      Key word being almost. I'm not saying it's not impressive, it's just not the same as a normal deadlift and shouldn't be counted as such.

    • @bulletproof1581
      @bulletproof1581 9 місяців тому +10

      In terms of it being an impressive sumo yeah, in terms of it being the same as conventional no. Range of motion isn't even the big issue which is still an issue, but you use different parts of your legs when you do sumo, so yeah it's a different lift from putting more emphasis on slightly different areas. Like a bicep curl compared to a hammer curl, still curls, but still different

    • @mazocco
      @mazocco 9 місяців тому +2

      @@bulletproof1581the same way as the squat when you do it with your feet close together or wide open, or the bench press, when you do it with your hands close together or farther apart. Muscles will be activated differently but that is not the point of the lift. The point is lifting the weight from a certain point up to a certain point and back. And that is specially true if we're letting people use straps or even hook grip, that dont demand superhuman forearm muscles.

  • @Asuavatior

    Your speed off the ground is no problem, the issue is when your quads are out of the lift and your back takes over. Your back is weak relative to your leg drive. I think if you did lots of elevated deadlifts 13”/15”/18” and focused on back strengthening without leg drive that will help get 1000lb+ conventional and 500kg+ sumo.
    I just did this exact same thing and my deadlift is blowing up.

And that he reduced this necessary rest time by doing active recovery like ice and hot stuff. I recommend watching that video if you haven't already done so or implemented the advice.

    Piece of advice Jamal and it's something that almost no lifters no about, but your sticking point, so that exact range of your motion where it feels crappy, that needs to be trained, so where your lift starts to feel difficult is where you should start a block pull deadlift from, and where it stops feeling difficult is where you should finish a block pull deadlift. This is to be done half the time along side your full range of motion deadlifts. The best training that's most effective in the same kinda way, is not using a leg press that you can put a shit tonne of plates on, but deliberately using a leg press that feels heavier with way less weight, something about being able to apply more force to your legs in this way actually makes you stronger, and it's the same with targeting sticking points specifically, yes it will feel crappy and it will be extra effort, but that's the point just like a somehow heavier leg press. I'm an elite level lifter for anyone who is wondering, I'm just an unknown in the lifting world. Hope this helps who ever reads this :)

    • @allylilith5605
      @allylilith5605 9 місяців тому

      with a block pull you dont truly get in the same position as your sticking point. ivan Makarov is probably the best example of a deadlift sticking point and his is trying since 4years to fix it with block pulls without visible progress. if anything he got even faster off the floor but still gets stuck despite block pulling 550kg through his sticking point

    • @bulletproof1581
      @bulletproof1581 9 місяців тому

      @@allylilith5605 Yes but he's not doing them correctly that's why :') you don't just pick a block pull of any height, so for instance if you've never had any issues locking out your deadlift, then doing really high block pulls and working on your lockout is a pointless choice of block pull, because you don't have an issue there that needs fixing. Ivan Makarov's sticking point specifically starts half way up his shin, and ends just above his knee, so he needs to do really low height block pulls, so he literally starts with the deadlift half way up his shin already, he pulls from there, and when the bar gets just above his knee he drops the bar. Block pulls have to be super super specific to the sticking point you have or they won't work much :P

    DAMN! I thought he had it. One thing though, Jamal probably does the hardest type of Sumo out of the top Sumo guys. He doesn’t put his feet anywhere near the plates which makes him have to pull the weight about a good 12-14 inches off the ground and makes it harder. Some of those other top guys will literally have there toes about half an inch from the plates which makes them only have to pull the weight about 2-3 feet inches off the ground and also makes it considerably easier.
