The OTOMATIC is the end-of-the-line SPAA in the Italian tech tree in War Thunder. It used to be amazing but has been heavily overshadowed by additions like the Pantsir.

The Otomatic is one of the biggest examples of Italians getting screwed over by BR placement.
The comparison between 2S38 and Otomatic APFSDS ammo count is an even greater example
@@nevetz845 waaaaaay back some years ago I heard that the ammo count (APFSDS) of OTO was so low due to it being SPAA with the capability of defending itself.
But with 2S38 in game this is a complete Bull* and cover for a nerf of a funny nation.

I just grinded to the top tier of Italian tech trees and I can confirm that anything beyond BR 10.0 is a joke in the Italian Ground tree while the 3 F-104s sitting at 11.0 and 11.3 are just sad.
It's the example of Italian tech tree just being sadly overpowered by any other nation, as Italian, it just makes me disappointed, especially when they make Russian ground and air just op
Fun fact, the APFS-DS is actually used IRL to shoot down missiles while the HE is used for aircraft and drones. That's how precise the darts are. In game, from the beginning, Gijin decided to make its darts shoot everywhere but where you aim and like the Arietes' armor, they refuse to fix it
Oh and the 40mm BOFORS HE-VT somehow does more damage to planes than the OTOMATIC 73mm

High tier is just so broken. The dude rushed, got a single cap, J'd out, and got a helicopter with like 16 ATGMs and instantly started killing people who hadn't even pushed past the first objective yet...

Had 2 dudes with the 300mm Russian truck each spawn kill at least 2 players at the literal start of the match then both got the pe-8 with 5k bomb and wiped the entire team. Great game

The Otomatic is in a much better place than it was a year ago. I got the radar arc fixed, another guy got the IRST fixed, and another guy got the tracer removed. There is currently a closed bug report in the system for removing the APFSDS cap (The name "OTOMATIC APFSDS limit should be removed" because UA-cam isn't fond of external links). TrickZZter, being the good old sub human garbage he is, closed it because he intentionally targets Italian vehicles (I have had multiple bug reports get closed for no reason by him on Italian vehicles and after resubmitting got acknowledged and pushed by other mods no problem).

A change as simple as increasing its sabot capacity would be a huge deal.
I'm sorry but if it doesn't have that many sabot rounds irl, then it shouldn't have them in game either. This thing with 50 sabot rounds would be a menace.

Idk. I completed Russian and German tech trees. Currently grinding US top tier. And the best top-tier tank for me? Definitely M1A2 and M1A1 AIM. BVM is cool, but it gets outperformed by the Abrams easily. Leo suffers due to low ammo count in the turret and horrible thermal. The T80/72s are not that hard to kill. If you possess at least 2 brain cells, you can do it. They love to go boom. Sadly, the teams you get are absolutely disabled and winning is a hard task.
russian bias thing is a fad, people are just really bad at this game and the gaijin moments that happen if and only its a russian tank people scream and cream. like as a german main seeing all the people coping with the fact the leo1 is at a br it should be and not under BRed by 1 is just a reminder that most people suck at this game

This video demonstrates why i take BOTH the otomatic AND the sidam mistral. Having any form of sam sometimes is just better than having to lead kinda low velocity proxy rounds, even when those proxy rounds (used to) deal massive damage

1)instead of 37mm 61-K autocannon it was 45mm 49-K that was adopted into service;
2)the vehicle had the same layout as ZSU-37 of 1946;
3)it had APCR ammo available.
Then yes, would have been a beast even irl.
ZUT-37 was abysmally bad in soviet reports about testing. But Gaijin doesn't care about that.

If i remember correctly, the 2S38 APFSDS round is lighter and has more spalling damage compared to the 76mm APFSDS. The rooikat 76 suffers from this no spall damage too. Always have to snipe ammo or crew mates.
gaijin try not to make broken russian premium overpowered challenge (impossible)
Biggest issue with replacing the Otomatic at top tier is Gaijin refusing to have realistic performances for the Mistrals, or you know, they could try and make the italian vehicles not miss fifty features upon release.
Also italy doesn't have SPAA as they have their SPADA National Defense System and the Aspide launch platform complexes which are towed
we suppose to have DRACO at this point for our Italian top tier SPAA
Good video on the OTOMATIC, I recently went to see the second prototype based on the leopard 1 platform at the OTO Melara museum. Believe it or not the OTO was even worse last year but thankfully the Italian research community managed to finally get the bug reports passed after a lot of delay. If it did get more APFSDS then I think it would be more useful that it is now, if not it needs a BR decrease. A lot of new AA’s have been added since it was introduced and it’s clear that missile AA just do the AA role better.
I don't know if you already know this but when an aircraft is locked by a radar and is flying low to the ground, it'll confuse the radar and make it think the object is a lot lower than it really is. Think of it as the radio waves reflected off the aircraft, off of the ground, and back to the radar dish. That why at 1:15 the green box dips. Is use this a lot in Air Sim to dodge r27s.
How low do you actually fly then? Still catch em when I'm like 30 m above sealevel (Denmark map for example)
and thats why i have irst bound to a key :) it ignores the ground (one time I locked to a heli who was behind a mountain it is broken lmaooooo)

Anyone else here know the OTOMATIC from Wargame: Red Dragon? It's an absolutely apocalyptic death machine there, wiping out infantry, vehicles, and aircraft alike. It's sad to see it reduced to this.

