Lomita apartment building bursts into flames

- A massive apartment building in Lomita went up in flames Saturday. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

We lost our apartment in 2006. Unlike this one, which started on a second floor, our started on a third floor. There were over twenty of us that lost our apartments that January morning. Have a fire plan in place for your family! Make sure your smoke detectors work. If you rent, make sure you have renter's insurance. We had our first check within 24 hours. The Red Cross can only do so much to help the displaced.... Praying for all involved, and the safety of the firefighters. They are truly heroes.

An apartment fire should not spread like that in 2024.
Well, this condo complex was built in the same year the Champlain Towers in Miami were. Reagan years so profit, profit, profit over safety and common sense.
It is an older building and may not have a sprinkler system, and it not going as fast as you think the walls between you and your neighbor are only 20 minutes that why you need to get out!

No it should not but this was built 10 plus years ago, fire building codes were different than today which are stringent...simply they may not have had sprinklers due to properties height, they may not have fire rated materials designed into the structure separating the units in the ceiling cavity (evident in the video by the spread was not built) they would need to have basic fire safety measures alarms, fire doors, stairwell, exit signs evacuation signs, hydrants, emergency lighting ... its a very grey area that is long overdue for a revamp esp since a homes contents fuel loading has dramatically increased with different materials to10 years ago, new types of plastic, synthetics, man made wood etc

Would be interesting to know if the roof void passed along the entire building without hindrance to fire, it seems to be moving easily between flats along the top.

The importance of renters insurance & good documentation of belongings can’t be overstated. Safety deposit box or fire safe in apartment box should be a priority. You never know when this will/could happen and the insurance will at least help with you getting back on your feet. Sad situation for all.

What was the problem with no water? it took a long time to start putting out with fire fighters standing there with limp hoses.

Fire spreads quickly in attics of apartments/condos when building codes; don’t require developers to install fire walls, up to the roof line.

Not apartments, those are condos. I saw units for sale years ago when I went online to find out where this was.

highly doubt it.. heard it started on top floor, cuz i thought at first.. r there fields around there, but looks like the cemetary edges the south, street to north.., not sure what's west, either parking lot for church... the wind was blowing to the west. squatters in pv? never heard of that.

What disgrace, no manpower. Where are the trench cuts on the roof. Obviously, fire is in the cockloft. Its going to run across the roof and ceiling. But they finally did a trench cut b side to save other wing.
