⏩ Video Question: Which member of Nightwish would you like to have a chat with the most?
For live content catch me on Twitch. www.twitch.tv/drumrolltony
Probably Emppu, the guy is hilarious... You should react to Weak Fantasy from Tampere show... No regrets...
I’d love to chat to Kai, the current drummer 🥁 We live in the same relatively small city so there’s always a chance of bumping into him somewhere 😅
Let me think lol.
I'm a shy person, so I think I'll manage a meaningful conversation with Tuomas in a good day, or a funny chat with Troy everyday.
:)
Troy. We're on the same plain. :) (I wouldn't be able to talk to Floor my jaw would just hang ...... )
LOL..."that's fucking insane". That comment is so true about most of the stuff Nightwish with Floor does. Also, equally fits the description of a lot of solo stuff Floor has done in the last 2-3 years. This Wacken2013 concert video was my first taste of Nightwish ever 2.75 years ago and I think it is the best performance I've seen, live or video, and I'm 73.
"That is very unique"
Well... Tuomas himself is very unique, one of a kind musician
Well, maybe two of a kind if you count Mozart.
@@ricklarsen7189 lol true that
What you said at 2:55 -ish is so very true. One of the things that really sets this band apart, is they have a very identifiable sound, but they don't rely on a formula to achieve that sound, you know what I mean? Every song sounds unique in it's own way, but is still instantly recognizable as Nightwish. What a testament to Tuomas' brilliant composition and song-writing skills.
Did you know this concert was Floor’s first as a permanent member, & the fans didn’t know it yet, but she had them! Floor had joined the band in October, 2012 to finish out their American, tour when Anette left unexpectedly. There is a documentary on it called p,ease Learn the setlist In 48 hours, which is a great watch.
Well... she wasn't yet an official member at the time of the recording (she was probably already been asked to join, but she had to keep it secret until the "big reveal" that actually happened when the DVD of this concert was released). I still think this is the best live music DVD ever made.
@@neffscape6353 , think that s what I said. This was her 1st concert as a permanent member, they didn’t disclose until the album release is my understanding. My point was the audience didn’t know, & she was completely accepted as a the lead singer.
@@islgrl292 Everyone saw it that way except Floor. She was still in a band she had founded herself and a record with new recordings was waiting to be released and a subsequent tour was booked. Becoming a member of Nightwish didn't fit into her plans at all. Only after the end of the Nightwish Tour does she agree and is then a member of two bands. But in the end, Nightwish destroys ReVamp.
There were 2 more concerts after this. A few months later they asked her, that's coming out of her mouth.
It's not possible for me to describe the happiness it gives me to witness when you rediscover music!
Thank you for sticking with Nightwish, among others on your goosebump journey. 🤘
In answer to your question: Tuomas! It would be a dream to have a discussion with the greatest composer of my lifetime. He seems likes such a humble and thoughtful person in interviews, and while he has been wise enough to surround himself with five other musical geniuses, he is sitting in the center seat of this rocket to the stars. It takes a special kind of person to put this level of talent together, keep it as a family without egos or power struggles, and to compose at a level, both musically and lyrically that is unmatched around the world. It would be very much like being able to speak with Bach.
Not gonna lie, I've probably watched the entire Wacken 2013 concert hundreds of times. I'm not even a little bit sick of it either, it's just so good. Storytime is one of my favorites. That chorus is amazing. It's simple, but Floor sings it so perfectly. And if you strip away the fairly upbeat vocals and lyrics the instrumentation itself sounds almost sinister. This is what Nightwish does better than anyone else IMO, that juxtaposition of polar opposite themes in the same song.
The choir in the background is pre-recorded, I'm pretty sure it's a boy's choir. That's what he used for Poet and the Pendulum anyway.
Yeah! That is a good description. The phrase "juxtaposition of polar opposites" is the perfect way to put words to that. Going to have to borrow that from you the next time this happens!
YES!
