In a veterinary hospital, we see many cats lay in the litter box we give them instead of the bed. It's a really scary place, and the only way they can cope is by surrounding themselves with their own scent (think of it like their only reminder of home). Not all cats do it, but it's very common.
If your pet ever needs to spend a night at the vet for any reason, send them with a blanket or two from home. Just make it a cheap one because when we change their bedding it'll probably get lost in mountains of laundry. But they'll treasure it until then.

We had a neighbor's cat that liked to climb in through our windows and hang out with us for a few hours. One time, I took a shower and then prepared for bed. I like to put on perfume before going to sleep to leave a nice scent on my sheets. So I get dressed, put on perfume, and lay down. The cat comes by, climbs onto my bed, and starts rubbing her face on my arm, intentionally drooling on my sleeve. She didn't let off until she thought he got enough saliva on me. I could feel her hatred on my perfume in every gesture she made.

Same here! I live in an apartment and the neighborhood cats would walk by (many not fixed😝) and my girl (fixed) would "chat" with them. But what I did different so I wouldn't see the box, YET have it work for her is in the living room I put a short table under the window, have the box on a plastic runner (to catch the litter) and cover the table with a tablecloth and on the table I put cat friendly plants. ❤🐱 She also likes to sit on the table to look outside.

Tip for making your new cat more comfortable:
When you pick up your new cat at the shelter, ask them if you can have the blanket, bed, or toy that the cat loves. Whether you give them some in exchange or they give it to you for free, they will probably agree.

Speaking of litter boxes, I adopted 3 adult cats separately, and it turned out they did not get along. They were peeing all over the place. Eventually, I thought to add more litter boxes (originally just had 1). Fast forward a couple months, I ended up with 7 litter boxes for 3 cats. Hey, it totally worked. I had to clean them daily, but it totally worked and I could keep all of them then. We were at our wits end but, yay, after this, peace reigned. For a while anyway. 😂

The litter box thing confuses me so much, especially when your cat is peeing/pooping on the floors. Like, sure, the litter box is ugly, but what's worse is coming home every day to your living room to find pee soaked into the carpets and rugs, or your hardwood floor lifting because your cat has peed there so often. Between cleaning pee off the floor and dealing with an ugly litter box, it's pretty obvious what the best choice is for you and your cat.

I've never had litter box issues personally, but I know friends who have had issues with their cats peeing outside of the box, and if it's not a physical or behavioural issue, I've recommended putting a litter box where they tend to pee. 5/10 will at least try it, while the other 5/10 won't even consider it because that would mean having a litter box out in the open.

My beloved kitty used to do this when she started being ill, she had urinary tract infection and spread to kidney and it was a sign for me to let me know she wasn't feeling well. Jackson Galaxy hi Jackson! What's your take on the feliway type products the pheromones plug in thing? I'm adopting a new cat today and was recommended to buy one or two to help the introduction of the new cat to the resident cat, but I read a lot of negative reviews regarding the side effects that it gives to cats so I'm thinking to not buy it at the moment. Is pheromone (this artificial type) harmful? I'd really like your opinion!
Also, once I come home with the new baby I will start the proper introduction process with the base camp and site swapping and eating 6 ft on either side of door. I have 100% trust in your expertise and will follow your teachings.

I have ALOT of cats. 13 at the moment. One special baby Dusk, has urinary tract problems. I had been working with her to stop peeing literally everywhere. Mainly on my bed and many times me. I know it's more than the urinary issue causing her to pee in the unusual places. I have many litter boxes but I still didn't have enough. I placed 2 more boxes in my house. In the two most important areas for her. The kitchen and my bedroom. I had to cover my bed and other areas she frequent with puppy pads. While giving her treatment for her urinary problem, I started with the litter box near and on top of of the pads. I gradually reduced the pads and moved the litter boxes near by but in a more suitable area for me and her. She had finally stopped peeing everywhere and most importantly stopped peeing on my bed. Almost instantly when I added the litter boxes her behavior improved and my other fur babies calmed down and there was less chasing and blocking and marking. Jackson is sooooo right. I can not believe the difference and improvement from just adding more litter boxes!!!

