Same. Jang's reviews are always better than most others because he often knows stuff about the source material or he'll research it if he's not familiar with it. With the reference images, we're able to see some of those comparisons in the review
Jang, you should always put the “independent review” or “unsponsored look” phrase in your titles. This is one of the reasons why your reviews are the BEST. And more people gotta know that
I don’t think he should. It just clutters up the title a lot more plus he mentions that at the beginning, which means more people notice and pay attention to it.
I'd have to agree. It'd help Jang stick out from the sea of LEGO sponsored reviews, even with how they're reviews that are months before the set releases.
He starts the game in a poncho and wears it on the box art. Definitely a key part of his outfit in fallen order. I always played without it, but still should definitely have been included
I couldn’t agree more. I am fine with having to go aftermarket to make my figs more screen accurate or have them just look cooler than with LEGO accessories, but not having BD is really disappointing.
@samuelradley1625 Not to mention that collecting ponchos is a non-trivial portion of the experience, to the point where they made it an even bigger deal in the next game XD
The double camera angle in the wrap up was great! Always appreciate the deep dives into the small set details in your reviews too Jang, I know you've been trying new things lately so wanted to give some feedback!
Now I'm not the most diehard Star Wars fan, but the proportions don't really look too bad, especially seeing it held by an actual person and not just going off of official product images.
The Empire had so many size classes for Star Destroyers, I just see this as one of their light cruiser variants. Would Vader be on one of those, not likely, but the ship itself is good. Seeing the little rotating point defense guns on the sides move make me want a Space Battleship Yamato kit. I too love the inclusion of reference pictures. I know it adds time to your edit to get the pics sourced and added in smoothly, but it really does demonstrate what you're talking about wonderfully, as do the additional camera angles. I love that LEGO has "swooshibility" as a common descriptor for the toys. There are lots of lines that could use it, but this is the only fandom I've seen that does. And seeing Jang actually swoosh it around with the big smile is delightful.
Even though the proportions are a bit off, it looks WAY better than previous versions, the details both inside and out are really good, and the minifigures are great too. Also I'm happy that I got the buildable BD-1 figure last Christmas so now him and Cal are on that set's display stand, with BD-1 in Cal's left hand. Edit: Now we need updated Venator and Resurgent playscale sets so then we get to have all 3 Star Destroyers from the Skywalker Saga.
The lack of BD-1 was weird but it wasn't glaring until Young Leia included L0-LA, proving that small companion droids count as accessories and not as separate minifigures. They won't do it, but it'd be cool if they put Kal and BD-1 together in a magazine gift pouch much like they've done with Rey and BB-8 and other minifig + droid packs. Of course, we don't really get those magazines and gifts in the USA, but I'd shell out $10 for that from a BrickLink seller. The ISD itself definitely looks great with the reduced gaps, but those weird proportions do stick out on some angles, especially lower to the ground ones where you see how big that stack area is compared to the base wedge. My only real concern with it as someone who hasn't bought a playscale Lego ISD before is how the ceiling looks when unfolded - if you can't close it up when you put minifigs on the bridge anyways, why not try to make the underside of those panels some usable play space? When it's laid out flat like that, all of those anti-studs feel crude during play, though at least it's consistently colored and isn't too distractingly messy. I guess it's not worth the set budget to do something about that when the exterior, the stability, and the intentional play spaces are the priority.
Fun fact: the imperial commander included in this set is the same who reported to Darth Vader about the escape pod which R2 and C-3PO escaped with the Death Star plans
ANother fantastic review Jang, keep up the great work. Really enjoy the additional camera angles you've added, gives a lot of perspective, which can be hard to convey.
This was a day 1 buy for me after a while of excitedly saving up. I was also a little weirded out by the proportions but I noticed them a lot less once I had it in hand. Despite the downscale it still has a commanding presence wherever I put it and I love that I don't need to allocate too much space for it :)
I wish it was a bit longer but if the length was compromised for the detail I am ok with it. The fact that is so sturdy and looks so good is an incredible achievement by the designers!
I was fully planning to buy this just for Cal Kestis lol. But seeing this review made me pretty excited for the whole build! You know, since childhood I wanted to have two and exactly two Star Wars ships in Lego form - the Millenium Falcon and a Star Destroyer. I guess this will be my version of one half of my childhood dream :)
It's avaliable for 150 where I live, which I feel is a reasonable price for something like this. Wished it had an extra fig and some more interior space, but it's the sleekest non-UCS model yet.
This is a great review Jang! I always appreciate your reviews on Lego and actually looked up whether you had a review for this set. I was on the fence about this set but you've helped me decide with great insight. I'm heading out to pick it up now!
Jang, I really appreciate that you have been talking about these newer sets relative to the previous version adjusted for inflation. It really has helped put these prices into a better perspective for me.
Thanks again for your detailed objective reviews. Although this is not a favorite model for me, I enjoy watching your clear eyed assessment. You are appreciated.
Thanks for reviewing that @jang. I've always wanted a Star Destroyer and this is tempting for the footprint. Love how much you can throw it around! A proper swooshable ship - although technically it's not a swooshing ship. Tempting...
I‘d only want this for the Cal minifigure but there‘s no way I‘d buy the entire set for him. Bricklink has got him up for insane prices right now, I hope they‘ll go down.
@@Tonioswelt the prices will probably stay that bad… you mines well buy the whole set if it’s too high, that’s what i do. Then sell the dudes i dont want eventually at bricks and minifigs or somewhere similar.
I was kind of expecting as much. It seems they took a lot of notes from the Imperial Light Cruiser set, which was also incredibly well-built and used very similar techniques for its frame construction. I really admire well-designed stuff like this more than how something looks, so I can forgive some proportion inconsistencies. I think this is definitely a "sleeper set" considering how much lack of enthusiasm there was for it when it was first announced. I currently have this, the dark falcon, and the xwing/tie mashup that I'll be building over the coming weeks, so it looks like I won't be disappointed!
I like it, its well designed. The proportions on the top i feel arent as off as it looks, its probably only maybe 3 or 4 studs reduced on the upper portion to make it look proper
It's nice hearing a positive but balanced perspective on Lego star wars. A lot of reviewers have been quite negative over the last few years, unjustifiably so I think. Keep up the great work.
I definitely see what you mean about the proportions, but overall it looks pretty decent to me. I do have the 2014 version, but I'm really considering picking this one up. I really appreciate the honest reviews man.
I love the bit where you're talking about the engines and are like "Some aren't glowing" and then show brief clips from the film that indicate it's accurate lol. Lego does get some things wrong, but it's also good that you're fair and point out when you or other people are mistaken on particular details.
That sounds like a good challenge, you might need more than two. I was thinking that the proportions are probably due to the available angles of the wedge plates, and how tightly everything comes together, with such a thin internal frame as well. The combination of existing LEGO proportions, and the build techniques involved, determines the overall length. Making it longer would change the way all the angles come together, and would increase the part count while probably reducing the strength of the model. It seems like the right compromises were made to produce the best overall product.
It’s a play set and not a scale model so the proportions reflect that given the price point and the playability that this model gives so I think it’s acceptable; plus it makes it more swooshable. Good review, thx.
Y'know, to lean into LEGO being LEGO, with the proportions of this set, you can easily mod the set to be a Procursator Class SD. Essentially a slightly smaller, tighter, hunchbacked ISD.
I absolutely love this. Definitely grabbing a couple, but I am legitimately confused why they give us one of each essential members of the ship's crew and troop compliment, when two of any of them would be better. For authenticity sake they could have a lot more crew and officers, for playsake getting rid of the gunner and technician for more stormtroopers would make a lot more sense. Idk, minifigs are not bad but confusing to me, but the ship itself is awesome
Looks like Lego based the design of the Cal Kestis figure on concept art, bcause his legs are blue in the game. Not a huge deal but it's a little strange since the game has been out for almost 5 years
Yes inflation is a real thing, but adjusting the price to inflation and saying it's not more expensive than 2014 is not really fair. The thing we have to realize is that, adjusted to inflation a lot of people actually earn less now than in 2014. But price aside, it's a great play set. For display I think the flat bottom is a bigger issue than the scale. Thanks for another great review!
I don't mind the slightly different proportions. If it makes the model look a bit more cartoony, that's a good thing in my eye due to personal taste. And minfigures are already super cartoony, so I say it fits nicely.
Definitely wish this also came with BD-1, but overall I think the set is great. I had the 2006 model and it constantly fell apart and was very fragile. When they announced this I sold that to put towards this new one, and I’m pleasantly surprised at how sturdy this one is!
I thought this was a midi scale set based on early images. But it really seems larger in hand and looks pretty sweet too. And I have even come to prefer the smaller, more compact size. I'm definitely getting one, the moment I find one for a substantial discount. And if not, I'm happy with my 2006 set.
Huh wow impressive, it almost feels a little empty cause of added space inside but in a good way heh also appreciate the added footage for reference like with the desert skiff set
I didn’t even notice any problems with the proportions. Maybe if I had an actual model or toy of the Star Destroyer it would bother me but this play scale version looks pretty good. Wonder if at some point they can just remove the handle and move the bridge back a few more studs to give it more space.
This set looks better than expected, only a couple of minor issues that I saw really, the pros really outweigh the cons. The only thing really missing on the inside is some sort of Jail Cell, you can't have a bad guy ship without a prison to lock up the good guys, but overall, this one is going on the list for sure.
Love the continued use of reference images!