After Storytime it’s an easy decision - go for “Everdream” (same concert Wacken 2013)
NightWish is like a box of chocolates you never know what you're gonna get, you just know it's gonna be really good.... 👍👍🤘🤘
It's fascinating to compare Floor and the band's performance here with the recent one at Hellfest in France and see how certain elements have evolved.
I still find it funny this is a song Marco doesnt sing in yet he's singing to himself.
Loving that you're sharing with us your discovery journey!!
Next, I'd suggest: Nightwish - Romanticide or Ever Dream or Song of Myself! [Gabriel's links]
I think you'd enjoy Nightwish's 2005 tribute to Pink Floyd with Marco taking the lead on High Hopes. The vocals and musicianship are superb and it is a very emotional performance.
I love how u lean in closer so u can "hear better" 😂🤟
It totally works 😅
Please react to Epica - Consign to Oblivion - Live at the Zenith. They are also symphonic metal and will blow you away, literally!
Definitely one for the ages...
Ageeed
Oh man!
Enjoying so much your reactions and comments to Nightwish Live!!
Keep them coming!
Great reaction Tony, as always! So easy to love this band the more you hear. Tis pretty unique and definitely addictive. The choral sections are prerecorded tracks that Tuomas arranges and records and controls when played live. The operatic section that Floor sings here was originally done only by the choir. Floor said, “I can take that.” Maybe check out their heavier side now, with Romanticide, from same Wacken show. Keep exploring Nightwish!
oh man... what a nice reaction! if you want to hear something similar try "epica - unleashed live". you dont wanna miss that band if you like symphonic metal. Also their song "sancta terra" is played together with floor jansen!
Such a great song to get ya going. When this comes on playlist, I just get pumped everytime, and Floor's vocals, especially at the end are amazing.
Floor is really spitin' words here, and when the drum toms kick in for the crowd near the end awesome.!
best Rock band in 40 years. most innovative since Pink Floyd. am 70 and have seen the best live. great reaction from Colorado
How's your summer weather in Colorado right now?
Which other bands do these incredible switch-ups? Here's one.
Talking abt discovery mode: how about checking out not just another rabbit hole but a whole universe? The decades long project of another compositional mastermind on par with Tuomas Holopainen, i.e. Arjen Anthony Lucassen's AYREON/Star One?
Floor will be there, as will her sister, Nightwish's Marko, Epica's Simone Simons and many, many other greats of the international metal/prog scene.
I'd recommend starting with the video "The Day That The World Breaks Down" which does a great job as an introduction. If live is more what you're after, then "Everybody Dies" would be first pick. Cheers from Amsterdam
Yes! I concur! Ideal entry point to this rabbit hole / universe: "The day that the world breaks down" by Ayreon...
You are right Ayreon is also realy incredible in the switch ups. Both him an Thuomas are great composers. But verry different.
@@sanneke5104 Oh yes, and we listeners are all benefiting from these great but different creators. Something tells me that our music director will be blown away by Ayreon. Let's wait & see ;)
I concur.
I concur as well...
It's amazing how this phrase has caught on.
That is the backing track with the children's choir. don't feel dumb Tony! Nightwish is very unique and their style is quite varied. Although they usually have a little of that Nightwish sound somewhere in the arrangement. No worries about the pop comment. This chorus is definitely a little pop like. It was a single from their Imaginaerum record in 2011.
I would love to pick Tuomas' brain regarding his song writing. Maybe just a fly on the wall to take the song writing journey as an observer with the ability to read his mind during the process.
With Nightwsh it's never "over and over", it's "again and again", do it some more. It's creativity to the 100th power.
My tip Hellfest 2o22, a few weeks ago. A awesome Concert 🤘
What I really like about your channel is that you appreciate the real genius of what Tuomas is up to. You get the little details.
We told you every song is different. LOL
The song is from the Anette era, so that 'insane' operatic part was originally done with a choir. Anette doesn't do operatic vocals, but as you see Floor can, so she took over that part herself. I knew you'd like the drums in the buildup to that part.
