How 'Acadie' didn't become a worldwide hit is beyond me , even to this day. The man is amazing. I've put songs from the album in playlists - played to family and friends stretching back many years - and invariably they always ask, "who sang that song?"
Well this song just about says it all...Anglophone dad, francophone mom growing up in the mixed up lower class of Montreal in the 60's/70's ...we had diverse music, family, church on Sundays, Duddy Kravitz, Gentle Ben, Magic Tom, NDG, Les Automatistes, Beliveau, CRAZY, Les Expos, Metis, Robbie Robertson, Cohen, EXPO, morning radio and many many more deeply moving and soulful influences and music was always such a big part...the best place to grow up!! Merci, Daniel - across the great divide, we are one love in the eyes of the Maker
I had this played at my son Christopher gray funeral .He walked into Iraq Afghanistan for us whole came out closed casket . My handsome son had no head for me to kiss good bye. God bless u son.
tallfloyd is this a "TWO SHAY" moment...? I never know ........this is a beautiful song - maybe he meant the top 100 in the universe....I would put it on there.....
Yeah, my Dad (God Rest Him) was a hard one, but I thank him nearly every day for doing the hard work it takes to raise respectful kids. As a deep southerner, this entire soundtrack, not to mention the film itself, really hit home for me.
This song is a jem when I came to know Jesus Christ I heard this song at the end of the movie sling blade and I did research about Daniel he was a sound producer of bands like U2 and he was a great musical and it's about how he came off drugs and found God I have been sober for 9 years I used the be a dead head and Jerry Garcia band played it all the time and I never made the connection
Daniel Lanois's music has a nameless quality that is both ethereal yet earthly, gentle yet bold, local and universal. "The Maker" untangles in me a flow of images that bring up deep love, as I hear the story of love between Jesus and John The Baptist walking to the man with arms open ready to surrender to what is. I am not a Christian, but that nameless quality in Lanois's music and the lyrics of this song leave me longing for that kind of limitless bond with another human heart, as my heart awakens from its dangerous, unconscious sleep.
Me too! I found it through looking at Daniel Lanois songs though. Three other really good songs by him are Shine, That's the Way It Is, and Table Top (Table Top has no lyrics, but it sounds nice)
We played this song at my mom's veiwing when she passed away. She loved this song. It's been four years next Tuesday, since she has been gone this song always makes me think of her.
Wow to finish the day finding this , after a clear message delivered to me personally after a prayer. Thats no coincidence, the mighty name of Jesus answered imediately.
This is probably the only song I've ever felt a true emotional connection to. It is like my whole life culminated in a single song. Amazing lyrics and awesome vocals. I've listened to this song over and over 20 times. Thanks for sharing it.
He did the world such a service by letting Emmylou Harris find value in her inner songwriter, and find a new path in music, with those two albums, but also such a gift he gives himself and us with his own music.
I'm a HUGE DMB fan. Dave's cover of this song is my favorite of all of Dave's songs. That said, this has a beauty and sharpness that hits me harder than any of Dave's versions ever have. I FEEL his pain. I feel his confusion. I feel that he's off his path. I feel his disconnect with Source. I feel that he's searching for all of that. Beautiful song. Simply stunning.
Mam, I too love Dave's version of this song and have seen him sing it several times. This original is top notch and may I say with all respect, Jesus is the literal embodiment of the source, Almight God the Father. It took me decades of wondering on my own to finally recognize this and I would never go back. Peace and blessings upon you and yours.
In my opinion, this is one of the most wonderful songs ever written ... In fact, the word "wonderful" is not enough. It is beyond words, beyond this world ... I love it with my whole being and it has meant so much to me! ... Thank you!!!! Love from Nenne in Sweden
I had a Saturday morning show on WMUL FM 81 at Marshall University back in the 80s. This song was on my constant rotation. Beautiful song.. especially when Aaron Neville comes in as the voice of God. True art.
I've been listening to this song for the last few years I sent it to my daughter this morning she is drug addict, feeling lost confused on how to get out of her addiction. She text me this afternoon and said she's going to rehab. I believe this song touched her heart to make her want to go that is why I sent it. God answers prayers 🙏
I saw Daniel Lanois interviewed shortly after Acadie came out in 1989. I ran out and bought it and never regretted the purchase. It's a fabulous album.
I like a lot of newer music but this was just a classic, gospel lyrics , in a folky rock soundtrack, what an artist and producer. Acadie still played at my cottage every summer and it touches so many people so deeply
I would like for this song to be played at my funeral. Fell in love with the entire soundtrack since I saw the movie Slingblade. I still play the CD in my car.
If I was to take my life this may make things easier as gross as this is to say.....i am even sorry I said it..yet it offers me hope in dark times. I wonder if that hope was not enough. would this play in the background? Shame on me for my lack of consideration...though this song makes me sad as well.....
I first heard this song in 1992 when I decided to quit my job of 10years and sail to the Carribean with a friend, his wife and 4yearold daughter. He played it on the boat often,I fell in love with it immediately and have enjoyed the album still to this day.Such spiritually moving music, especially on the water.
I have recently become a Daniel Lanois fan and primarily because of the song, "The Maker", closing music from Slingblade! I hope others enjoy the spirit, soul and funk of this grand composition!
Top of the morning to you . I Cherish this song. In fact I listen to it on a daily basis. THE Maker , song makes me feel so humble. This song is so heart felt. It really melt my heart. This song is Priceless , one would have to ponder on the lyrics to get a true feeling about the message. God bless you for the update. I made comments on The Maker long long time ago. Amazingly said. One should not forget the roots of things, people should never forget where they come from. This principle aplies also in music. I agree with you my friend.
as in many times before I have missed the original version heard a cover, in this case Dave Matthews - loved it, went back found Daniel Lanois - love it more - end story - one of the most beautiful and meaningful songs I have ever heard - I love to listen and to cover it - it is truly a masterpiece and brings me closer to the maker.

This is such a beautiful song but at the same time, makes me very sad...I still listen again and again because the pain feels so good. I found this song through the movie Sling blade which made me reflect my attitude with my family. Thank you very much for this song Mr. Daniel Lanois.

Reminds me of a Van Morrison tune!
I agree..brilliant producer..songwriter...musician!!
No need to say anything. What he has done speaks for itself. A virtuoso musical genius.
I find myself waiting for the end of the movie just so I can hear this song.
This is a wonderful song !!! It's about redemption. I know that scares a lot of people...sad..😢

Always love hearing Dave Matthews Band playing this
I remember playing this on my acoustic to a packed Catholic church. This man inspired me to get a degree in recording music. He has the Midas touch.
This song reminds me of my dad who had hard childhood but in turn was the best father anyone could have ever had. I miss him right now.
