I have the Don mare 2324 had it in my drawer waiting for the right telecaster to put it in…dam that gets the Nancy pinch harmonics transistor sound it’s phenomenal..I put it in a Nash 52 …I have to post some of the classic tone …
Great job! Glad you really liked the Don Mare 2324 and it went on to a good home. One thing I noticed when I had it was the pickup had the amazing attriubute of making all the amps it went through sound like the amps had a vintage celestion blue in it. I could here it on your video to in the shimmering upper harmonic overtones!
Alright, that was a bit odd, insomuch that your analysis at the end perfectly mirrored my own impression. Quite obvious why the Barn Burner is a fav, but that 6k w/ the HPF, oh yeah baby! I simply love the mids from it.
I loved all three settings, but you were absolutely right when you said that the thinnest setting sounded a bit more like the Nancy sound. Unfortunately I never knew about this pickup. I’ve been searching for that Nancy sound for ages. I always thought there was something microphonic going on, but I know nothing about pickups. I bought a 50’s style Telecaster last year and I swapped the original bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Broadcaster pickup. Sounds pretty good, but it’s still not THAT sound. Then again, I realize I don’t have the perfect amp for that sound and, probably more important, I don’t really play very much like him. O well…, it’s always a joy to experiment with sound. 😊 Thanks for the video. I love what you’re doing! ❤
The Don Mare pickup is wonderful, but to be honest, wiring the high-pass capacitor in series onto any vintage-spec blackguard-style pickup would get you very close to the Pos. 2 sound in this video. :-) I used a fancy NOS Sprague one for mine, but you can pick up ceramic capacitors for tiny amounts of money.....always fun to experiment. :-) Can always upgrade the cap if you like the sound & want to splash out!
my first time on your channel and i was really impressed with everything in this video , and i learned a lot . great great job . as far as his sound man its hard to say his tone is unlike anything i have ever heard . i would almost suggest have you tried putting the amp on a metal folding chair with the speaker facing the back support ? lol. sorry to kid but i have no idea how he got that tone . your guitars sounded great , i thought the 4 k was low and thin sounding , where roys tone was reedy . your butterscotch paint job looks nice !
Joe you look healthy 🥳🤗. Great demo as usual. I guess something similar happened to Van Halen’s #1 pickup. It reads zero! It’s funny that it can function at all. I wind my own and I’d be curious to know how Don Mare does these Nancy pickups. Just when I think I understand electromagnetism I realize I really don’t. This makes me want to try tapping a tele bridge as I love esquires. I tend to prefer A3 and with 43 wire between 10 -11k ohms and with 42 wire between 7.8 and 8.5k Ohms.
Brilliant. That wiring setup you did is just brilliant. Love the sounds and variety that this gives all from a single pickup Esquire. I'd love to hear these with the tone knob rolled back to maybe 6 or 7, or even right through the tone knob range. I also wonder what it would sound like with a more traditional 3 barrel brass bridge setup. Maybe a little more initial bite and transient, and a longer bloom?
Not sure what the Gotoh saddles are (I assume steel, but might be nickel coated brass?) but the Ron Kirn at the end of the video has a traditional Glendale CRS ashtray with brass barrels and the two guitars sounded remarkably similar....so I don't think it'd make a colossal difference.
Actually I watched tone tests first. So I didn't know what 4k 6k 6k+HPF are. And I prefer 4k. So, I went back to Nancy mystique. Now I understand what's goin on. Quite interesting story. If I would get these pickups, I will do Neck; Neck and Bridge 6k; Bridge 4k.
I think because it's going through a vox style amp vice fender more than anything.... I want to hear this through a vibrolux. Seems like it would be close actually.
That sounds excellent. I personally think it sounds better than I've ever heard the barnbuster sound on your channel

impressed by the 6k+HBF sound for sure. cool stuff.
OC Duff makes 53 Nancy Pickups still and they are very good.

Can we officially call that Esquire the "BananaTele"?
Anyway, i like that low cut setting. It really works well with gain.
Bananacaster! ;-)
@@JoePerkinsMusic You could have the Barnbuster and the Bananbuster!
That middle position (with the hi-pass) - when cranked - sounds properly great Joe. Clangy in all the right places.
Players always trying to get those sounds at bedroom volume
Players like Roy always cranked it
This was recorded through a cranked 30W Dr Z Z-Master - no bedroom volume here.

@@JoePerkinsMusic : Thanks for the advice! I might just do that, thanks! 😃👍
It has also been said that Danny Gatton tinkered around with Roy’s Guitar!

That Z master sounds amazing!!!
It always does :P

Would like to have seen you using one of those new wireless guitar picks and running into a second amp playing in stereo.
I like the Don Mare 2324. It's a shame that it's so rare.
I may try that HPF mod on a guitar that I have where the neck pickup is a bit too dark.
all very well, but it couldn't sound less like RB.