Tuomas likes themes of stories and childhood innocence. He is a fan of composer Hans Zimmer and Disney.
Next???. Song of Myself or Everdream.
Jukka's drums in his solo break is like the Wilde Hunt coming up behind you! Amazing!
Floor's breath control is beyond amazing.....
You just found one of my favorite songs by my all time favorite band! I have loved Nightwish since I first heard them 10 years ago. I love when people find them and realize how amazing they are!
Next Nightwish song should be Last Ride Of The Day at Wacken 2013.
The whole Nightwish concert at Wacken 2013 is freaking amazing, probably one of their top 3 recorded performances ever.
You should also check a band called Epica. The singer (Simone) is a close friend of Floor. One of the members (Mark) was with Floor in her first band After Forever.
You can watch Consign To Oblivion live at Zenith, Sancta Terra live Retrospect (Duet with Floor), Stabat Mater Dolorosa (same concert, again with Floor), The Essence of Silence live in Brussels, Beyond the Matrix live in Zenith.
`I came here to comment exactly this! I am 46 years old and only discovered Nightwish in 2019. They are my favourite band of all time but through them I became exposed to the whole European Symphonic Metal scene. I agree, "Consign To Oblivion" live at the Zenith in Paris is a great first watch for reactors. I'm pretty sure that other songs and bands will be further recommended!
I'm familiar with European Symphonic metal since 25 years. I'm 41 and belgian so I was surrounded by those bands when I was a teenager 😁😁 I listen to Nightwish since 1999, Within Temptation since 1998, and After Forever, Epica, The Gathering, Tristania, and many more since then...
@@arianealexandre9038 Apologies! I realise now that my post could have been clearer. It was primarily aimed at DrumRollTony, I commented on your post because you already said what I was going to say. Most Nightwish fans are a lot more knowledgeable than me. I certainly didn't mean to insult you or call into question your knowledge of Symphonic Metal in general. I envy the musical environment you grew up in! I grew up in New Zealand and a good 90% of songs on the radio were American top 40 hits. In fact I stopped listening to the radio in my early 20's as the cynical promotion of cookie cutter acts by record companies became obvious to me. That they were marketing approvrd sounds instead of promoting talent seemed obscene to me. Even after I moved to the UK in 2004 I was unaware of the vitality of the scene in Europe. Apologies again, no insult was intended!
@@michaelnolan6951 I never felt insulted with your answer!! I was aware than European metal scene was not familiar to you, and I was proud to tell you that I had the chance to grow up during that era. I never compare my knowledgen with someone because you always run into someone who knows beter than you 😅😅
this is one of the first songs i heard of floor, imaginaerum was the album i started with and anette always has a special spot in my heart bc of that. floor put her own spin on it and i love it.
Nightwish works for the backing tracks with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and their choir and sometimes with a children’s choir.
Hello from spain, see you the masterpeace of nightwish call THE POET AND THE PEMDULUM YOU LIKED SURE
Hi dare.. Welcome to Nightwish Army.. Hope you can do Gabriel's list... Wacken was a bless and a great start for the band, Love Ghost Score and all the Wacken 2013 and Tempere in Finland , Wembley Arena also was great
They just performed at Hellfest in France. Check out the first song from the set, Noise, will blow your mind with their 2022 energy!! 🤘🤘
Just an amazing performance from an amazing group. Enjoyed this!
Thank you for that great reaction. This song was written for Nightwish' musical , IMAGINAREUM, and it was written to be sung by "Annette Olsen", who is more of a "folk/pop-singer"....so nice that you "picked up" on that.
The album is also written "more to the mainstream audiences".
"All their songs are different."
Yes, yes they are.
