      We REALLY need better education for everyone that teaches how to think rationally, critically, and to ALWAYS question things. Plus, free healthcare or at bare minimum, free mental health! We are overrun with uneducated, gullible folks and are in crisis over people having access to mental health WITHOUT stigma of seeking help! Mental health should be promoted and shown for the positive process it is...it's NOT a weakness!
      And even more, we MUST REMOVE ALL of the divisive, lying propagandized media ONLY out to get ratings, the corrupt politicians and corporations that buy them off and then are beholden to those corps to do their biddings. The whole system is FUBAR!😫
      I truly AM afraid at this point for our Country and its people. Feeling pretty hopeless and helpless at this point. 😔

      So, I usually just try fact check them...
      Like how they keep mentioning Democrat are all Pedophiles...
      Well ; 15 Republicans were arrested for pedophilia who held office from 2015-2020 .. Including Nader, an advisor and close friend of Trump, for trying to uber a 13 year old boy from another country...
      This one is great... Theres a Dr , who they call respectable source of vaccine information... Dr. Baker the Chiropractor...LOL.
      Who said that people who recieved the vaccine go through shedding..
      Well, any women/girls around that person would be affected.. Causing abnormal menstrual cycle and or birth defect... Mind you, this is coming from a Chiropractor.. Same level if Dr. Dre ever gives medical advice..
      I don't try to convince them... It just doesn't work. I try to fact check them. But, if that doesn't work..... lol.
      I do end up trolling them instead.. Cause it makes more sense to make fun of their science fiction "facts"..😭

      @@geoben1810 As a foreigner, I’d suggest that the first thing that should be done is push your representatives to stand up to this, which they aren’t doing enough or at all? Why immediately resort to violent means when you just have a bunch of politicians, military and enablers (Sidney Powell or Tucker Carlson, for instance) who should be called out and held accountable, but really accountable?
      The democrats should call out all those Republicans in the Houses for enabling and supporting Trump and all those still pushing the lie of a stolen election and wishing to reinstate the former guy. The Dems are much too soft.
      Someone like Michael Flynn should be arrested by the FBI for inciting a military coup and so should Gaetz and Greene for inciting a civil war. I’d say enough is enough, but not necessarily by taking up arms.

We have a 2022 election coming up. This is where we everyone needs to go out and vote these fools out of power.       Manifest Destiny. The late 18th-century notion that the United States is blessed by God certainly went far in justifying the enslavement of African people and the genocide of Indigenous groups. But, it required rejection of critical thinking, a liberal and free education and a hefty dose of entitlement (hi, God). This is what we are seeing in Republican states as they attempt to censor critical race theory and social justice studies, a cult of ignorance.

    I live in a democracy. I don’t consider the US to be a democracy. A democracy has systems that ensure that all eligible people are given every opportunity to vote.. The US has never done this. Now one major party openly opposes this concept. In a democracy this party would have no possibility of being elected to govern. Again, not the case in the US.

Most Americans understand, accept, and appreciate that the enduring strength of America is that we are a nation of immigrants and multiculturalism, a "melting pot" where the best ideas rise to the top, and superficial differences are meaningless in the face of our common humanity and purpose. Most Americans want competent leaders who speak truth, who strive to unite, who are not corrupt, who care about them. So, it should come as no surprise that President Biden is already receiving high marks from the public, while Toxic Trump never managed to rise above even a 50% approval rating.       There is no doubt about majoritarian support for liberal democracy in the long-term. The profound risk is sufficient support in the medium term for institutional capture that leads to institutional failure. By capturing the media, courts, legislatures, executive, universities, administrative and defence architecture etc, and either undermining their role as beachhead or inverting their function to subvert, distort, diminish, or denying democratic practice they amplify and extend their reach while limiting opponents. The weakness is that so much relies on norms that are fragile, as people can be swayed when vulnerable. Whatever moves might be made against democracy, don’t look away, don’t assume it’s an exception, call it what it is, always defend those weaker and different from yourself, don’t give an inch, don’t be afraid, and don’t forget you always have an army of regular people behind you who will never give up.

    As someone who lives outside the United States, what glaringly lacks is a social programming. If America truly wants to squish the radical appeal, it really needs to introduce universal health Care, affordable medications, strong and affordable education etc etc... Otherwise a 'me first' societal social contract will thrive which in itself is very vulnerable to nationalistic and authoritarian appeals...

