Spoken Word by James Hetfield:
I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or a dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me
Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there's not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me
Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, please God, help me, help me
Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell
Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

It's hard to fathom Apocalyptica's journey after this. From being called a cheap cover brand, to playing Wagner with orchestra and circus performances all the way to being the most respected cello-driven band collaborating with the band that started them. This is incredible. Hats off to you, men. Rock on! 🤘🤘
When ever were they called a cheap cover band. How dare thee.... (lol) They F'n rock man and always have. Long live APOCALYPTICA.
@@kiltedcampers Haha, I've always agreed but I do remember back when they started some people loved it but others (mostly the elitists) were saying it was kitsch and stuff. And yet you have songs like Fisheye that rocks harder than a lot of bands, lol. Now Eicca and the others can say they had the last laugh! :)
Wtf are you listening to?... This was some of the most horrendous shit I've ever heard
Metallica was never known as a cover band. When Metallica first started, they did do their own versions of covers but did not tell anyone they were performing covers and nobody knew any different and Metallica was never called or known as a "cover band". Also Apocalyptica may be a cover band of sorts, they were never know as a cheap cover band but a band that did fantastic reimagined covers of songs and made them their own.
@@Iamadrummer It's not that deep
There's something very impressive about seeing a cello play a thrash metal solo. Probably the coolest thing I've seen done with an instrument in my life.
Very sexy also!!
Nothing about this version is thrash anymore, sadly
The solo was sick as fuck. Totally agreed I've never seen something like that before. I've also never seen so many 50 y/o's in the comments like the one above me crying about a song because it's not like it was when they were in college 😂😂
It’s pretty amazing….
Go check out Scott Pingle's tribute to Cliff doing Anesthesia/Pulling Teeth from S&M2.
This is like being in a medieval tavern and some ranger is telling one of his adventures.
In the background some bard is giving it all on the stage with his cello 😂😂😂
While chickens roam freely in hay
@@deeforty Do no kill those chickens or the entire town will come after you.
I love James narrating his lyrics instead of singing them. It makes it feel more personal like reading a letter that was written before he lost his limbs, hearing and sight by an explosion. But knowing that it’s just happening inside his head. It’s heavy
Me too. The helplessness of the guy's situation is magnified more that way. This is just so epic that now with the Cielo accenting the feel of the song, it' has spread its wings even more...and of course the mind-blowing guitar solo replicated note for note, which is just so perfectly executed!
His voice in this gives me goosebumps!!! It’s epic!!
I would rather he sang it but it is awesome
There's a part of me that wishes James had actually sung on this, but it doesn't matter, not when you hear all the rest of it. Somehow he managed to ignore a vocal melody he's sung hundreds (if not thousands) of times, and make the delivery of each line meaningful. That takes tremendous work and effort. There are hints of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits in his voice. It sounds fantastic. The orchestration and every other decision made on this song make it new and original. Having a fresh take on a classic is no easy task, but this does it to perfection. It's almost more of a musical art piece than a song, and that's more than okay.
He probabl charges more money to sing than speak lol
No, Apocalyptica is instrumental only. This is OK as it is.
This was unbelievable. It brings a classic song into 2024. I thought it was superb in every way. The setting was spot on.
Well, James sang "One" with Apocalyptica in the 30 Anniversary of Metallica. You can find the video, and it's amazing, because Lars and Kirk also played their instruments along the guys of Apocalyptica.
You wrote what I felt. James speaks as Leonard Cohen would had. Two times during the speak we do guess he is struggling against a pulse of singing, howling, like the wolf he is ! Great interpretation with the Apocalyptica team !
Although people
Commented they didn’t like James speaking instead of singing, that made this version special to me!
It made it has its own flavor. If he had sang like he’s used to sing, it would be just another cover with James making it sound as the original version. The fact that he spoke the lyrics made me focused on the drama of the lyric itself instead of the vocal melody, making the song look as a movie. Awesome version!
Es especial para ti. Para mí es ESPECIALmente desagradable e inconexa.
It became a story instead of just another cover
@@Mr.FranciscodeMiranda precisely!!
Exactly, it made me pay attention to the lyrics like I never did before!
@@anadoichinova4713 exactly! Even though I know all the lyrics, I,ve always focused on the melody. Now I kinda feel the lyrics instead of only knowing it
James has to be casted as a Disney villain now!
He could be The new wishmaster
Fuck Disney
That would be very cool right.
He shall be... The Cowardly Lion 🦁
I had the same thought. Will James get into acting?
When the face-melting solo kicked in after the bridge, I said, loudly, "HOLY SHIT!" My husband looked at me like, "wtf?" and I had to tell him "it's the solo from 'One' being shredded on a cello!"
He wasn't impressed. I think it's time for a divorce! 😂
😂🤘🏻
I am more impressed by the drums, since Lars was not even included. lol
'solo', 'shredded', too bad I'm married.
Check out the old Apocalyptica Songs, those where they were just 4 Cellos, no Drums, maybe a feature voice every now and then.
I loved the purity of those, so much energy in those, so much better than this.
Time for an upgraded ring!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
James could easily have a legendary voice over career.. damn
Yeah, he could be the voice of Duke Nukem 🤣
He's done it once before, for a show called "The Hunt".
Absolutely love this! 40 year Metallica fan here, I’ll be 70 this year and this gets me going, lol! ❤️
Totally agree, it’s awesome!!
I dig it. They did their own thing with it and made it their own, including the choice to have James narrate the story instead of singing the lyrics. Metallica has done plenty of covers where they’ve changed things up and made a song their own. I think Apocolytica has done the same thing with their version of One. Good job!
I agree. Like what would've even been the point of having James, if he would've simply done the thing like he always done?
they did it years before and it was great, so this is basically a remake and I dont know if its better, but hey! apocalyptica never misses :')
@@Stevenaramburo Cellos don`t sound very metallic or heavy. Not heavy enough for me, but symphonically, it's great!
So far one of the better remakes/covers
Look up Apocalyptica.
Their first album is titled:
Apocalyptic plays Metallica on four chellos.
They did 2 albums like that.
Then did a album with Pantera, Metallica, and 3 other bands.
They have been on tour all over the world and started out in 1996.
Tons of albums.
Absolutely phenomenal!!
James' voice is giving me Leonard Cohen vibes, especially from You want it darker, amazing.
Perfect❤
I wish he was IN the video though 😆
exactly!
Metallica: One is my war song!
Apocalyptica: Hold my cello in the ruins!
Long live Metallica. The greatest metal music band in the world!
It's an anti-war song.
Why do that bring up in my mind the scene from the ruins in the movie "The Pianist"..
My Cello ruins the song, perhaps? :D :D :D
My neighbours are going to love this song....
Mine too😂

