Lady Gyokuyou at the end gets to have rest at night because the Emperor isn't visiting her all the time. The burden is now shoulder between the two consorts Gyokuyou and Lihua. MaoMao is laughing because she knows the secret technique she told Lihua about is working.
what maomao told lihua was a technique to pleasure a man using her chest, hence lihua getting flustered and maomao mentioning how her own chest isn't large enough to use said method
Maomao grew up among the people, in the prostitutes' neighborhood and when she finds herself in the emperor's concubine neighborhood, she discovers a new world that is finally not so far from her own. These talents are useful because she has already encountered these problems. Moreover, she does not let herself be deceived by appearances.The more she evolves in this world apart, the more she will discover hidden truths, conspiracies..... But what's important is that she's a breath of fresh air in this world

I really do love Mao Mao. A lot of really intelligent characters get portrayed as cold and uncaring. I like that Mao Mao isn't like that. She's really compassionate and wants everyone to be healthy and happy. We saw it in her relief when she saw the princess had recovered, and I feel like it shows through her anger at them for ignoring the warnings here too.
They visually represent the technique with the tassels in the flashback.
I suspect Maomao's treatment of the makeup lady was based on the manager of the brothel she came from. Substance abuse and risky behavior could be lethal for someone working in a pleasure district, and that form of harsh punishment to keep the girls safe would've been quite normal for the time period. She's lucky to have avoided much worse

so glad you re watching it, one of my favorite manga, and the adaptation is amazing, Characterization is great, and Maomao is to me, one of the best main female ever.. Please keep in mind all details, and all the different stories are like dots, that will link at some point. Enjoy, it's amazing , trust me !

it is not really a "friendship" you see this often in historical dramas, the servants are extremely loyal to the person their serving, tending to their every need, even commiting crimes and crying when their dead...it was just the culture at the time period ^^
and yes the servants did know the stuff was banned but she just wanted to make her pretty, doing it the wrong way.