    Correct. We need the U.S. and it is failing us. The EU, plus their regional partners, is not perfect (breaking away one member allows to veto almost everything important and Russia has Orban, parts of Poland's government are insane [not as much as the U.S. but...]) and therefore can not defend modern democracy alone (all others are to small to stand alone for sure).

    Watching from Canada and without a cable TV subscription, this is where I get my U.S. news. On my very first day of Grade 1, I'm sure my grandfather didn't expect me to stand up when the teacher asked if there were any questions and I nervously asked if she'd be teaching about Fascism in Grade 1. When she doubled over with laughter, I doubted I had done a smart thing, but she quickly regained her composure saying that my question was the best she'd ever been asked. "There is hope for civilization." After hearing of my escapade, my grandfather couldn't stop smiling for a week, even in his sleep. He always said it could happen here, just as it happened when he was driven from his family farm near Odessa, ending up on a wheat farm near Eatonia Saskatchewan.

      Actually, no. We've always been accutely aware of our short-comings. It has always been those on the outside who want more than anything to be American that create and perpetuate the myths. And compared to the places they flee, America IS that mythical place. Don't judge our people by the actions of our politicians. Most of us are just trying to live full, rich, and rewarding lives. Unfortunately, not enough of us have resisted the pull into self-interested isolationism and exploitation. Most of us don't buy into the meritocratic propaganda and recognize the gross hypocrisy of our system. But you know what? We weren't always this way and we will not remain so. The oligarchs cannot continue to rule in the absence of a willing population. The uneducated and easily indoctrinated make up the pool of voters rallying behind the autocratic, nationalist cult of personality. Eventually, they'll Darwin out of the game and we'll be back on solid ground. Patience. Democracy will prevail.

    The US has never been a great model for democracy. Your electoral system makes sure of that. But the behaviour of American policies for years has always had been steered by a moral compass. But that is no longer the case. Corporate donations are no longer a crime. Legalised bribery.

      The electoral college makes a lot more sense when you look at the U.S. as a united "federation" of small independent states. I'm not arguing whether that's a better or worse way to run the country, but the reality is that the federal government is more powerful than ever which enables the nation to compete more effectively at a global level. And while I disagree with the Citizens United argument that money = free speech, the unfortunate reality is that there will always be illicit "dark money" especially with the evolution of new technology and cryptocurrency.

    I've been alive and paying attention to the world since the beginning of the 70s. Any American who thought the US has been a "model for democracy" during that period must have been ignorant of how the other developed democracies worked.

    Fact of the matter is, democracy never was necessarily the most desired or stable form of government in any given society. I don’t think enough Americans understand this. There’s a reason why monarchies lasted for centuries but most democracies are relatively recent, and many were short lived. The US had been more of an exception in history than the rule. The Greeks and Romans are considered to be the great forefathers of democracy, but even they fell back into having emperors before long.

    I don't think one can understand the development of authoritarianism in the U.S. during the last 30 years without taking a good hard look at authoritarianism in the U.S. BEFORE that. To my mind, it's always been more or less the same - see Joseph McCarthy, Richard Nixon ad nauseam - the media have only made it more evident.

    Most of the problems could be solved if you get american youth to take school serious again. Maybe as adults they will be able to understand how science works, how you recognize it that you might be wrong or how they can easily debunk weird stuff on the net and not follow it blindly.
    And most important of all, they would be able to recognize it, if a child comes completely unprepared for each test and tries to slip through it by being extremely vague, while bullying everyone who might expose its complete lack of knowledge... around a third of the US is already not able to do so.

May disagree with conservative ideology and with their stances on many issues, but do value and respect LOYAL opposition--a duty that the GOP has for too long forgotten and abdicated, putting personal and party interests before country. That is not only harmful to their party, it is harmful to our democracy and institutions. And it has come to represent a clear a present danger to our nation, a serious threat to our very security.
    All of this is mentioned because it is firmly believed that this is not a time for diplomatic, soft-spoken words. This is not a time to be timid or Pollyannaish about our current political landscape, but a time for frankness, a time for acknowledgment of defects, a time for courageously confronting stark unpleasant realities. Just as we don't forget Pearl Harbor, or 9/11, even more so the attack against our nation's Capitol on January 6, 2021 by fascist Reich-wing domestic terrorists incited to insurrection by a deranged President against his own government must never be forgotten or forgiven.
    Thus, we MUST condemn both cowardly, corrupt Republican so-called "leaders" defying truth, justice, duty, democracy, and Constitution--and their dysfunctional political party that behaves as a cult--in the strongest possible terms, using the most muscular language that can be mustered. For it is necessary; the very fate of our nation depends upon it. Disaster was narrowly averted with the defeat of Trump, with Democratic control of the House and Senate, but the battle for the soul of this nation is far from over, and we must never again allow ourselves to become complacent. And so it is vitally imperative that we remind each other of this, that we impress these things upon our children and fellow citizens of this nation.

