- People often debate about which tank or plane in War Thunder is the worst, but for me it's no competition. The Type 93 SPAA is the single most useless vehicle in the entire game. Its Type 91 missiles (pretty much the equivalent FIM-92 Stingers) are broken in numerous ways, which means that even though it can only engage air targets, it needs to be extremely lucky to get a kill on one.

if i didnt know any better id have assumed every aircraft in the game is spamming a fuck ton of flares or chaff (like in pretty much every other game with lock ons, unless it's bf4 in which case lockons like stinger are probably banned by the server admins and will get you auto-kicked). hard to tell if this thing is lockon or wire guided, or does lockon only work when it feels like it?

Part of me wonders if there's an issue with flares not rendering in- I'm not sure which aircraft would have them to begin with but if a lot of the misses were due to invisible flares that would make sense too I guess.

From my Understanding, the Type 91 missile that the Type 93 fires is quite an advanced IR missile that is capable of completley ignoring flares and other types of IR countermesure, and is a very accurate missile, if the stats are to be belived, so this missile really shouldn't turn pacifist right before impact and miss.
I can see why Gaijin wouldn't want a missile to always land on Target, but the Type 93 should definetly have much deadlier missiles due to it being completley unable to engage anything but air targets.
considering that it's got what, 8 shots total, and it's a dedicated AA, if it can't kill stationary helicopters, what was the point of adding it to the game?
They nerfed Type93 and Mistrals to a Stinger level of performance while irl both are much much better
The targeting system seems COMPLETELY WRONG in this video!
For most Generation 3 IR Homing Missiles you would TRACK the target UNTIL the missile "tells" you that it has a lock-on both audibly through a tone and by changing the color on (or even the shape of) the targeting box. At this point, you fire, and the missile launches and then tracks the target ALL BY ITSELF. You are now free to track and lock another target.
The old Redeye and first-generation Sidewinder could track a target from behind but almost never achieved a lock-on from the front. It would lock-on about 60% of the time from the rear oblique quarters.
The first-generation Stinger and later SA-7 "Grail" could lock a target from the full rear and rear oblique quarters easily (the rear 180-degree arc) but was only able to lock on to the forward oblique angles about half the time and could only achieve a frontal lock-on about 25% of the time.
Later versions of the Stinger and the Rolling Airframe Missile (as well as the Sidewinder with IR uncage for its sensor) could lock a target from the front around 50% of the time while getting a "stern-lock" over 80% of the time.
High Off-Boresight Missiles like the Soviet AA-7 "Archer" and the US AIM-9X Sidewinder can lock targets at 90 to 120 degrees off of their "nose" (the missile's and the launching aircraft's nose) and can lock head-on targets pretty easily (80% of the time plus if the literature is to believed).
A typical "good track" by the Missile Launcher will keep the aircraft in the targeting box of the CLU (command-launch unit) for around 5 seconds but sometimes (especially in "stern-chase" tracking) a lock-on can be achieved in as little as 3 seconds. The tone will sound (or "Growl" in the case of a Sidewinder) and the targeting box will indicate a lock.
If a missile has an "active guidance data link" then you will keep the CLU's targeting system tracking the target and the missile WILL FOLLOW your directed targeting until it hits whatever you have centered in the box or it runs out of steam.

But Wargaming has been revamping maps the community has been wanting forever, buffing German heavy tanks, adding game modes like frontline and steel hunter and also keeping them, adding rewards and events people actually want to grind for. I would say Wargaming has been better off than Gaijin recently.

Sure, the BR matchamking in War Thunder is questionable, in World of Tanks you will 99.99% of the times be placed in a match with higher tier tanks that will most likely rape you. And perhaps the teams are going to be made out of premium OP tanks.