3:10 the APFSDS is limited on the Otomatic because it has a separate ammo rack for it, the APFSDS won't feed properly if placed in the normal HE ammo rack. It's like the Gepard's 80 rounds of self defence APDS, it's an emergency tool if this thing were to ever run into an enemy tank more or less. I just with the 76mm darts (which weigh about as much and move about as fast as 105mm darts) did more damage than reserve tier solid shot, lol.
Though I’ve also heard that the sabot can be used to shoot down missiles IRL, so would it not make sense for it to have more capacity for those kinetic rounds?
@@98765zach I'm not sure if shooting down cruise missiles was part of the design requirement for the Oto, and even if it were, APFSDS isn't necessarily any better suited to that application than it's radio-fused HE rounds. When it comes to shooting down enemy missiles a high volume of fire, like a CIWS system, would be preferred, and those have lower calibres, in the 20-40mm range.
@@jameshodgson3656 I don’t disagree, and I’ll not call it a good idea if true, I was just trying to give a reason I’ve seen stated as to why the APFSDS should be allowed to increase its count, as it would fall inside the options for its main ammo stowage. Kinetic projectiles do get used against missile, but those are often guided missiles themselves, Patriot is a good example

not a great justification for game balance. APDS belt on gepard, capped at 127mm. APDS belt on amx uncapped at 110mm. S238 uncapped at 225mm.
day 55 : you should try the jagdtiger sometime. it's extremly slow, doesn't have a turret, gets uptiers all the time, and most importantly, you'll have to play with german teams. the very definition of suffering.

The worst part about the OTO is the fact that the 12 round APFSDS limit is historical, it has 9 rounds unloaded and 3 in the feeding system.
So Gaijin will never remove that limit even for balancing reasons because there is proof it had a limit.
in the forgotten past before the reign of SAMs OTOMATIC was truly legendary and it was scary to fight it with MBTs, but just don't get me started on the massive gun breech eating my shots.

Since they reworked rwr in the last update the Otomatics tracking radar uses band K which cant be detected by any rwr currently ingame, just like the Pansir.

The thing about everything Italian is that they're not useless if you really, really know what you're doing (and get lucky), but most other trees don't need all that.
I specifically became a hardcore Italy main to grind out the Centauros and OTOMATIC back when it was in its prime. By the time I actually unlocked it, Gaijin had removed every advantage it had once had. It made me very sad.

If ya need a low-tier menace, I'd highly recommend any of the Rank I Swedish light tanks. Their APDS round is something that only they get at such a low BR.

One tank I'd like to see you play that doesn't get nearly enough love is the charioteer. Especially now that there are 2 of them in different trees in the game. Using mostly AP esp. in downtiers is great fun.

I grinded the Italian tech tree specifically to get the oto and had a blast playing. It felt nice playing a AA that could actually counter CAS effectively. Needless to say, i lost all motivation when they started nerfing it

I feel your sanity loss on SPAA woes, you are not alone.
Playing the PGZ-04A, failing to lock Helicopters sub 2.5km in the open air with its MANPADS is pure suffering. Radar isn't bad, but those MANPADS are absolute suffering when they fail to lock on a stationary target for absolutely no reason. The quad cannons are very nice, but the ~2km self destruct on the HE has been a slight problem occasionally.

You missed the part where the KA-50s out-range it. It is also a free kill for drones.
An AA that gets hard countered by the most common AA threats.
Actually i find that the drones are the only things that i can relayably kill in the thing, with the normal radar lock (not the IRST) you can lock and shoot at them while outside their range (up to 10km) they are slow and tipically do not manouver, the only problem is that EVERYTHING that manouvers is a hard counter to the otomatic.
Not saying that the otomatic is a good spaa btw, situational at best, even the sidam mistral is a way better option to support your team against the cas spam at low range
There are two ways to fix the Oto
1- Increase it's APFSDS Count, and fix it's APFSDS Accuracy
2- Decrease the Oto's BR to 9.7, It's armor and Armaments would still be Modest at that tier as it will still be fighting tanks with solid armor, it wouldn't have too much AT capabilities, and it won't have to compete with super long-range missile platforms.
The Otomagic is probably one of the most heavily neutered vehicles in the game compared to how it was when they added it. First they limited it to only 12 rounds of APFSDS, then they bumped it up in BR on three sperate occasions until it was 11.3 from its original 9.0, at some point they replaced the APHE with SAP shells with worse performance, and they also at some point absolutely GIMPED the performance of any APFSDS shell under 100mm in size. That's not even including RWR, flares/chaff, CCIP bombs/rockets, and guided munitions being added to planes in the meantime as well.
This was one of the vehicles I was looking forward to getting when I first downloaded the game, but in addition to the awful grind, the state of this thing has left me totally disinterested.
