Heat 7 of the 1976 World Final when Peter Collins came up against British Champion Malcolm Simmons, England team mate John Louis and Jerzy Rembas of Poland
Poole Pirates was my team in the 70's and to have Simmo as captain was a dream come true. I remember this so well.. loved PC but the fact that he pipped Simmo to the crown was hard to swallow. To this day if I'm successfully weaving past pedestrians in busy city centres I still find myself saying "Peter Collins goes round the outside"!
If ever a speedway rider was in unstoppable form it was Peter on this day, i know he came second to Ivan in his final race but already had the title sewn up, absolutely breathtaking....
Wow what memories !!!!!!! Was at that Final, now so many years ago, and it was enthralling from beginning to end. Also Poland at that time required a visa to be able to visit as was still part of the Russian East European Block. Travelled on a chartered train full of British supporters acroos Europe and on to Katowice. As said enthralling from many aspects, first time ion Poland, East Berlin, and of course notwithstanding watch PC take the goods on the day. One day cliff hangers still hard to forget and love............... Have been to Poland many times since, and just wish we could see the same sort of crowds that they manage to pull in on a regular basis, Thanks for the post Martyn, and is this available as a full transmission from the era, presume ITV, and of course with the redoubtable Dave Lanning on commentary