The Type 91 missiles are are based on the Stingers but with some slightly different properties. The Type 91 has less explosive filler and no proximity fuse but has better tracking capabilities and is designed to bypass flairs. To make up for less explosive mass the missile is designed to ram the target in a way that the explosive can detonate in way that maximizes damage. Currently the biggest issue is that tracking is completely broken and not historically accurate. In game the missiles at first used to fly along the ground and come up from below the target but this often resulted in missiles slamming into trees and other objects. Currently the missiles fly above the target still has the same issue of the guidance seemingly shutting off upon final approach and thus nit being able to react to changes in movement from the target. It could be fixed further if Gaijin implemented the alternative firing methods the Type 93 has such as electronic locking which in which it would perform just like all the other radar guided SAMs in game as well as a manual guided mode that was used Incase guidance systems were down or Incase of close range target. TLDR: fix the damage output model and guidance systems and all will be fine.

ehh I've gotten plenty of air to ground kills in the m15a1, as well as ground kills, but I guess its not for everyone, and the m16 is a bit better than it in all respects except one hit kill potential on aircraft and armor pen.

Clemson sucks IRL (city and university) and the ship is absolutely useless.
The British Clemson does have one advantage over the American Clemson. It's got a useable AA defense.

With the Zis 43, you can actually kill both tanks and aircraft reliable while the Type 93 has 8 missiles that almost always fails to kill even when they hit and it cant kill tanks except with a lucky artillery strike.

The Type 91 missile is primarily electro-optical with IR as a secondary seeker mode, the Type 91 does have a proximity fuse and is also thrust-vectored. It's a domestic missile, not a Stinger, and should be much better.
They nerfed anything not Igla to igla level of performance. Mistrals and type93 are affected and heavily nerfed.

I was helicopter door gunner for several years in the military, I have seen hellfire missiles and sidewinder missiles go stupid and lose track on targets but its usually old stock thats been sitting in a warehouse for years then they give them to us to get rid of during training.
Also to my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) despite how incredibly harmless this thing to literally everyone, everyone will go out of their way to prioritize it as a target. Like it can be sitting between 2 Abrams, both of those Abrams looking at you, and this truck facing the other way and ppl will still rather shoot it above every other actual threat

Germany never really suffered, and trust me I know, I ground the german tree up to the Leo 1 and even play the Maus. Who really suffers is British, France, and Italy at low tier. besides that no one tree really suffers much more than the other while germany suffers the least overall.

@@titan_tanker yes I get tired of it too but every other country tree gets uptiered into bullshit matchmaking. Shermans against Tiger IIs is not fun for for american players at all unless the tiger II player is an idiot. German 6.7 performs still fairly well even at 7.7, and only really suffers against T54s, 55s, and any other well armored russian tank. Before hte new volumetric shell update, most of the russian heavies at that br range were actually quite easy to kill with the long 88 or the 105 or the 128, hell even the long 75 could do it from the front if you shot trap them. I dont know if the volumetric shell update will completely ruin this ability to do this, but even so, the only country germany has a real hard time with at uptiers is Russia with their very good armor. The British and Americans are very easy to shot trap, aim for weakspots, or just aim any where as many of their tanks at 7.0-7.7 are not all that well armored excluding the M103, Conq, and the T32. Yes I too hate facing HEATFS and sabot in my german vehicles, but imagine playing a sherman with the 76 at 5.7, your gun cant do shit against a panther's UFP, a well angeled tiger I, ferds, Tiger II Hs, Tiger II Ps (easy to kill with a cheekshot though), jagdpanthers, jagdtigers, oh and we cant forget the amazing 5.7-6.7 German CAS like the ME-262 A Narwhal, the Premium Do 335, and many others.

This seems to me as being one of two things, an extremely primitive Proportional Navigation law, probably Acceleration=Navigation Constant*Line of Sight Rotation, or it could be the Navigation constant is constantly changing as a Result of V of C or just a poorly written formula possibly missing terms.
A slightly more advanced form of PN could be added without needing Kallman filtering or time to go/Zero Effort miss calculations that would allow it to keep up with a maneuvering target and all aspect engagement which is what it seems to struggle with at the moment.
Onto the FIM-92 itself, much is said of the missile and a lot misinterpreted.
It is a single colour later two colour nutating (rosette scan if Im not mistaken by at least the mid 1980s) Frequency modulating seeker allowing for superb noise suppression in higher micron bands and yet retaining the seeker sensitivity to spot lock and track lower/longer bands of IR radiation on key hot spots of aircraft like the nose, inlet, leading edges rotor disk etc.
Now while digital and being able to discern some patterns as obvious countermeasures, enough flares at certain aspects and power settings can pose great difficulties to these 3rd gen IR threats in flight and while sitting on the rail its why pre-flaring on attacks became a habit even for Soviet Pilots in Afghanistan. It does not make a missile perfectly immune to flares, They're called missiles for a reason :P