Always have at least 1 more box than the number of cats you have. The large Rubbermaid or Sterlite storage boxes are the best litterboxes. Lots of room and deep for scratching and digging. You do not want the pee to wind up on the bottom of the box (where it sits and stinks). You want to be able to scoop out the pee completely. Scoop every day. Put in fresh litter. Comb the litter flat so that you can tell at a glance when a box has been used. Do not cover the litterbox.

My cat was very stressed in the shelter and on the long car ride home. We were fully expecting him to immediately hide in the basecamp.
The first thing he did was burst out of the carrier and scent mark/rub against every object in the room, including us humans! It was very sweet to see. For the first week or so, he was territorial over every object that touched the floor and phantom spraying around, now he is more confident and has really calmed down.
He was definitely happy to be out of the crowded shelter. It was a small place with very few resources. He was confined to a small kennel bc he didn't get along with other cats. Meanwhile there were probably 20+ cats freely moving in the room, dogs constantly barking in a different room. They were definitely doing their best but in over their head.

My hubby also has a sensitive nose. He hates the smell of cat litter and has always wanted to put the litter box out in the garage, which I objected to. If we did that, the cat would think he lives in the garage and not with us. It took me quite some time to find out that the Arm and Hammer cat litter is really the best. It doesn't seem to have a lot of odor, but at the same time, it keeps the cat odor down. It's also light enough that my senior cat loved it for the ease of her being able to push it around. But the litter doesn't fly around or cause dust either. So that plus a gigantic high sided liter box seems to have done the trick.

Yesterday my cat had surgery and when we came home, I felt I had to take his tree away from him because he was so wobbly from the drugs and I didn't want him to misjudge a leap and hurt himself. He sat in the spot where his tree used to be and stared at me (with highly dilated pupils) and gave me such cranky faces! Oh yes, the tree is 6' tall and is in the middle of my living room...literally in the middle of the room. I got this cat in March, minutes before COVID lockdown, and the tree came with him. He's 5 yrs old, a grown up. At the time, I didn't care where the tree was as long as he wasn't able to get on the mantle from it. I figured I could sort it out later. Turns out, that's where he likes his tree and, really, I don't care all that much.
PS...one day I came home from the barn and, after riding and roughing it up with three dogs, removed my breeches and they landed on the floor. Felix peed on them. He's never peed on anything else, just those. Message heard!

I love the pine. Smells like a tree not a cat plus no silica/clay dust for my cat to breathe. First natural litter was compressed newspaper pellets- At first he wasn't happy with the extra effort in moving it around but 6 months of that switched to pine. He would probably use wood stove pellets in a pinch now he's so good about it.

Cats are actually pretty intuitive pets to have. If you just treat them like an individual then its easy to have them. The only thing that I feel is confusing about cats is their eyes and when they roll over to show their belly. Big pupils are very cute and for human, it naturally doesn't come off as negative. And for the belly thing, we usually assume that means "touch my belly". But its the cat usually saying "I'm vulnerable." But everything else is so straight forward.

@@WhatIsItAboutThem I treat all my pets as individuals, how couldn't you? They all have such personalities! My youngest cat usually won't eat his food unless he goes through a ritual. First he has to see his big brother eating, then a belly rub on his favourite rug (and it is a belly rub he's after), finished with me telling him how much of a good boy he is. This last bit is because he gets distracted easily.....he has ADD.

Giving my single cat 2 liter boxes has been an amazing thing to learn. ( Best cat advice ever!) The clean up is easier and the smells are lesser just because my cat likes to spread out his business. Normally it takes like two minutes of my time to scoop the cat boxes and with the new clumping litter, litter lasts much longer. I know a lot of people gripe about the space two boxes take up, but it is worth it! So rule of thumb 2 cat boxes for 1 cat and add a cat box for each additional cat. I wish I knew the things I've learned from Jackson back in the 90's.

We adopted 2 kittens a few years ago and they had their first fight in June. A play fight that got out of control. Our happy human / feline family turned upside down. Of course I bought Jackson’s book, immediately and have been slowly re-introducing the cats again. We thought we were doing great with four litter boxes in the laundry. Wrong. Didn’t know they would see four together as one. We now have a little box in the kitchen. One in the living room. One in our bathroom and one in our spare room. Gone are all the scented candles and house never smells.

