Elvis would have been duly impressed by her vocal abilities…but I highly doubt he would have appreciated her butchering this beautiful song. Having seen him perform it live the year before he died, I certainly know that I didn’t. She has great vocal abilities…but what you do with them is what counts.
@@ChicagoDB Interesting. I've been following Diana's evolution for a while. Her interpretations often differ dramatically from the originals. Indeed, I've learned to expect the unusual from Diana. She is definitely not afraid to deviate from tradition. I'm not surprised that her choices create controversy. There are a lot of Russian traditionalists who are very unhappy with her interpretations of famous Russian songs. But don't be too certain that Elvis himself would have been upset with Diana's interpretation.
@@vahauser51 - Elvis actually covered many songs…but you won’t find any that are nearly unrecognizable from original material…because he greatly valued and respected the original content…right now I shudder to think what Diana would have done to various songs he covered or adapted. There is little about this performance that could really be called an “interpretation”. At best she is engaging in what would be referred to in classical music as “variations on a theme”…or “sampling” as Rappers and such do when they lift music or lyrics from other’s material. Sad really, because she could have done something resembling a more tradition “cover” of a beautiful song - and dazzled with her vocal range and flexibility. There is almost nothing about this rendition that should result in it being called “Can’t Help Falling In Love”…she should just call it something else.
@@ChicagoDB I'm confused. You watch Diana, but call her a musical butcher. Why watch her? Etta James is the original performer of It's A Man's World, but everybody remembers the James Brown version. Bob Dylan wrote All Along the Watchtower, but everybody remembers the Jimi Hendrix version. But back to Diana. These TV shows require short songs, under 3 minutes. Diana still doesn't speak English very well. So, she cuts whole verses and uses melodic vocal runs as filler. Also, she is not the first person to sing Can't Help Falling In Love in a minor key. But Diana doesn't need me to defend her. She knows very well that she angers traditionalists. She knows. Which returns me to, why do you watch her?

A person can have amazing vocal abilities and still utterly butcher beautiful material...which she did. And I would point out that all of those artists and songs you mentioned were beautifully done in different styles and DID NOT butcher the original material. There is also nothing wrong with merely performing "Can't Help Falling In Love" in a minor key...except SHE DIDN'T she took a fantastic song and transformed it into something largely unrecognizable. As I said before...call it something else...no problem. Because it certainly is not "Can't Help Falling In Love". I would never listen to this again regardless...but that is merely because I hated her song. She certainly has serious vocal abilities...but as always - it matters what you do with them. You can 'sing the phone book' if you merely want to show vocal ability...but how well would it sell? I would also point out that the song itself is 3 minutes long...so its not like there wasn't enough time to sing it.
You're the 4th or 5th vocal coach who'se said they want to look down Diana Ankudinova's throat and in my (lay) view they were the ones who also offered the most knowledgeable and insightfull and emotionaly true analysis. You deffinately are there in the top 5. I just wish you could find more time for Diana
Good day! Some people may quibble that she didn't sing much of the verses and primarily just repeatedly sang the chorus, but for the purposes of the show that she performed it on, and the way that she changed up the song, it works! She is extraordinary and I hope that she gains worldwide success. Also, when she did that vocalization as opposed to singing the words, it was just magical. Прикол Пелагеи как раз в контроле голоса, она потрясающе его контролирует, Диане пока не хватает опыта, на этом выступлении, к примеру, она как минимум в 2х местах не вышла на то, что она репетировала, и это слышно.

She managed in 3 minutes to make a demonstration (without being ostentatious) of all her vocal possibilities and skills. If you find that she sang very low in "Can 'help ..." you will still be surprised by the incredible undertones she put in her vocals in this performance!... You have to listen and be careful, it's so unusual that some of your colleagues didn't notice anything! ... or they thought it was in the background soundtrack! But in this show the capture of the voices live , there are no backing vocals Diana is currently participating in a very ambitious NTV show "ShowMaskGoon" ("Шоумаскгоон") shot in Mosfilms studios with Virtual Reality sets. The sound is recorded live. The principle is as follows: there are 9 permanent participants who are both judges and competitors. Everyone has to perform in 9 predefined styles, changing each time in each of the 9 parts of the show. It is very interesting because the candidates have to get out of their usual repertoire. To the 9 judges / candidates is added a different guest each week who also votes, because the artist who is on stage does not vote. They all have points from 2 to 9 to be distributed according to their assessment of the performance. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. Beth, I think that you may have been misinformed. From everything I have heard and read, Diana is not an Alto, but a true Contralto. She can go lower and deeper than Cher. Otherwise, I totally agree with all of this. She's AMAZING at what she does and UNIQUE. Luv ya!
The fact is, “alto“ is not a vocal FACH anyway. It’s a part given to in choirs, for whatever strange reason, (Even Sopranos can end up playing the “alto” part if there’s a lack of lower voiced females],but the true name is contralto.

