  • Two-stage turbocharging makes the MAN 18V48/60TS the most efficient four-stroke diesel engine in the world. Opposite to a biturbo, the system comprises two sequential turbochargers which deliver a sound boost in charge air pressure to increase power output and lower fuel consumption and emissions. In this animation, the working principle of the 2-stage serially arranged turbochargers and their effect on the 4-stroke power unit is explained.

    Eine zweistufige Turboaufladung macht den MAN 18V48/60TS zum effizientesten Viertakt-Dieselmotor der Welt. Anders als ein Biturbo besteht das System aus zwei sequenziell geschalteten Turboladern. Deren hoher Ladedruck bewirkt nicht nur eine Leistungssteigerung, sondern verringert auch Kraftstoffverbrauch und Emissionen.     Ok,but the second charger stage may be bigger than the first charger,because the energy of the exhaust is lower, then the system in correct..But this system is applied to high power engines ,no for small engines,,,except diesel engines upgraded.

    how does NOx emission reduces with the use of a 2-stage turbo charger. is it because more air is getting inside the cylinders? the mixture becomes more lean? if not can someone explain please?

    if the pressure is incresed also the engine must be more durable so it means more cost due to expensive parts.Also there is a problem that if the turbochargers get damaged it will be longer to put them off service

    1200KW PER CYLINDER?! what's the displacement?

      108.6 litres, or 6627 cubic inches. Per cylinder. So a total displacement of around 119286 cubic inches. Max output is 21600 kw or almost 29000 hp at 514 rpm.

      @@ZeroneAngel To put that in perspective, an otherwise similar engine for use in railway locomotives might have about 20 litres displacement per cylinder, and run up to 850rpm.

    MAN’s claim “the world most efficient Diesel engine” is false, Man could have added “to date” to their claim back 5-10 years ago, today there is a better technology that is “ the most efficient Diesel engine to date, today”, I challenge MAN’s claim, I hope Man takes me up on the offer, they will be surprised. I hear MAN is a reputable German company. Looking forward to speak to MAN, drop me a line thanks.

    2 single chargers - two points that will stop the whole engine when failing. Guess you better have 2 of these engines in your ship. Website of the description does not exist, www.man.eu has no error page. At least in the internet man hasnt reached the top yet.

      I'm taking a cruise on the Norwegian Encore and it has 5 engines. They also want $129 to see them so UA-cam it is. They are impressive but not worth $129 for a tour and the tour is sold out 2 months before sailing!
