- I finally got to plant my Fuerte avocado tree! Many don't realize that you can plant cold-hardy varieties such as the Fuerte and Mexicola pretty far North in California, as this tree can withstand temperature as low as 26 - 27 degrees Fahrenheit for limited periods of time. In this video, I talk about planting techniques, dirt, spacing, and bracing. Hope you enjoy!

I have since learned that planting in a square hole has benefits over a circle hole in clay soil. There are some good videos out there explaining why, but essentially it prevents roots from getting stuck and growing in a circle.
Looking good! You can also mix in the clay with the citrus/cactus mix so that the roots release into the native soil. Once it is in the native the tree will really thrive.
Thank you, it’s taken off pretty well so far this summer! 🥑🥑
Where they grow im Guatemala it is mostly clay.
@@growyourownavocados thank you. This is a Mexican variety which is why it can withstand colder temperatures
@mikesoutside I have one too. I also have a Lamorinda grafted onto it which is a local variety which tastes very similar but also thrives in cold weather. Fuerte is probably my favorite but I haven't tried every variety yet.
@@growyourownavocados very nice!! Never even heard of Lamorinda, amazing how many varieties there are
How cold it gets there?
It gets down into the high twenties usually in the middle of winter at night
You made a huge mistake. You need to plant that avocado tree on a little mound so the water rolls off instead of running into that hole. Because that water can accumulate inside that hole with surrounding clay and you'll drown your roots if enough water gets in.
Thanks for the comment, the mounding I used seemed to work just fine. Tree is thriving after two years! 😊🌴