What a great reaction and analysis! Thank you! Diana Ankudinova is such a perfect storm! She was born with a body that can make sounds unachievable by virtually anyone else. And she very early on became very determined to master music and vocal technique. And she has a natural talent which has allowed her to learn these things very well and very quickly. And she has a commitment to living the emotions of the songs she sings as she sings them. And she has the actor's insight that allows her to do this effectively. She is a tremendous gift to the world, and there will never be another like her!
She became famous in Russia after winning the show called "You are Fabulous!" (Ты супер!) where contestants are orphans or have family problems. She was saved from her alcoholic mother who almost killed little Diana like her other sisters. Hopefully she now lives with her lovely step-mother and studies in acting college in Moscow. Many Russian musicians and producers think she will have bright future in music career.

Loved your commentary Beth thanks .She tried to attend the second best music school in Russia the audition went well then they gave her a vocal exam and said her vocal anatomy just didnt look normal at all so they turned her down.🤯 Diana then applied to the top school in the country and was excepted .👍🤩😍 Thats crazy but it worked out for the best. 👏👏👏👏👏

I've listened to other people reacting to Diana Ankudinova and sadly, it was readily apparent they didn't know much about voice, singing, or what they were talking about. So here are my thoughts for what they are worth: for those in your audience that don’t know, Diana Ankudinova was only 18 years old when this performance took place during the 2021 season of a Russian vocal competition called the "ShowMaskGoOn!". Diana’s cover of the Elvis Presley classic "Can't Help Falling In Love", shows Diana Ankudinova has what many vocal professionals I've come across believe is a true contralto sound, and for those that don’t know female voice types, a contralto is the lowest kind of female voice, and a true contralto voice is very, very rare. First, to answer a very common question asked about Diana's vocal range because vocal range helps define a female singer's voice type. At 14 in 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5. As of September 2021, 4 years later at age 18, her lower functional range was measured from a C3 and her upper range was measured at B♭5. But, it's not just how low she can go. It's the exceptional quality of her tone in her lower range. It's all about the roundness, the fullness, and the depth of her voice, along with her ability to create and access an enormous amount of resonance that further defines Diana as a "dramatic contralto", which is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types. How does Diana Ankudinova do it? How can such a young female singer reach such a low, rich, deep, and profound sound? Without actually scoping her vocal tract, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals attributes Diana’s sound to her winning the genetic lottery and as you stated, just being born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds appear to be longer and thicker than most female singers, and her larynx also appears to be bigger along with her vocal track, which similarly appears to be longer than most other female singers. It’s this unique vocal anatomy that gives Diana Ankudinova the ability to produce these low, deep, rich, and full sounds, but without actually scoping Diana’s vocal track there is no way to be 100% sure. To really appreciate the vocal progression of Diana,s contralto sound, listen to "Rechenka", a Russian folk song sung in Russian for a vocal competition called "You Are Super!" during their 2018 Season when Diana was only 14 years old. Next listen to her cover of Chris Izaak's, "Wicked Game" the following year when she was only 15 years old during the 2019 Season of "You Are Super!". Diana Ankudinova won both the 2018 and 2019 seasons of “You Are Super”. Diana is also a true polyphonic singer which is an extraordinarily rare accomplishment for someone so young. A singer who has mastered this vocal technique can create up to two, and sometimes three different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and undertones that can make it sound like more than one voice singing. This polyphonic ability is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using auto-tune, a voice synthesizer, pitch correction software, or some other artificial form of electronic voice manipulation to alter or adjust her sound. Others think another person is singing in the background, or she is lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track. There is no artificial manipulation of any kind going on at all. The “ShowMaskGoOn” is a very competitive vocal competition and Diana Ankudinova is required to use only the equipment provided to her as all other competitors are required to do. There was no opportunity for her or any other competitor to use electronic vocal manipulating equipment. What you are hearing is all Diana Ankudinova. Usually, female singers don't reach full vocal maturity until somewhere around 24 to 28 years of age. Some reach it a little sooner, and others, a little later but Diana Ankudinova’s vocals are already developing well ahead of schedule for her vocal maturity. I look forward to what Diana will sound like when she does reach full vocal maturity. When she does she will have had many more years of voice training with her voice teacher in addition to more years honing her on-stage live performance skills. When that day comes, there will be no question that Diana Ankudinova will be a vocal force to be reckoned with and a wonder to behold on stage. Diana took part in the “ ShowMaskGoOn on” vocal competition in September of 2021 where she performed her cover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. The judges were a panel of nine professional singers that competed against each other and also award judging points to each other. When Diana was not competing she was a member of this judging panel. During Diana’s performance, the judge on the top row that stands up first is the famous Russian tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan who is married to the world-famous soprano Anna Netrebko. The blond woman also standing that’s dressed in red and looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance, then puts both hands on top of her head with a look of total bewilderment and disbelief is Julia Parshuta, a well-known contemporary Russian singer. Julia Parshuta also knows at some point, she has to compete against Diana Ankudinova, who is a true, once-in-a-generation talent. Finally, Diana won this competition.