I let my cat roll around in them before we left, then when I got to the new place I basically scattered my clothes all around the house. I was in quarantine when I arrived so I had my husband pick up a literal bucket full of new toys and he was in heaven! New things that he can make his own made him so happy! Honestly even something as simple as that helped make him comfortable and confident in the apartment after a week vs the month it took for him to get comfortable last time we moved. Scoop and replace litter until the "clean" litter smells bad. You then dump that "clean" litter and just refill with fresh litter. Have never had a problem with my 14yr old and don't think I've ever washed her box. Closest thing I've done to washing it was to rinse with plain water, but usually only if its been spaced for a few days (like I went on a couple days vacation and my sister watched her lol)

She has a litter box there, my resident cat has her litter box outside the base camp. After a month, with me spending time in each space, and using your techniques of site swapping, synchronous feeding, eat-pray-love, etc., the door to base camp is open. The cats are not buddies but neither are they trying to kill each other! And I have been surprised and glad to see that they frequently use each other's litter boxes! Even though they still hiss at each other, I hope this means they do or will see each other as part of the same community.

We have had her for 2 months - adopted from a Veterinary Hospital who was trying to find her forever home. She has adjusted nicely, although her are some topics that maybe you can address, or can lead me to your videos that address these issues: How to get your cat to rub your legs more; How to get your cat to come and sit in your lap; How to get your cat to not run (saying - "let's go play with my toys now") when you just want to pick her up. *Note: Our tripawd has always purred, and rolled over once we get her calm, but she won't take the extra step to sit on the couch or chair with one of us. I use a natural unscented litter made from recycled paper. It's non-toxic, dust free, easy to carry home, the paper absorbs urine amazingly well, it's soft on kitty paws and environmentally friendly. Also cheap. I highly recommend!!! I also can't smell the cat urine as much with the paper litter as I did when I had the classic form of litter. And because of paper absorbing water so well the box stays dry so there's no need for extra wiping or cleaning the box. I scoop once a day and there is no smell at all. No need for scented litter or air freshener. IF it would smell (like it did when he was sick) I just put much less litter in the box and instead of scooping after he went I emptied it all out and wiped down the box with just water and paper towels, then refilled with new litter. Wiping with water and drying with paper towels removes any smell that we as humans can smell, but it keeps the scent for the cat. ❤️ 😺 Just a tip. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ (Another reason to use paper litter is that normal litter has dust that can damage the cat's lungs when they dig around in it. Just something to consider. That's the main reason I switched.) ❤️

Hi Jackson! Thanks for these videos. We're adopting a 9-year-old cat who's 5 previous homes have abandoned her because of issues with marking around the house. I'm committed to making this her forever home and giving her the best life possible so I'm studying these videos at the moment. Wish me luck!

I broke up with my partner and the cat stayed with him. Last I heard she's very happy, they live in the same apartment, and most of the problems have stopped. She isn't allowed to sleep on the bed because she still pees there but everywhere else it has stopped. She's 11 years old now and enjoying retirement 😊

I have had such luck letting the box alone, cleaning out the waste twice a day and refreshing with scentless fine clay so it's nice and deep. The box hasn't "felt" dirty in years! Thank you for validating my instinct on this one!

I love your dedication to cats. Few things are as beautiful as a cat. I am a human cat, as I suspect you are too, Jackson. We are sensitive and independent, and we are loving.

Scent-marking or absorbing could work vs soaking. 😺 I hope Cat Cave resumes soon... Caturdays were more fun when you invited us "in".💜

My kitty always cries at me when I come out of the shower. I always thought she was complaining that all her hard scent laying work had just been undone, and after watching this I really believe it. At least now I know the best thing to do is let her start all over immediately 😂

I revisit these videos often, I’m always trying to improve the ways I interact with my 2 cats. Because of JG my 2 cats have access to a minimum of 3 litter boxes at all times, and although I’ve been watching, sharing and proselytizing these wholeheartedly for years, I do still need reminding. Up until today I had forgotten that I need to spread the boxes out, they are currently all in eyeshot of each other.

Thank you for your advice Jackson, I've done as much as I can and I'm constantly adjusting and learning with the two new girls I got a week ago. Because of your advice, they're confident and happy, and I've had no issues with things like excessive scratching, peeing, or spraying around the house. As long as it's scooped regularly, the smell doesn't stick so I've got the trays in the living room, out and proud as it were. If my guests don't like it, tough! The cats come first.