And more people gotta know that
Tittles are already very long, there's no space.
I mean, he does?
He does
I don’t think he should. It just clutters up the title a lot more plus he mentions that at the beginning, which means more people notice and pay attention to it.
I'd have to agree. It'd help Jang stick out from the sea of LEGO sponsored reviews, even with how they're reviews that are months before the set releases.
Extremely funny to hear Jang use the word "copium"
Love your recent use of reference images/videos. Not only does it helps with clarity, but the review also flow better
Very nostalgic, 10 years ago I’d watch your reviews of the 2014 Star Destroyer every day until I got it for Christmas, I was SO excited
I built this yesterday and it’s a really good solid build. For me I don’t have an original trilogy destroyer so it was a must buy.
You going to display it?
@@ryz8 I’m thinking about hanging it from the ceiling!
I can understand Cal not having a poncho because the poncho is an add on in the game and not his default look, but not including BD is baffling to me
He starts the game in a poncho and wears it on the box art. Definitely a key part of his outfit in fallen order. I always played without it, but still should definitely have been included
Yeah the BD1 mold exists from his set. So how much would that really cost to add to the set. It's one more piece.
I couldn’t agree more. I am fine with having to go aftermarket to make my figs more screen accurate or have them just look cooler than with LEGO accessories, but not having BD is really disappointing.
I'd argue that it's not an add on. You spend the whole intro in the poncho and he only takes it off once you reach bogano.
@samuelradley1625 Not to mention that collecting ponchos is a non-trivial portion of the experience, to the point where they made it an even bigger deal in the next game XD
I would’ve liked a Grand Moff Tarkin included. My 2008 one is quite dated now.
Didn't we get one with the 2016 Death Star?
Just what I needed! have had this in my amazon cart since the first of august. thanks for the insight jang, take it easy.
You are entirely too kind! Thank you so, so much for the extra support!

