I’m seeing a pattern here. Matt seems to touch hot stuff and Paul gets his fingers in the way. Makes think of the song lyric, “Old enough to know what’s right and young enough not to do it.” Still two of the best channels on UA-cam. Keep doing what you do!

It just wouldn't be the same watching Paul do things the safe way. ie: drilling while holding the drilled piece in his fingers while holding it on top of the drill press vice. So much easier and faster that chucking that drilled piece in the vice. LOL! So much more entertaining when the drill grabs the drilled piece. You can tell I have done that, can't you?

@@garychristison5773 If you grew up in the country, chances are that you learned to drive on probably a tractor in the fields, followed by a 21/2 ton Truck hauling hay or some other farm product. Compared to some of those trucks that Studebaker probably feel like power steering.
I worked with a woman engineer who got her chops driving a harvester (peas, no less) as a summer job; she said she won out over her male cohort because she didn't flip it on the hillsides. Gotta love a farm girl.
Those weren't manual steering they had Armstrong power steering

That looked like one of those deals where I see white spots and sit down a minute or two.
Old iron demands it's pound of flesh. Those old Internationals didn't steer well or stop well, which is why they used a motor that didn't go fast and a deep gear ratio.

When I watched the opening scene, I was overwhelmed by a quote I heard in a truck stop. " When I see a son look at his father in admiration, I KNOW that man is doing something wright. "
As a truck mech.. I have found that more cooling fins don't necessarily mean better cooling, sometimes you need to slow the flow to make it cool better . But with poor flow , air flow that also makes a difference . Once again I love watching you folks!!!!

It’s a heat damper. It’s closed when the engine is warming up to force hot exhaust through the intake manifold heat stove for the carb choke.
Makes the choke warm up quickly.

It’s great to see how well you and Matt and all your friends get along .I’m getting on in years now so my days of messing in the garage are pretty well limited to replacing pads and rotors on my van. I like your show because back when I took my mechanics course we learned how to make do with what we had so we fixed or made new parts ourselves. Never bought new if we could make it ourselves.So ,keep up the great videos; and I’ll keep watching from my easy chair here in Nova Scotia. Bubby.
Found your channel via Matt’s Off-Road Recovery. I couldn’t stop smiling when you and Michelle test drove the IH! Looks like you were both having a hoot. My Dad used to have a shop back in the day so brought back lots of memories of the old 55 Chevy he bought from old farmer for $600 and pulled it out of a grove of trees and fixed up and got ‘r running. Changed out rear diff with high speed rear end. My brothers drove it 700 miles from South Dakota to Denver to see our sisters. Only had to adjust a brake hanging up a bit otherwise no issues.
This and Matt's off road recovery are the best things to watch on UA-cam...

When I was a kid there was an auto shop near us like Paul's, just like it. Old men sitting around watching, snoozing but helping when someone needed it. I remember asking one of them what spark plugs to put in my 327 and he taught me how to relate the numbers on the plug to the heat and when to use what. Probably mucho knowledge sitting around there.
As an old Scout Corn Binder fanatic I honed many of my fabrication skills swapping in Chevy and Mopar engines and transmissions and different t-cases back in my hay days. Also fabricating 3 and 4 link suspensions which in those days were a lot of trail and error episodes. My hats of to you for your fabrication skills and ingenuity on your builds and keeping an old Binder alive. ROCK ON!

I'M HOPING MY SON- IN- LAW WILL DRIVE IT BACK TO L.A. someday. My mother drove my brother , sister and I back to Arkansas in 1944 shortly after my dad passed.
I enjoy your channel so much, I’m a retired Welder/Pipefitter/Fabricator of 37 years in a Machine/ Fab shop plus in the field also! I love watching Paul fab brackets and everything else he builds, I can’t do any major fab jobs anymore because of my health issues! Too many jobs in bad positions and carrying too much heavy stuff has taken its toll on my body, after several surgeries and hopefully next year I’ll be able to get both shoulders repaired because of torn rotator cuffs ! Anyway I love your channel and see Paul doing a lot of just what I did on the job before they had our shop certified for code vessels and then it got too different with quality control and just too many rules and paperwork! I love old school fabrication and I really like blacksmith work too! I started making hunting knives and like was going good until last year I had a hip replacement and if that wasn’t enough to mess up my year, we had two hurricanes hit Lake Charles back to back within 6 weeks of each other! That put a damper on my projects for a while but I found your channel and it takes the place of my enjoyment for fabrication! I also watch Matt’s recovery channel too and enjoy watching the recoveries especially when Paul goes and helps out! Paul, when I built that 396 that was in that T bucket that I showed you, I also put in some zinc additive in my oil. I drove it for 2,500 miles, and I was going to put an air-gap intake manifold on it, and since a friend told me that I should paint the engine black to match the frame, I pulled the engine out to paint it and put the manifold on it. I did not like the look of the cam, so I removed it and looked closer. It was FLAT!!! So, I rebuilt the engine AGAIN. Honed the block, blew out all of the oil passages, new camshaft and lifters. New mains and rods new oil pump, just basically starting over from scratch. My engine rebuilder had a crate motor take out of a cam out of a 427. He had to machine a grove in the rear bearing for oil, but it fit right in and works fine.
I did some research and found out about Amsoil. They make an oil called Z Rod. It has all of the zinc and other additives that these older motors need. I have since put on 11,000 miles on it since then, and it runs great. I put a 1,000 miles on it when I brought it down to meet you. I have since changed all of my vehicles over to Amsoil. Even my Dodge Cummins pickup.
You should take a look at Amsoil. It is good stuff, and they will have it delivered to your door if you want. I am sure that there are some dealers down there for Amsoil. I buy it a case at a time. It is spendy, but so is rebuilding a rebuilt engine AGAIN!

