Another tip to add if you're using a kit lens that doesn't have those low fstops and you still want to get a blurred background and sharp subject, just separate your figure further from the background and move back and zoom in. You can get a blurry background at any fstop , you just have to move the subject further or closer for the desired effect.

Another tip with focusing is back button focusing. Basically turn off the focus with shutter button, and only focus using a custom button. Great for moving subjects as well!

Hey Jared love your videos. I recommed you look into focus stacking tutorials. This will allow you to merge several photos and have them be in focus while not having the subject be on the focus line. So if in a composition you a figure to be farther behind the main one but still in focus you can achieve that.

Your videos are amazing, and it's really entertaining how you approach photography. A tip that I can give to you is to check the Depth of Field calculator. Depth of Field is basically how much of your subject will be in acceptable focus based on your focus line (real term: focus plane). This is related to your f/Stop. This might help you place some additional items that you might want to have in the foreground and/or background and have them appear blurry, which can be useful for framing the shot.

if your focusing part, when you were talking about touching the square, does your sony have touch shutter to where you can just touch the screen and it will take the picture? That keeps me from shaking my canon. Another thing you might look into is back button focus, on my canon I can assign a button on the back of the camera to do my focusing, then when i push the shutter button, all it does is take the picture. No focusing at all on that button. That way you could just leave the lens on AF all the time an not worry about having to switch it so much.

Nice video and great photos. I'd be interested in the topic of if you shoot at f/1.8 or just off the edge of the lens' physical limits to improve sharpness. Shooting at f/2 can increase sharpness and not affect the background or DoF too much. Also, as you talked about "cranking up" the f-stop to f/5.6 to increase the depth of field, the video at 1:44 actually shows the aperture opening-up so that the f-stop is lower! It just makes my teeth itch :)

Awesome tutorial video. I'm brand new to toy photography as a hobby, and I'm really struggling with trying to either expand or contract my depth of field. I play with the focus and the F-stop, but I can't seem to see a difference on my camera's viewscreen. I can do a shallow depth of field okay, but sometimes I want more objects to be in focus within a wider depth of field.

The best way to get that crisp look while using a phone would be to follow the creative lighting steps I mentioned! Lighting is one of the BEST was to sharpen up your shots!

as the boss says, lighting is everything. How about using your phone on portrait mode, so that the "time of flight" data is recorded and the background separation information is recorded for later use. Use constant lights as you can't use flash. A tripod or other phone holder is essential perhaps too! Put the phone on timer mode so you don't knock it when taking a photo (or trigger it by Bluetooth), use your optical zoom where possible (if your camera has this) and avoid digital zoom, if you have manual mode options, explore those and use a lower ISO if possible (with good lighting). I think the most important thing is creativeness, which Sirdork obviously has.
Then process your shots afterwards carefully so that you don't overcook them, but some sharpening and clarity can help sometimes.
