Adult Flute Beginner - Flute Progress in First Year

  • Опубліковано 8 гру 2017
  • I'm an adult flute beginner from Hong Kong. When I started the flute, there wasn't many videos which cover progress across time. And here I concentrated my first year with the flute in under 7 minutes. Still LOTS of room to improve. I hope I'll be able to make more flute videos in the future.

    Your progress is amazing! Just keep your fingers a bit closer to the keys instead of springing up after every note. It’ll allow you to play faster with more precise finger switches.

    It's normal...to have a rough sound when you move to different flutes. I can't play a Yamaha that well however a Haynes head joint I sound like a decent musician. Very cool video journal. Thank you for sharing. Keep playing! 🎶😊

    I’m 68 and love the sound of the Flute. Have been playing one for a number of years. Taught myself and still not great but love playing it. Sits on its stand and pick it up nearly every other day. I play Jazz so it’s alot of fun playing along.

    Awesome video. I am also a piano player, and I picked up the clarinet really easily, but found the flute really hard. I feel the fingering is easier on the flute, but getting decent sounds out is tough, and I am getting out of breath very easily - I did not have that with the clarinet. What motivates me is that the sound of the flute is so beautiful.

  • @joemagnets9940
    @joemagnets9940 6 років тому +15

    Four more years to go... it takes about 5 years of constant practice to get to where you play any instrument as easily as you talk. It's about the same for children, they speak their minds and communicate without having to really think about the words and how they are formed in the mouth. Naturally some will be faster or slower, but you're doing real well. You are making progress, but until you can think about what you need at the store, while playing the instrument, you ain't quite there yet.

    • @DanaMini
      @DanaMini  5 років тому +5

      Thanks Joe. I speak piano many years before I started my flute. After so many years of studying piano with a pro and with diligent practice, still I’m nowhere near at the stage to communicate freely on a piano haha. Music is a study for a lifetime :)

    The pieces played here is what I always wanted to play on the flute
    It took probably three years to finally finalize my decision and get myself a flute from a music shop. It costed a lot for sure and I wanted to use my savings but my grandma wanted to use her money to pay for it instead since she really does not want me to spend my savings so thanks a lot grandma :’)
    I might be getting the flute in the weekends and I am expecting a lot of difficult times and feeling of giving up (I had this experience with a violin so I gave it to my cousin and he returned it back to me again with a broken string, ow. He’s now playing the guitar or bass though and a long time ago we both learned piano for a moment)
    I also used to play the tin whistle 1-2 years ago and wanted to move on to the flute because of the pieces shown here again and I always go back here to watch to remind me not to give up again when I don’t make a good sound when playing as a beginner =)
    update! okay so 10 months later, i think ive been playing for 8-9 months or as old as this comment
    so far i've done a recital 4 months ago and i was part of a school wind ensemble and performed on an event night last month! now this month i might have my recital again

    Congratulations! One recommendation: play F# with your ring finger instead of your middle finger. The middle finger is the fingering used by clarinetists and saxophonists. The ring finger is the correct fingering for flutists and produces a better tone quality. Congrats again. Looks like you're having fun!

    • @DanaMini
      @DanaMini  5 років тому

      Thanks Jayd! I think the horizontal position aims to look uniform in a marching band, and we’re aiming to have our embouchure parallel to the embouchure hole in order to produce a clearer tone. Comments are welcome if I have misunderstood the concept :)

      I practice almost everyday, 20 to 30 minutes on weekday and 45minutes to 1 hour on weekend. I have to stress that HOW we practice is equally important as HOW MUCH we practice. Happy practicing :)

    Absolutely inspirational.
    You said that when you got your new flute you lost your flute voice. What does that mean? Were you struggling with the new instrument and still practicing regularly or were you not practicing?

      When you play a flute for a long period of time, you get used to how you blow into it and it’s kinks. All flutes are different and take different ways to blow into it. I played an intermediate flute for 5 years and recently got a pre-professional flute. You have to blow lighter and such. It’s different for everyone. Basically she had trouble adjusting to a different flute.

    Happy to see how much progress you've made! I myself will be starting to learn flute soon, so I saw this as inspiration. By the way, what did you mean you lost your flute voice? I don't have a clue as to what that means, I've never heard that before 😅.

      Thank you mimi! I'm happy that my video inspires people who are starting the flute.
      [nerd mode on]: As I understand (anyone please correct me if I'm wrong), The sound of flute is produced by the volume of wind we blow, at a particular angle formed between the edge of lip plate and embouchure. When I switched to my new flute, I had to adjust my embouchure in relation to the new lip plate in order to make it sound. I wasn't able to make a clean pure sound out of it which I was able to produce in the old flute, and yeah, I lost my flute voice. Luckily I was able to find it again :)

    Amazing progress! How many hours a day did you practice? Do you read music? Did you learn online or with a in person tutor?