one with metallica, having officially bass guitar in it, and chellos and shit. what a time to be alive.
and with more decent drums on it too !

This isn’t a song to me. This an entire freakin play, full of emotion and story telling. I didn’t like it at first, but once you realize this is something you aren’t listening to in the gym but rather on full volume in the living room with a glass of blackened bourbon; it’s an entirely different experience. This is an entire freaking journey.
I'm drinking bourbon in my living room rn and it's still bad lol
Metallica and Apocalyptica should do be a special Tour together - it will be fuckin insane!
As long as Lars isn't involved, it would be awesome.

The subject reminds me of Trapped Under Ice.
Yes it does. Kinda like a furious Edgar Allan Poe character ready to snap anyone's neck. lol
Be impressed by James Hetfield reciting just as Leonard Cohen did, whom James admired when Cohen was alive. As the years go by, Metallica gets bigger and bigger.
Imagine how big they'd be with Dave Mustaine!

Wow... You realize that is APOCALYPTICA playing, right? Collaborating James and Rob.
@@SuperNehalenniaWow... Do you realize that the song playing is a Metallica song in collaboration with Apocalyptica?
And shittier and shittier. Lame af and Metallica has a hard enough time with thier identity. Last good album was the black one after that they went pop metal.
"For democracy, a man would give his only begotten son" . I really appreciate the story attached to the writing of the original but I can also appreciate the storytelling in this version as well. Intense and thoughtful imagery to go with powerful and imaginative musicianship. A creative representation of a highly respected song and very, very well done.
If my orchestra instructor was a long haired, bearded and tattooed man, I might have stayed in class
Nah, you have other problems..
@@juliebrooks1980 why? What does having tattoos and a beard have to do with teaching and music? He might not even know how to play an instrument and you'd stay in his class because he has a beard and tattoos? What if he was a child molester? Ope he's got a beard and tattoos so ya gotta stay. What a dumb thing to say yuuuuuuuck
This version is so dark and beautiful to the core. Epic.
This just shows you how orchestrated Metallica's music is. James's and Lars's compositions are like classical music with beautiful melodies and layers. As a cello player myself, this is even more amazing. Kudos to all involved! (I would love to hear a version with James actually singing, though the spoken word is cool)
Precisely! This reveals even better, how skilled and genius the composition is. There’s pretty much more music this than in those million-making songs You usually hear from the radio.
Lmao
Omg this is amazing !!!!!!! So creepy hearing James narrating the words- it's so dark and suspenseful. Amd I love Apolyptica, they are masters in their own right. I absolutely LOVE this. !!!!!!!!!
We need S&M 3 now
This is awesome, putting life back into a nearly 40 year old song. I hope that one day this song can find its way into a movie.
@puppetthepirate sorry bellend, I guess I overestimated the intelligence of people reading the comments and did not allow for people like you that might also be reading. I mean its a fresh spin on a classic song. Understand now?
@puppetthepirate For real like wtf?
Now we need a LIVE version of this.
It's so ironic that I first heard of this band because I accidentally downloaded their Unforgiven cover from Napster, thinking it was Metallica's. Now they feature Hetfield in one of their rendition of One.
Napster's Ulrich Weekend
I listened to it 3 times, I don't continue anymore because I have to do other things and this masterpiece has left me very excited
Same here! 3x in a row
This totally feels like something you'd hear as final boss music in a Final Fantasy game
We'll all be dancing mad ;)
Sepiroth soundtrack for sure 😊
sad part about this is that the song describes the reality that many people are living in this moment... Peace would be nice for a change.
Really? Humans never lived in such peacefull world like last 80 years.
As Megadave said Peace Sells.....But Who's Buying?
@@SihmunathThere has been nothing peaceful about the last 80 years. Civilain massacres all over the world, like in Cyprus and Syria, the Gulf war, the 6 day war, Ukraine, Russia, Palestine, Israel, Vietnam, Korea, just from the top of my head.
