I remember reading in a guitar magazine in the 90's that Alex wanted to step away from Testament because he was sick of playing in E Minor. Never heard any of his non-Testament playing until now. This is phenomenal.
finally someone woke...i mean, i love rock and metal of course, but majority of bands, even if they have tons of talent at disposal they just stay with the classic minor metal vibe. I mean, experiment!
@@amonra9726 Yeah, like Animals as Leaders with different keys and fusiony parts. Sometimes I like traditional metal, but a lot of the time I like to listen to other stuff and more Fusiony modern stuff. This for sure is more fusiony playing and not traditional Jazz playing, but I do still like this.
this jazz take on a Metallica classic is fun, inventive, and intense as the original, despite no vocals. it shows respect and focuses on the musicians talent in a smaller group. got to hear more from Alex and this group.
Shows what an incredible, versatile & well-rounded musician Alex Skolnick is,that's the same guy who plays bonecrushing Thrash-Metal songs, like ''Practice what you preach'' or ''Native Blood'' with Testament.
when Criss Oliva died i was so sad and i still can't get rid of the feeling, but Alex plays excellent! but my friends told me he stopped playing metal and now plays jazz, so that was another big loss to me, but when i saw this video i'm happy to know that Alex plays both jazz and metal.
I am still mourning Chris Oliva's death. It is hard to describe how I can feel that loss for someone I never met. Alone you breathe really is hard to listen to without those emotions bubbling up and out thru every pore of my body.
Thanks guys and to all who work on that it was an amazing share it was music to my ears and food for my soul. I have been a Testament fan since I was 16 years old you do the math and only Alex has the humility to teach a Violoncellist how to head bang to Metallica. Dave is the only other guitarist with the speed but he is just not match for a teacher like Alex. I'm so proud of you. Alex you jazzy dude.
Dig Skol’s chord voicing! Drummer is crazy rad! Bassist - very cool. Saw them live once. Ended with War Pigs and Skol was nearly head banging. Wife was like “Dude knows he wants to full on rock out!” Shortly after, he’s back in Testament.
I can't help but thinking, that if Cliff Burton would live he would play the bass in this trio. The dude always had more in him musically than thrash, so quite possible he would had some similar trajectory as Alex's encounter with jazz. #RIPCLIFF
How do you and the drummer work with your loop? I havent found a drummer who could do that, even when his rhythm was used for the creation of the loop.
Holy shit sakes,, Did I hear this on the elevator going to the attorney office.. OMG , that is The Alex Skolnick Trio .. Everyone should pay attention to the THRASH master in class.. Something to appreciate ,, OMG so good!
I was not familiar with Mr. Skolnik until I saw the article about his guitars being stolen. He is clearly very talented, I enjoyed this and some of the Testament stuff I watched. Glad to read that he got his guitars back and that the criminal was caught. Don't mess with a man's instrument!
@orangeguitarmusik Inventiveness and experimentation = bad ... ? You may not agree with the interpretation but there is definitely inventiveness in what they do. Inventiveness and experimentation are at the heart of the spirit of jazz. If you cant sense humour that's your problem and not Alex's. He's clearly having fun combining his two favourite styles. And besides, his Bachelor of fine Arts in Jazz from The New School university certainly supports his claim the he is, in fact, a 'jazzer'.
At First i was like "omg this is amazing!" Then it started to wear off for me..... But by the end I was back to "holy shit this is incredible" Outstanding even if there were parts that I didn't think translated all that good, most of it did and it's an original twist to a classic cover. 4 1/2 stars out of 5

Alex's groove and lines wow...... Bass and Drummer are mindblowing!
He plays thrash, and also he plays jazz on thrash songs, seems like impossible.
This is not a trash song, it is good and i enjoy listening it. You are trash
@@floydmadlad6950 idiot. u cant read , yet u reply. he wrote "thrash"....
@@floydmadlad6950 "THRASH" you fucking idiot lmao

This really is fantastic. Every one of those guys is great.
I love when they use the 'One' turnovers
It's so beautiful
Once is a mistake, twice is jazz.

What a performance. Alex is awesome and omg his drummer is a beast. The whole band kicks ass.

I love the reminder on the delay pedal! Also a good example of playing with people on different levels. Handled it all very well.
I can describe in words how much I enjoy Alex Skolnick Trio work ... Beyond belief ...

sweep-plucked arpeggios on upright bass. Never thought I'd see that!

At least 20,000 of these views are from Lars trying to figure out the drum solo.

Wes Jourdan OMG!
NO KIDDING! I listened to this with my eyes closed and it almost sounded like Keith Moon playing, very 'effin' cool!
Did not expect to love this but I did.
Boxing is like jazz music, the place is packed but few people understand it - George Foremen

Completely agree!
Is it just me, or do they throw in a couple of licks from One by 'tallica towards the end?
Alex such a master
Great performance, cool atmo! :)
Listening to it during Covid quarantine: I think it's like a doping to cope with the disease!
that breathing technique of the drummer xaxaxa amazing
Masterpiece.
He should play his own Disciples of the Watch that way.
That bass is BOSS
+y2kcurran That's Nathan Peck! His debut album is coming out soon!

fue genio en el metal y lo es en el jazz me gustaría un disco con john zorn y stanley jordan
El baterista es una masa!! Grandes!
I loved this !!! Just one thing, for me the drumming is a bit loud on some parts of this song and take over the strings.
Killer drummer but he needed to sit back a bit more strings..
Master Alex Skolnick.
Good Job!

A Pat Metheny-esque adaption of this classic Metallica tune. Sounds great - I love this arrangement. Brilliant playing and drumming.
Yeah, really nice. I hear a lot of al di meola when he starts to pick up speed
This is awesome :D
Godlike
Wow! Classic Metallica song with that Skolnick jazz influence! Amazing!!!
Very nice. Like this better than the song itself.
Wow that's so cool
Alex's Al di Meola like Latin style is unique
I thought I was the only one who noticed the big Al 😃
Very good.
Excellent 👍😀
this is my kind of jazz! hahaha
WOW !!! 😎
Nice!
cool jam
Did he do a jazz version for any Testament's song? It would be cool
Yeah! They did "Practice What You Preach", under the title "Practica Lo Que Predicas"!
