I played the Madrigal as part of my senior recital in college. Some of the higher level pieces were assigned for me as early as freshman year. I played the Madrigal as a dedication to my sister who had passed away unexpectedly a few months before the recital. While the Madrigal looks easy it requires some drastic changes in tone color throughout the piece. To me, the changes in tempo and color represented the chaotic emotions of celebrating the life of a loved one while processing the deep suffering of grief. The history behind the piece is intense. The notes and rhythms are relatively easy but there's more art than one might expect. The other pieces in my program were seemingly more impressive and much more technical but the Madrigal was by far my most expressive and artistic performance up to that point in my studies.
The short section played here, in my opinion, does not capture the essence of the piece. Nothing against the performance because she is obviously very talented. The start and end point just misses what the piece is written to communicate.

Diploma levels next ;P cool to see this up next to the system I used - AMEB (Australian). I played the Fauré for Grade 8 I think, and Poulenc I never studied formally but LOVE to play it. I think the whole sonata is diploma level. I did Trinity for my LTCL and played Reinecke, Nielsen and Borne's Carmen Fantasy from memory. It was a while ago now haha
Awesome! The Chaminade is associate level here. I sadly haven’t played the Jolivet before. I think it would be really cool if you did an episode of music from around the world in the 21st Century. So much great new music around now 😁
I never played through grades and haven't heard of ABRSM before TwoSet so this is very interesting for me to see. Note-wise I could probably play 1-7 and maybe 8 if the piece fits, although my f3 and higher can sound bad, but I think what throws me out earlier is my rhythm. I do have a sense of rhythm but I barely count and barely play to a metronome (I'm trying to change that) so everything unusual would catch me off guard and I'd be completely confused. I'd have to go with my gut and it's not always right so yeah, I'd probably fail. Soo I guess I am at grade 5 or 6 in my 5th year of playing

If I had a teacher I'd be Grade 6 now - saying that if I had a teacher from 2010 (my teacher moved away and I couldn't find another) I'd more than likely be practising for a Diploma but hey, my flute lessons have always been a bit hit and miss since my music teacher, in school [back in the 80s] left to take a position in another school! I'd be Grade 6 singing if it wasn't for the lock down, I don't think I'm destined to play any instruments/sing lol!
In the exams there's a section for 3 pieces you've prepared, a section for scales (the examiner will ask you to play various scales/arpeggios with various articulation depending on the grade), a sightreading section, and a listening section. But all of these pieces shown here are things that would be in the prepared pieces section! And for the sightreading you generally have about 3-5 minutes to 'practice'/get a feel for things before showing it to the examiner. They're not looking for perfection, just to see how you do with something you've not seen before and see how you approach it! I took gradees 1-8 and the first level of diploma on flute, grades 1-6 on piano and 1-5 singing so I've done a LOT of these exams lol - hope this is helpful!
Hi Amelie, have you ever tried the Rubank's method for flute book? And if you have, how would you compare it to the ABRSM? Like for example, what is the ABRSM equivalent if you finish the elementary method book? As I am not looking into official gradings yet, it would be nice to have a rough idea on where I am at. Thanks alot!
After finishing the elementary method, I know Rubank has an advanced method or you can try the Cavally Etude book 1 ( there are 4 books in the whole set )

@@flutechannel Thanks! I've heard AMEB is the most difficult exam though ? AmusA and LmusA are extremely difficult, I failed my AmusA exam last year even though I've been playing for 5 years and never failed an exam before
Diploma levels next ;P cool to see this up next to the system I used - AMEB (Australian).
I would pick Nielsen, Jolivet and Chaminade. But I'll have to do Diploma levels soon!
Awesome! The Chaminade is associate level here. I sadly haven’t played the Jolivet before. I think it would be really cool if you did an episode of music from around the world in the 21st Century. So much great new music around now 😁
My suggestions would be Peter Sculthorpe, Ian Clarke and Robert Dick 😊
Great idea!
Whoa, how'd you split your video like that? Extremely useful feature!
Where do you mean?
But regardless, thanks!
The playback bar is split into parts for each grade you play
Suddenly think of which one on 2set and this vid was earlier posted...
Where would the kuhlau Flute Fantasie in D go? I feel like its complex interpretation, fast scales and dynamics might be higher than level 8..?
Ya, I would say so.
@@flutechannel Update. I just tried to play part of the kuhlau fantasie. GOD ITS SOO NICE. Mannnn what a beautiful piece. rnadom question, whos ur fav composer and flute piece. i like tchaikovsky and I LOVE devienne flute concerto no 7
devienne is amazing!
@@flutechannel Yes. Sad, i cant find much info on him online. and his works are so overlooked.
@@tchaikovskyfanboy2928 imslp might offer some insight!
Hii i am from México and I don't know what's ABRSM?
Do you have to sight read those? Or do you practice every piece on a list and be ready to play what they select on the day?
You have to prepare.
Hello Amelie I hope you are well and nice playing 👍 😊 This piece got me interested (poulenc flute sonata 3rd movement) I checked it out on another video with piano and flute and it's a good one 😊 I would love to hear you play the whole thing 😍
Planning on making a music video about that one. I have done "Just Practicing" on it a few years back.
@@flutechannel Fantastic! Can't wait to check it out and I'm sure you'll blitz it 😊
I'm a sax player that plays flute for fun.
The quick and flashy parts are not the problem...
everything below F is a problem XD
Me: man i cant play past level 2.
Also me: has been playing flute for aproximately 2 and 1/2 weeks
Flute has seemed to come pretty easily to me, tone and ridiculously high note-wise, but articulation and remembering fingerings + sight reading is another story lol
I started playing the flute 7 months ago:My biggest achivements are Concertino (Chaminade) and the concerto in G (Mozart)
Also what Grade is the Partita in A minor(Bach)?
Thanks
Where can man download the list of all pieces covered by this classification?
Thx for this funny video
Found it googling...
I still don't know my level at flute.:( I play Vivaldi , Adès en 24 études op.15 and Teleman.
after 7 years of playing, i would say I'm between 7 and 8
I've taught myself everything on my own. I guess I'm currently at grade 5 😊
That's awesome!
Amelie: Yo man, can I copy your homework?
TwoSet: Yeah sure, just don't make it obvious.
Amelie: **makes video**
Teacher (us): It is... acceptable.
As a flutist who’s about to do grade one I am not looking forward to the future lmfao
What grade is the Mercadante concerto in e minor?
Weow I am a level 7. Now 8 looks a little fishy to my eyes.👀👀
Well... say goodbye to my dream of being a classical musician
Oof feel like im grade 7-8 closer to 8 after 6 years of playing...
Hello again lol. I think im about grade 5-6 maybe?
Bruh I've played for 7 and I'm barely grade 5
i'm 6.5 years in and grade 8+; not bad i think !
I’d say after....around 5 months of playing I’m at 5-6.
Fantastic!
I can play from 1-6. 7 is where it gets difficult lol I’m going into my 6th year playing