Complacency being set in one place. We are what we consume. So when we base ourselves on the basic of music and set a foundation we then progress in what other mainstream or common direction and we become stuck in these styles or ways of composing. But Tuomas thinks outside of the box and breaks the norms through the ceiling. Sometimes we just have to place what we know to the side and start again in a unique experimental direction add a little of what we know or are trained at and boom your own special creation. Thank you for another great reaction.
This is my second favorite Nightwish Song (My favorite being Let Loose the Mermaids) and it is so moving. I adore this completely.
Same concert - Last Ride of the Day. One of my favorites.
Or, Shoemaker. I love Floor especially in this song.
I sure do enjoy your Nightwish reactions!!
See Hellfest Nightwish Live Konzert Stream 2022, here of UA-cam
“The phantom of the opera” will blow your mind 😵, live version with the original singer “tarja” !!!! I promise !!! 🤯!! Haha 😂
Two other great(!) songs from the same Wacken 2013 concert that have that same interesting mix of (superficially) pop-metal, with very surprising breakdowns, and vocal and musical acrobatics (no spoilers!) are "Song of Myself" and "Romanticide" (all three of these songs are from the "Anette era", by the way, allthough a big difference is that Floor does all the vocal acrobatics live on stage, which Anette was not able to do)
Romanticide was on the album "Once", which was the last album with Tarja
@@klauskriegbaum2795 Ah, ok, I did not know that! Thanks for the info!
So where Anette was doing it, that was already a cover.
I HEAR MOST SONGS A LOT of TIMES.. maybe 500 or more .. and the special thing is it never is boring .. nice comment ..Greetings from Amsterdam
Awsum reaction bud ! Loving the energy and professional "o shit thats awsum" comments !
Looking forward to seeing you react to their masterpieces.
Strongly recommend you to listen to Nightwish live version of The poet and the pendulum and The greatest show on earth from their Wembley concert, both songs are pure gold
Nightwish Army UK popping in for a little story.
It is true that some songs (particularly from Imaginaerum/Dark Passion Play era) have more poppy sounds: the sound has changed many times over from the first to most recent album and even within albums there are different styles. It is great when music can explore different combinations of genres in new ways.
What I would like know from band members is how they practiced when starting to play an instrument, guitar in particular.
At some point you should react to Greatest Show on Earth. Trust me, it's worth it. :)
Tampere version of TGSOH is imo a bit better first experience.
I'm going to say imaginaerum/dark passion play poppy sound has some to do with Anette being way more pop singer than Floor or Tarja. (Those were the two studio albums with Anette)
Top-notch observations once again. Very enjoyable. Cheers! BTW, did you catch Nightwish recently on their US tour? I saw them at a pretty small club (Terminal 5) in NYC. It was stunning, of course. In a single encore, they played "Ghost Love Score" and "The Greatest Show On Earth" in their entirety, back-to-back. That's like 35 minutes right there just for those two songs LOL. Wonderful.
I didn't catch them unfortunately
Nightwish is so unique and separate from all other symphonic metal bands, with the exception of Epica. Tuomas writes a vast variety of music with a flair that makes them so exceptional, and distinctive within their genre. Great reaction to one of my favorites. Look forward to the next one. Cheers. 🍷
The arrangement was made by Tuomas Holopainen, the Metal Mozart of Nightwish. They recently did a multi-state tour in the US.
Ayreon is another rabbit hole you will probably like, as the music is different you and your students are used to hear. You could start with The Day The World Breaks Down (video) with 11 of the world best Metal singers. For a live performance try Ayreon with Everybody Dies.
Great and educated reaction. Love the channel !!!
Great to see your reaction - I love this song in special and I guess we all know those moments when Floor impresses us over the top and we think or yell "whoa Floor, comeon", and then she just sets even more on top, and we roll our eyes and shake our head xD
I enjoy your reactions and like how you don't only look on Floors performance but analyze it music and composition wise! Great to see any new release from you :D
Regarding "That is very unique" ... well yea ... Nightwish IS incredible, and so is Tuomas! Aside from that ... there are some like two more super interesting Bands of that era, so I really like to throw in Epica, as it seems like you didn't have your hands on yet (regarding your reaction clips here at last). Soooooo if you like to have a peek on an other unique and incredible band - somehow even linked to nightwish regarding their origins and even the female singers are good friends, you may really enjoy a peek at their "Retrospect live" performance... with the song "Sancta Terra" where even Floor joins in! OR you may want a mindboggling live performance with "Consign to oblivion" - the live Zenith clip!