I just really want to enjoy the type 93, and I often do, but when the rolling around dodging fire, repairing allies and capping points is more fun that using the thing for what it's intended, we truly have a problem
Even the hell fire missiles are acting so weird... (they sometimes track like Aim9 B missiles) I think Gaijin did mess up some of the coding in regards to the missiles seeking ability. Out of curiosity, I also realize ADATS missiles also get flopped by flares and I wonder if that was realistic...

It seems quite effective. you distract the enemies so much they just pancake into the ground.
The Closed Arrow used on the vehicle is actually based on the Japanese Type 91 MANPADS... which only *looks* like a Stinger, but isn't.
On the other hand it does apparently have a guidance system that's better than Stinger's, so that's besides the point.
But the explosive charge might be reduced because of the fact that it's not a Stinger. No sure what the actual charge is though.

But yes, the Clemson is one of the few ships I feel pity towards when destroying it, even if I know the player will someday come back with his new Sumner/Somers class destroyers, all guns blazing.
@@chatnicolas02 You're thinking of the normal Clemsons, DD-213 and DD-336. The Clemson L/45 has one gun instead of four, the gun itself is worse, it's slower, and has less torpedoes. Same BR.
@@flippedstug9517 Also lets not forget HMS Hawkins (read as Lolkins= heavy cruiser so bad, that gaijin not even dared to announce its release despite being one of the few heavy cruisers in the game by that time), and pretty much most fairmiles in the game (tho I blame compression, not ships for this one)

Just watched your review on it, and while I used to complain about the annoying flaws of Japanese destroyers, I think I should have been a bit more grateful in retrospect haha.

The archer has one of the best guns at 3.0, and can kill things pretty reliably if you can get the gun on target.

If used properly the missile is quite good, it seems to perform better at longer ranges than close, and obviously you have to take into account the trajectory of the enemy aircraft, if you fire the missile at a weird angle it will miss, but if you fire it at an angle were the missile will have no problem hitting the target, well, it's a kill

Between Gaijin not knowing with an "Imaging IR" seeker is, the woeful proximity fuze performance, piss-poor warhead, or the lack of its mach 1.9 speed IRL... no wonder it's the "worst".

Just to clarify, the Type93 is not using the Stinger's seeker, but a much more advanced one being IIR/UV. That and the Type 93 is the second version of the Type 91 missile.

The Type 93 uses the Type 91 - a weapons system that looks like the stinger, but differs in being 10mm wider, 30mm longer, a bit lighter, and a bit slower. The Type 91 was developed to replace the stinger in JGSDF service, and is thought to have improved guidance, but technical data is hard to come by.

2 years later, the only addition to the Japanese tech tree was basically an R3 for Japan. Missile improvements for the Type 93 allegedly, but the vehicle is still absolute garbage. It can't even lock onto a stationary KA-50 at 4km because IRCM exists.
I have never before experienced so much pain in one video about warthunder, until this moment.

You talked about it being roughly a Stinger missile, which isn't a BAD assumption, but still incorrect. The Type 93 fires the Japanese homemade stinger missile, the Type 91, which is one of the few 4 Gen MAN Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) that exist currently, meaning that unlike the Stinger missiles that we have or the AIM-9's, this missile is actually MODERN (or sub-modern if you define modern as post 2000's) as the first iterations were made in 1991. So if anything, this thing should be WAY better than a Stinger and probably on par with at LEAST an AIM-9L or more likely M. And that's not even going into the further massive improvement with the Type 91 Kai variant that's currently used on active duty Type 93 systems.
I gave this thing so many tries before finally just removing it from my lineup.

For best results, you need to wait for jets to fly past your hidden position, and be ready to fire a missile behind them. If given any chance to turn slightly, or climb, they missile will often miss.