Our industry, inventions, and innovations absolutely exploded in the late 1800s and shocked the entire world--it's somehow managed to continue well into the present.     Great conversation and very important. America is an ideal, a dream. We must understand and appreciate how amazingly beautiful freedom truly is and protect it. Only when we view something as valuable will people sacrifice for it. Everyone has value and something to contribute. Diversity is a beautiful thing. I never thought it could happen in American. We had become self-centered, ungrateful and greedy..the pandemic fixed that.

    The problem stems from BOTH parties being so pompously sure that THEY are correct 🙄 Think I'm wrong?
    Ask yourself how sure you are that YOUR party is the correct one...its literally like Religion all over again...

    Maybe democracy has too many flaws, but it's better than some of the other choices being forced on us. We need to repair what is broken.

    Reminds me of a verse from the wonderful Gil Scott-Heron song Winter in America (very prophetic) from 40+ years ago where he sings "Ain't nobody fighting cause nobody knows what to save." That's us lovers of democracy. In the words of a lamentation from James Baldwin it's "moral apathy and death of the heart." Our media would easily agree to be state run if the price was high enough. We've already seen federal judges who will do anything for the powerful. We have too many politicians who lack imagination or are too stuck in the privileges of the system to fight for its health. And too many of our people in the words of Liz Berrigan "have been cowed, bowed, bought off, distracted, and become willing participants in their own extinction." If the WWII generation was the greatest, then what are we? Where are our leaders who are willing to sacrifice it all for something bigger than themselves? Where our are people who will stop being afraid when the time comes to fight for our democracy? I fear we good people are going to go down with a wimper, not a bang. Winter in America indeed.

    As with any other existing government style ; Democracy will wake up when challenged and its existence proves its is successful as any other form of representation if not better ! Choice of the mass is a voice.

    He is quite right. The perceived strengths of authoritarianism is actually is weaknesses: its inflexibility, so it is inadaptable. its exclusivity, so it can't readily form coalitions. its perfectionism, so more and more things are considered "corruption" by the authoritarian regime itself. (basically they try to make a society so "perfect", it's unliveable even to the people creating it.)

    I hate to point this out, but Americans need to refresh the memories of the 20th Century. During the decades of the 50s, 60,s to the late 80, The United States enthusiastically supported, financed and armed authoritarian regimes in Latin America, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile; South-east Asia, Iran, Philippines , Indonesia. . . With the silent complicity or some times enthusiastic support of the Democratic Party.
    The rhetoric then may sound familiar now: Defending the home land from the threat of Socialism, The exclusive nationalism, the fear of the "others". The methods were similar, not accepting elections unless they went "our way", economic sabotage of any country that refused to comply. The true motivation was to advance the geopolitical and economic advantages of the US empire.
    What we see now is Karma, coming home to roost.

    When a State govner in USA invites a million economic migrants over the border, to travel wherever they want within the USA, as Merkel did in Europe in 2015, settling in any state they want to, then you can compare Hungary to Trump.

He is a critically important light in this dark time, and he has suffered far too much for the principles which the West pretends to hold dear.     It seems that in order to defeat authoritarian rule, we have to be authoritarian. The trick is figuring out how to tell which brand of it is better for us as a culture and a species.

    Less than 30 years ago the Soviet Union collapsed in December of 1991. December of this year will mark it's 30th anniversary. Can the USA please hold on for at least a few more months, I really don't like weird numbers like 29, gives me shivers just thinking about it.

    The people’s struggles to retain or regain their democracy in Hong Kong, Myanmar and Belarus, to name just 3, were brutally suppressed while the powerful democracies did nothing. If the US, EU, UK and commonwealth countries could get it together and agree to send observers, levy sanctions and even send in peacekeepers, some of those people’s movements might have succeeded. To paraphrase, first they came for your democracy but we did nothing; now they’re coming for our democracy and there’s no one left to ask for help.

    Over here in Germany, we have managed to create somewhat of a counter-model to this worldwide divisive trend: the two largest political parties - mid left and mid right - have been in several instances of "Grand Coalition" over many years, and given the challenges of CV-19, they have shown this model to actually work and produce results