Would be really great to see you react to that band aswell, and I am suuuure we all would enjoy your analytic view to that band a lot :)
I will always say that Nightwish is the most unique and perhaps original band to see them in life, too many talents were combined together, the level of composition is quite difficult to match, we are not only talking about the musical and its arrangements, but also the vocal potential, the power of the lyrics, let's say that to be able to make this type of music, at this level, you need a lot of work and a lot of talent.
Love the reaction and glad your enjoying the new music. Perhaps Romanticide and Seven Days to The Wolves from Wacken next and Weak Fantasy from Tampere. Couple of other songs for you. Epica's Sancta Terra (10th anniversary featuring Floor) backed by an orchestra and choir. Ayreon's The day the world breaks down, official video of first track of a prog metal concept album featuring 11 of the best metal vocalists in the world. Ayreon is written and produced by Arjen Anthony Lucassen. He has a rolodex full of Singers and Musicians from the top metal bands who will come to his call if available. Both bands are big rabbit holes to go down but well worth it.
This song is definitely groovy sounding. Nothing wrong with some pop vibes. AKA catchy. But then again, I listen to almost everything. Nightwish is just my favorite.
How to describe Nightwish with one word? Insane? Epic? Unique? Special? Phenomenal?
The Metro Voices choir in London handles most choir recordings for Nightwish. I believe the children's choir in Poet is a different choir group.
This song is like going on a carnival ride
When Floor sings she makes my groin feel like when I used to climb ropes in gym class. 😂❤️🔥😜🤘🏽
You’re the first person I’ve seen ever react to the backtracks.
It's really nice to hear a reaction from someone who has a really clever musical brain, who really understands the genius in the details rather than just saying 'wow that's a great song' - not that there's anything wrong with that, but this makes a nice change 🤘
Definitely the queen of windmill
I know it's not all about Floor..but, actually, It is.😍💯
Nightwish is what happens when you take 6 great musicians, including a composer/songwriter with out of this world storytelling and emotion-evoking skills and you crank up the epicness and theatricality to 11.
Great reaction 👍👍👌👌
I'd love to see you react to Nightwish's "Greatest Story Ever Told" performance. Just bring some water or something cause it's about 20 minutes long, but an incredible experience. As for other bands, Epica has already been recommended in the other comments, and I'd also toss out Sonata Arctica. "My Dream's but a drop of Fuel for a Nightmare" is a personal favorite but doesn't have a live version I can find, so another alternative would be "White Pearl, Black Oceans" which does have a live version on youtube.
Somehow mistyped, the nightwish song is called "Greatest Show on Earth". No idea how I screwed that up.
@@anderspike7895 lol i was thinking never heard that one
@@frankmerris8821 I shouldn’t type things right after waking up @_@
Incidentally fun fact about the other Band I recommended, Sonata Arctica, the lead singer of that, and the keyboard player/writer of nightwish are good friends, and the nightwish writer said in an interview early on he was thinking of dissolving nightwish until the singer of sonata arctica took him on a hike in Finland and told him he’d regret it forever if he gave up on his dream.
🤩👌💥💯
One helluwa catchy song, eh? With one heck of a catchy chorus, huh?
The 'formula' on composing works every time, even with one hand behind the back, so to say.
Cool reaction män and keep on rockin with this magical band!
🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙
"Weak Fantasy" live at Tampere 2015 next by them (???) 🙄
(more of some stick - handling by the present drummer Mr. Kai Hahto)
Yea dont worry about it, we all know.