This video lets me know that i am doing everything right by Cubby to build his confidence. This is critical because it was so shattered after his first year of life was spent being tormented by his first owner.
Since he adopted me (no joke, and long story), he has had this obsession with marking me immediately after I get out of the shower. It was through watching your videos that let me know that this is a sign of affection and not just him being a pest. I encourage him now to wait until I am done drying off because no one likes wet cat hair on them when they are fresh out of the shower. So, while I towel off we have a chat about how much he loves his mommy and how he's gonna make sure that all the other kitties know that I'm his mommy and not theirs. He's a good boy and the joy of our life as my husband and I have no children.
PS-thank you for your sign of approval of Armarkat cat trees. This made it easier to select one among so many. He's been a different baby since getting one a couple of years ago.

Could you PLEASE make a video about the laser pointer debate?? Me and my bf argue back and forth. I think it's good because it's the ONLY thing that gets her running and jumping at full speed. He thinks it's damaging because she's "stressed"... please clear this up, I'm begging you

Hi, I’m moving about 2000km to a new home. I have 1 kitty 6 years old. How do I ensure the car trip is manageable for her ? Also my new place has cats next door how do I settle her in, with the least stress ? I will be catafying, of course ! We are moving in 10 days. I have trained her with the carrier and she is ok with that. Finally trained her to wear a collar but don’t see harness acceptance anytime soon. Regards Tracy, Cape Town South Africa

I think it will depend on the cat. I have had cats that travelled loose in a car and loved it I have also had cats that went catatonic and lost fur being driven a few miles. Cats are individuals, just like us. You should know the answer. Because you know your cat. Just make the journey as stress free as you can. If she has never been in a car before take her for a Very short ride and see how she reacts .Some cats love it, some cats hate it, some cats go catatonic! Lol. That should help you. know how to transport her. When you get there, keep her in for a few days, then leave a safe window open. Keep an eye on her, as much as you can but let her do it. Cats have their own social groups and worlds, and are more adaptable than humans. They have to be.

Look for Feliway Diffusers or spray at Pet Smart. The spray can be used in your car and the diffuser at your new home. It makes your cat feel like they are in their own territory in new spaces. I use it when I travel with my cat, both in her travel crate and in the hotel room.

I used blankets that had my cats furr on it when I moved him across the country where I live I showed him that he had many places of his scent. Also may not be agreeable to you but sprinkling loos cat hair on the floors of you new place will help too. Doesn't have to stay there forever but good with the scent saturation in the house.

Thank you so much, Jackson, for every little solution that made Our little Tiger the Biggest Mojito CAT Ever! And I am serious about it!
My husband and I recently bought an appartment. It was the first time for Our Sammy to move out of his previous castle. Let me tell you about his old place. We rescued him when he was 12 days. And ever since then your advices are the ones I've always followed. He wanted to bite-I gave him a bottle sock(which is now his wife). He was introduced to many different people including kids :) He was travelling long diatance when he was 3 weeks old and he still loves being in a car. His first litter box was put right in the center corner of the living room. He got used to it from the very first time yay. After a few months he got another litter right next to the baby one. We wash it like once in 6 or more moths. I made him lots of toys and I am still playing with him every single day. He was really crazy and full of enery and of course we had times when he had bad behaviour such as scraching the couch, digging into plants, pulling things from the table...I had to be bad and discipline him with a pointing finger or a flip flop :D Water drops are the Best cat removal :) So he grew up as a very loved cat and a very good one as well. He sprayed his territory (before spaying) just once - at the front door. I immediately put one of his litter there for 3 months and he was only spraying in there till the spaying.
Sooo when the time came and we moved out his New home was full of his toys, scrachers, blankets, carpet, tunnel and so on. But most important - with us. Since we work from home we are together all the time. He got used to the New place as soon as he stepped into it. Now his boxes are in the living room as well. Actually we have electric freshners even before we got him. He doesn't seem to be botherd by them, probably because of his scent soackers everywhere. He loves being with others and being the centre of attention. He doesn't like getting petted by other than us, but he is still very polite to Our guests.
I love my cat so much, and I know that he is so adorable, because of your advices and your help.
Thank you for being here for us, Jackson!
