Those old pickups from that era are certainly a big part of the magic of this era of basses. The fingerboard, the neck carve, and the choices of wood also come into play. They tend to be pretty consistent too. I have had many, and they all seem to be about the same. After '63, you would have to find a "good one" out of a sea of mediocre ones.