This was written for their second singer, Annette.
Her voice was way more pop, hence the more popy sound.
Tuomas puts so much of himself into his work. He is Peter Pan and has alluded to this in interview. Anette did this brilliantly on Imaginaerum, but, as always, Floor just takes the back catalogue and stamps HER take on a song. No need for a chorus, I’ll do it all myself.
Really like your commentary, the right balance of material...and not jut "OMG that was good" reaction
The perfect example of what Floor can do? Search for the video of the Hellfest concert 2022 in France 😉 the ending of the show with Ad Astra where she held that last note as if she is from another world❤️
Yeah, and she did it at the very end of an intens 90min gig. Recently YT is adding the streaming statistics and that last minute is the most viewed of the entire concert😜👏
Love your Nightwish reacts! For another iconic female fronted band, If you haven't heard of them yet you should check out Lacuna Coil, Italian Gothic Metal. The House of Shame from their Live 119 Show would be a good place to start, although everything from that concert is absolutely fantastic.
So much power :-)
Thx for the good moments with you and music.
As you is a drummer and baseplayer, I think you will enjoy Seventh Wonder. Take a look at 'the light'. 😉😎
for this kind of Music, check out Within Temptation, and Epica too. btw, I think is funny but these 2 even had live shows, with a full Orchestra on the stage, while Nighwish doesn't eventhough they are one of the first in this genre.
Tony if you want to experience something like this from on stage, you could always do some digging around and see if the Seattle Rock Orchestra is looking for some help
Agree with you on the pop rock reference. I always thought of this song as being pop metal and their answer to Metallica's Enter Sandman. And I don't think it's a bad thing
Great NW reaction again!
Good pickup on the pop feel, this song was off an album for Anette who was more pop oriented than Tarja.
The earliest song that I am aware of the combines operatic voices with metal is Ozzy's Diary of a Madman (1981), which uses opera voices in the latter half of the song. Anyone know of an earlier example? - if it exists, I would like to know!
Great reaction!
Something new from Finland...BATTLE BEAST - Black Ninja (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
Thanks
Thx!
The best band in the world
Yeah you probably already know but Tuomas said that though they work closely with the London Philharmonic orchestra, as a purist he would much rather have a live orchestra travelling and playing at their concerts but recognised that it would be almost impossible to sort it so having the LPO on tape is the next best thing.
I would give this band a try is a bit heavier than nightwish but so good I think you will like it, this is a good song to start with they sing here with a live orchestra and choir! EPICA - Unleashed (OFFICIAL LIVE)
Good audio quality. 👍🏼
It's hard for me to believe you've never heard before - NIGHTWISH - Storytime
you would go crazy over "romanticide" by nightwish - enjoy
This song is a poppier sounding tune, as it was written for Anette. Floor makes it a superior song. The whole band brings it during this performance!
I'd like to chat with Troy over a pint... he just seems like my people; deep, funny and a touch weird!
I always describe Storytime as "pop-metal". No hate! Just FYI there's a few other songs by them I describe as the same genre; Alpenglow (Live in Mexico City) and Elan (Live in Buenos Aires). Please be careful that you get those performances, because they're much better than the other ones out there.
But it might be a good idea to do some of their non-pop-metal songs in between? :-P I mean you still haven't checked out I Want My Tears Back (Live in Buenos Aires) or My Walden (Live at Wembley).
And I believe you're also "missing" Romanticide and Ever Dream from Wacken 2013. And then, obviously, Poet and the Pendulum and Greatest Show on Earth.
Happy trekking and thanks for letting us come along for the ride!
on Greatest Show on Earth, do the Tampere vesion
Please react to Shudder before the beautiful at Wembley and Weak fantasy, at Tampere🤗👊🏻🇾🇪
Found I like a lot of the Anette era songs sang by Floor, maybe because of the more rock sound.
As for another drum into opera, might try Liliac “Dear Farther”. Definitely not the same scale but drums into a siren sound.