I think his battery was low but especially with aluminum wheels you check them with a lug wrench and recheck them every couple hrs

😄 Great driving Michelle. Two pumps for the brake, cover the hole for exhaust, manual steering and floor shiftin'... that's like an old VW we had back in the 80's!! Cold weather required scraping the INSIDE of the windshield on that thing & no reverse!! Lol

Two things…
The way the brakes were adjusted on the old truck is tighten the adjustment as you turn the wheel till you can no longer turn the wheel by hand.the were made that way as you drive the drum heats up and expands away from the shoes. The heat in the drums also drys them if they get wet driving in rain or water.
Second trick for steering them is pull the side of the wheel toward you hand over hand like a rope to turn easier.
My first truck was a 1962 Chevy C30 with the same basic brakes and steering and I drove it all over for years and loved it. Working on a restoration of it now though with a new cab as the old one had major rust problems in the entire roof and pillars.

No good deed goes unpunished. I was helping my nephew fix a lawn mower and managed to put my thumb right on the hot muffler. Instant meat cookage.....and took weeks to heal. That felt wonderful. Felt my pulse in it like you did.
Double clutch, double pump brakes... not to shabby really. I bet when you are as old as this sweet thang, yeah, you'll be a bit stiff in the joints as well. :D She's a beauty! Well done all.
I learned to drive in one just like that. Ours had a pickup bed though. I was 8 years old at the time. wasn't hardly strong enough to steer it. My grandmother and I would take it about tree miles to wheat we had a big garden in one of our fields. Those were truly the good ole days. Oh the memories.

I had a 46 K1 in the 60s that had a 3 speed on the column. It was geared really low- 60ish was the max speed. The wheel cylinders had two different bore sizes. I read years later the brakes were from early Fords and International bought the rights to use them. I guess that would be a good way for a small company to get into the hydraulic brake game. I thought at the time how a small block would be a great swap so I am glad that you showed it was possible for a home mechanic to do.

I was on Nellis AFB auto hobby Las Vegas Nevada. I needed a new fuel pump. Very common for this place. I used the brake rotor hot spot disc clean up. It worked.

I use Amsoil zrod oil in all my old chevys. It has a lot of zinc in it as well as a rust preventative for when you store them all winter or whatever. Never had a problem

Some rack and pinion steering and a Ford 9 inch all from a crown vic and it would be a sweet little rat rod probably have to soften the suspension a touch too but for a parade vehicle I hope he built a fan shroud to help that little 4 blade fan keep the V8 cool while creeping and stopping through the parade
I spotted those Sport King's on the Willy's. Best tires I ever had on my CJ-7! Had them on my 79 Bronco as well. Didn't even have to use 4 wheel drive in an Ontario winter!

Great video ya'll!! Paul you amaze me when watchin you work and fabricate stuff the clutch assembly an motor mount that receiver hitch was awesome. That is a cool old truck love the big fenders and the small cab that engine sounds great. Michelle you did a heck of a job drivin it. I have been a shade tree mechanic for 50 year's I could work on the older stuff 60s 70s but I hate all these electronic stuff don't know how to work on them love to have older 60s vehicle again to drive. It is great to see you investing in your son like this. I didn't have my dad around to do this, but the man I now call dad and have for almost 40 years invested in me. I then was able to invest in my son and daughter this way. My son is now an engineer who earns his living turning wrenches on multi million dollar machines. Keep up the great work. You are such a blessing to your family.

I owned a KB-1 that used to be an Idaho Bell telephone truck back in 1976. I drove it across Washington State from east to west when I graduated from college. It would do about 50 miles per hour but that was about it.

my old 71 chevy pick up had a steering box no power steering .. there was a bolt with a jam nut you could tighten up to take out slop in the steering
I think Michelle makes a lot of the videos 10x better. She is always funny and herself and the fact she doesn’t let the dumb comments bother her makes me more of a fan!!
