. Nice running old tractor very distinctive sound. It will idle down slow enough to count the revolutions of the fly wheel.

    I grew up on a farm in central Kansas where we owned several brands of tractors, including JD and IHC. My father often said that JD worked their design engineers overtime while IHC sent them home at noon on Friday. Your comments about the hydraulic valve placement are just one example of not quite getting the job done correctly. However my father often times cussed the "sexy" tin that made working on JD equipment more difficult than other brands. One example we experienced daily was our family owned both a 560 IHC and a 3020 JD. The 3020 was light years ahead of the 560 in drive-ability and creature comforts as well as the hydraulics and turning brakes.
    Thanks for your series on farm equipment of various styles and brands! Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

    Those are 2 great looking tractors , definitely above average condition , sharp looking units ! Myself operate a small grain farm in Manitoba , some years ago bought a 1976 IHC 4366 with 4,200 hours on the clock. , a year later bought a 1981 4586 , 5,400 hours , and like your 4886 , still has the original V8 motor in her. Basic tractors , duals on both , good floatation. And they fit in the budget.

    Nice collection. I prefer the looks of the international. I remember when they came out they were very impressive and powerful
    Looking tractors. They are cheaper horsepower. The tractors 100 hp and under bring better money at farm auctions. Both your tractors have good rubber lots of tread. They’re very expensive to replace. Merry Christmas, from Ontario Canada.

    The JD 8850 has the sound guard cab which is very comfortable for long shifts and the controls far more refined compared to the 4786 budget built cab. Same with both tractor transmissions/drive trains the IH design is much simpler to work on as it's componentry in design as the JD is much more integrated and original and guess more expense to rebuild. If correct the 4786 list price was $79k (1981) compared to the JD $120k (1988) new price. Congratulations of your acquisition of two classic tractors.

    I worked for a neighbor in 1981 who had a new 8440. We put on a pair of side shields like your. they were not made by John Deere but I can not remember who made them. They helped to keep the fan from sucking in corn stalks in muddy condition. Bad Axe Michigan

    Considering the IH was at the End of its run it was in major need of cabin updates and the 7788 was the typical IH Lipstick on a pig as they called it . If IH would have carried on with the Ideas from the Hough Division they would've had a better player . Steigers were a great tractor and IH should have offered it with the 817 Inline or the larger 1000 inch engine. IH never was really keen on the larger 4wds cause they had big plans to scale up the 2+2s to 400 horse cummins power

    You should try to get up to Crosby North Dakota to the Knudson farm the old man was making crab steer big tractors starting in the 60's. I was surprised they made the 8850 so long. The local dealership sold one new and then wouldn’t take it back in on trade cause the reputation made it hard to sell. V configured deisel just never seem to last like a six. Don’t have a lot knowledge but
    Is it due to two rods between each main cap. What was the deeres engine trouble

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  Рік тому

      The 8850 is on an up swing in the past year. The last Kinze Re Power 8850 sold for $111,000 at auction this week. An 8850 with the V8 and 3,500 hours brought $71,000 this week. Last year an 8850 with 7,100 hours brought $52,000. It has become a collectors tractor. The V8s weakness was using the tractor for more than it was powred for and the engine not keeping up.

    Why does the JD look way more newer? Is it the non-sun fainted paint? The less worn out tires? Or, JD sticking around until tdy, and not changing appearance (colors, design) that much on the outside?

    • @alans.4167
      @alans.4167 3 роки тому +1

      2 main design features...
      1. The cab, the John Deere has curved glass. All the John Deeres with curved cabs look more modern next to tractors with square cabs.
      2. The grill, the IH's gray "eggcrate" design really dates it. That style grill was even popular with cars and trucks of that era so it really stands out as 1970's/ very early 80's.

    The cab is noisy to me when I drive my neighbor's 1981 4386 and I was surprised at the amount of glare from the hood when you drive into the sun. Definitely a bare bones tractor but a good looking tractor. The Deere entry into the cab has always been disagreeable with me and Deere didn't have a nice entry until they went away from the Sound Gard cab. I prefer the access to the batteries in my 7050 where you pull a pin and they swing out into the open.

    Laughed at the hydraulic controls. The other Steigers all seemed to have that same installation, but it always looked like it was put there with a combination of a cutting torch, sledgehammer and an axe lol. Never elegant. Just functional. The IH branded ones are fancy, by comparison. Only once did I do any damage with those sticking crude controls. It tried to unfold a cultivator that was locked in transport position, at start up. Made me use a bad word.

      I thought the Steigernationals were way behind the green Steigers, at least as far as the series 3 and on green Steigers anyway

      Very nice line up. I have a 4786, 4586 and 4366 featured here on the channel but a 4386 and 4186 have eluded me do far.

    I see john deere wised up and moved the exhaust and air cleaner to the side rather than keeping in the middle of the hood.
