      Just wanted to say that my original style shirt is extremely soft and comfortable. (Not and paid endorsement). It has quickly gone to the top of my shirt rotation and I always look forward to the Fab Rats shirt day. Thank you, I was not expecting such a great shirt, just wanted something from one of my favorite channels and ended up getting a favorite shirt. Also, I have never posted a compliment about the quality of a shirt before so this is a first.

    Long time viewer, First time commenter. I was watching how you heat the bearings to slide them right on and wanted to tell you that most of these bearings are made of 52100 high carbon steel. They are hardened and tempered to a specific rockwell hardness. Heating them to a brown or straw color definately changes the heat treated hardness of the steel making them softer. I don't know if that affects there use or wear at all not my area of expertise. I am a knifemaker and can see by the color whats happening to the steel. You may want to look into it. Having said all that I absolutely love your video's and the work you do. Keep it up and best wishes to you and the family!

      Sharp eye! I'm a machinist. Metal changing colors from heat means you're changing the temper of the metal. Its better to avoid that. I might use a torch to get things apart. However, I'm no metallurgist.
      I like using a cheap hot plate and or a freezer to install plain bearings and bushings on my own 'junk'. At both NASA and United Airlines we used liquid nitrogen and controlled ovens to install lots of bearings. Fun stuff!

    • @rollinrat4850
      @rollinrat4850 3 роки тому +1

      @@mikeclausen7831 250 degrees isn't getting metal very hot. That fact is pretty surprising! I would guess axle components might get hotter in operation especially braking.
      We heat custom made cutting tools from tool steel sometimes to full cherry red , quench it in oil then temper it with a torch until it gets that straw brown color. But that's for cutting tools that are hard and fairly brittle. They need to hold a cutting edge. Not fine bearings, they're supposed to last far longer!

    "I just made it hard"! No truer statement has ever been made. I am delighted to see someone else has the same luck/curse that I have. Now I don't feel like I am alone with this luck/curse.
    When I worked in the field repairing heavy equipment, many times I had to have more parts brought to me. Sometimes I was 3 hours away from the shop. That is just the nature of repairing in the field. Since you are an hour away from your parts store, you might as well be in the field. LOL
    If I had to order a special seal to do a job, I would always order an extra one. If it was a special order, I would order 2 extra. I could always return it to the parts department if I did not need it. The old saying, "It is much better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it," is soooooo true.

I've had for about a year and after 40 surgeries on my body and taking my time I've done some things to it, but the whole suspension and frame rail is rusted. The frustration part is that when I does the death wobble, because there are 3 loose ball joints on the front left side, I'll have to junk it. Then I'll be back to not having a vehicle. It is a blessing I've had another vehicle to drive, but.... I'm glad your able to do so much to vehicles and have your knowledge. You make it look easy and you all have fun doing it. God Bless

    Paul, I have tell ya, it’s pleasing just to watch you operate. You’ve obviously done a lot of the work you show on your channel, but you dumb it down for us simpletons. Amazing work, you make it look easy, but it can’t be, because of all the thousands of inch that has to be taken into consideration, things don’t always just “fall into place”, as you so eloquently say… it takes expertise. My friend your rebuild of Matt’s Morrvair transmission was a thing of beauty. Keep up the great work. You’re obviously very talented, to do the work you do, and have it come out “perfect”. Which it must be if it’s gonna hold up… I’ll keep watching…amazing stuff…okay, so I wondered if things go awry on occasion and turns out they do, so guess what … you’re human. Can I add one more aspect to your channel, and may I give Matt’s channel the same compliment… no language. Off color I mean. I shared your channel with my grandson, whose getting into welding, metal shop and cars… he’s doesn’t need to hear a bunch of swear words, and he can see how the professionals operate and hopefully get him on the right track… by the way.. nothing wrong with you showing how a mistake is made, with the beating I mean, we can learn too. Love your channel..Kevin

      Hell yes, the bearing is way over sized , under loaded and runs at extremely low speed in an oil bath.
      Yea, it will outlast several sets of tyres the seal and probably the axle it’s sitting on.
      Is it damaged?
      Quite possibly, at that temperature the surface hardening may have lost a significant percentage of its effectiveness.

TBH if you have the money to start this project with a newish jeep I'd go with the locker too, but just like in my case 15 years ago, the payments might be inching into his upgrade budget. LSDs for a 44 might have a reasonable secondary market price ready to help pay for the upgrade after the budget has some relief. 900 for an OX 🐂 😋 👀 Which I'm obviously a little biased towards.