Yeah same here. I'm a fan but not a diehard one. The proportions are good enough for me to not notice any issues
Jang is finally here with the only review of this set that matters
The Empire had so many size classes for Star Destroyers, I just see this as one of their light cruiser variants. Would Vader be on one of those, not likely, but the ship itself is good.

This always happens. When a set is new the prices of desirable characters are way up and will eventually come down after a while.
It probably will. This is a pretty desirable set for OT fans and I can see them selling off Cal to offset the price
Ok glad to hear the proportions are a bit better in person.
It feels like a mix between ucs and playset. The (almost) perfect star destroyer.
If Lego had made a new mold for BD-1 that you could attach to Cal’s back, that would’ve been crazy
I love when Jang loves a Lego set. Thank you!
Looks EPIC set the force is strong with this one awseome review jang 👍
This was missing one thing and one thing only: a Palpatine hologram
The 2000s version of this was my first big set, and it would crumble and burst into pieces very regularly, so it's cool to see it come on.
You've created a new must-have in my brain! Ha ha! Thank you for that and for all your amazing reviews. I like them all a lot❣️
Collected Lego my entire life. Missed out on every Star destroyer and as a result I stopped caring about them. I really want this one now
I love how we see navy (and army once iirc) troopers rather than just stormtroopers. Makes things feel more detailed

Definitely on my wish list
Yeah Cal should include BD-1. They already did it. Don't understand why they didn't include him, now he is quite expansive.
It would be so cool if one day we get actual fallen order/survivor sets then we can get a better cal with all the fixings
I will surely pick it up later to go with the small scale Super star destroyer. For the moment, I went with the Milano :)
Somehow this seems to have a great design and price! I really want to get this one.

Smallest yet probably my favorite!
I'm working on this right now. I only wish they included a stand.
Sweet set!
Ah yes, the Mouse Droid set that happens to come with a grey Dorito (all hail Mouse)
great review thanks jang, new sub here
Big fan of the shirt.
I like the Cal Kestis additional fig I think it's the only 25th anniversary figure that somewhat fits in with the set
Looks amazing ❤
I already have the UCS version so I don't really want a play scale version, but this looks really good and I also like the minifigures
I don't think the price is too bad actually. The build is clearly well designed and very polished.
Really wish Jang hadn't mention the Family Guy Stormtroopers. I can't unsee it
Personally i love the proportions, so I'm glad this is the first star destroyer I've bought

The only thing really missing on the inside is some sort of Jail Cell, you can't have a bad guy ship without a prison to lock up the good guys, but overall, this one is going on the list for sure.
The top part doesn’t need to be so built up IMO and the turrets are too big but they need to be that large for play.
Lego Cal Kestis let's go!
Its a wonderful model, but it hurts to see them get smaller and smaller as time goes by. Would love to see this in 6211 size.