But the sad thing is that no one really knows about the 'silent war.' The anti-poaching war. We are in the midst of the mass extinction because of the depletion of biodiversity and people risking their lives and lives of their families to protect what is left and no one knows. The things that poachers and other people from the illegal wildlife trade do to the animals are the worst imaginable horror possible. Watch RHINO MAN the movie and follow Global Conservation Corps and The Zoo of Queensland. There you will learn about the horrors of the silent war.
This is one of the all-time best covers I've ever heard. It broke new ground while still being true to the original. Absolutely beautiful.
Were we listening to the same song?
It’s not a cover, it’s a different version. Garbage.
Hell, this version of One is interesting! Not only do we get to hear a hearkening back to Metallica S & M, but we get to hear the lyrics spoken in as clear a way as possible! Kudos Metallica and Apocalyptica!
someome : you cant shredded on a cello
apocalyptica : are you sure?

::takes a deep breath:: WHEW! That wasn't just a cover song, that wasn't just an EPIC music video, that wasn't even a symphonic metal MASTERPIECE. That, ladies and gentlemen, was an entire EXPERIENCE!!! Patric Ullaeus has completely surpassed himself as a film director and cinematographer. The juxtaposition of the majestically beautiful cellos and James Hetfield actually speaking the lyrics instead of growling them out was just completely HAUNTING! Having listened to this song literally THOUSANDS of times over the last 30 plus years or so, we have certain expectations when we start hearing those oh so familiar chords and notations playing. Even the eponymous S&M album from over 25 years ago, with it's overly bombastic and brutal orchestral version gave us yet another aspect to the song that we have grown to accept and cherish over the years. THIS, quite literally and simply, destroys EVERY expectation and preconception ONE might have about how this song should sound. Is it the definitive version? NO, we already have that one, and it's perfect in its own right. THIS is simply an offering and homage delivered with love, respect, passion and class. Tough, dirty, gritty, ugly, brutal. But, that's WAR folks. Everyone involved in this project came into it with a very clear picture of what they intended to achieve, and they completely surpassed them. THIS is one of those videos that's going to stick with you for a VERY long time. Apocalyptica has given us something we never even knew we needed, and now that we have it, we're NEVER letting it go.

Terrible song and comment
Him narrating versus singing makes this song more tragic and beautiful.
No, it doesn't. It's over dramatic spoken word and it's not even on time, to boot.
Oh my god, this is one of the most unique covers I've ever heard. The spoken lyrics somehow make it much darker, it's brilliant
I adore all of this. Hetfield has richness and depth in his voice and this version came really close to shudder me with sort of intimacy. Powerful.
If it were the '80s or '90s, this music video would easily be among the best on MTV

James with the lyrics like he is reading it from a long lost book of a tale from a war long since over. I L:OVE IT
Someone said the music and the voice dont really match, but I think that was intentional. It's supposed to be chaotic and almost uncomfortable.

I need to catch my breath again after seeing this epic song and video...now let me find the right words to express how I feel and it's going to be hard...
This is a video and an interpretation that really touched my soul, it's moving and intense and a very different interpretation from your previous cover of ONE and yet equally beautiful.
This new cover of yours reveals more the human side of war, the desperation linked to it, the images are strong and very fitting for the concept. And James Hetfield's narrating voice is really perfect, it gives a different touch. I'm so happy of the collaboration with James and Rob, this is a great collaboration project and once again Apocalyptica shows that after many years they can surprise us with something completely new.
Sorry for being late, I missed the premiere this time but I will have this video and song on repeat today and not only today, of course!