I see a very big potential, that someday in future Diana will get "a call" from Hans Zimmer.... She is that "unearthly voice/sound" which is one of Hans Zimmers typical Styles... Have you ever heard of someone taking that Duo-tone type of singing into their upper range like this? I always felt this was kind of 'gimmicky' that using in the lower range of her voice was a way to distract from an ordinary voice. But this is stunning and the work it must have taken to extend this type of singing into that part of her range. If I am wrong let me know because at this point I think I'm looking at a one off type of talent. You really need to watch this from beginning to end without stopping to get the full effect of what I think is as unique a vocal phenomena as Dimash is. Please let me know if I am wrong. I mean I have heard of the Tuvan Throat Singers but most of their work is in the lower ranges. So I am not sure if I am on solid ground with my thesis of her being a category of one. I think Diana might be the most talented contralto in the world. Her range is incredible and the depth and fullness that she manages is truly breathtaking. She pays so much attention to the most minute syllable and nuance in her phrasing....wrapping each tiny piece in emotion and masterful control. There's one (of many) moments that gets me all the time. When she comes down from that high vocalization, one clearly can hear her low voice underneath her high tone, already before she was down.Then, starting with a growl that ignited that strong power part, she roars ;-) like a lion. With her, it is not about high or low notes it is all about the texture of her voice. This is her gift besides the general gift of being capable to sing that good in general. Unfortunately she doesn't seem to start her own career but continues to participate in these rating shows. Hope she will unchain one day soon and that she is happy in general. Elvis would have been duly impressed by her vocal abilities…but I highly doubt he would have appreciated her butchering this beautiful song. @@ChicagoDB Interesting. I've been following Diana's evolution for a while. Her interpretations often differ dramatically from the originals. Indeed, I've learned to expect the unusual from Diana. She is definitely not afraid to deviate from tradition. I'm not surprised that her choices create controversy. There are a lot of Russian traditionalists who are very unhappy with her interpretations of famous Russian songs. But don't be too certain that Elvis himself would have been upset with Diana's interpretation.
@@vahauser51 - Elvis actually covered many songs…but you won’t find any that are nearly unrecognizable from original material…because he greatly valued and respected the original content…right now I shudder to think what Diana would have done to various songs he covered or adapted. There is little about this performance that could really be called an “interpretation”. At best she is engaging in what would be referred to in classical music as “variations on a theme”…or “sampling” as Rappers and such do when they lift music or lyrics from other’s material. Sad really, because she could have done something resembling a more tradition “cover” of a beautiful song - and dazzled with her vocal range and flexibility. There is almost nothing about this rendition that should result in it being called “Can’t Help Falling In Love”…she should just call it something else.
@@ChicagoDB I'm confused. You watch Diana, but call her a musical butcher. Why watch her? Etta James is the original performer of It's A Man's World, but everybody remembers the James Brown version. Bob Dylan wrote All Along the Watchtower, but everybody remembers the Jimi Hendrix version. But back to Diana. These TV shows require short songs, under 3 minutes. Diana still doesn't speak English very well. So, she cuts whole verses and uses melodic vocal runs as filler. Also, she is not the first person to sing Can't Help Falling In Love in a minor key. But Diana doesn't need me to defend her. She knows very well that she angers traditionalists. She knows. Which returns me to, why do you watch her?
@@vahauser51 I don't watch her...I'm commenting on this because I heard/saw it here. And my comment is entirely consistent. A person can have amazing vocal abilities and still utterly butcher beautiful material...which she did. And I would point out that all of those artists and songs you mentioned were beautifully done in different styles and DID NOT butcher the original material. There is also nothing wrong with merely performing "Can't Help Falling In Love" in a minor key...except SHE DIDN'T she took a fantastic song and transformed it into something largely unrecognizable. As I said before...call it something else...no problem. Because it certainly is not "Can't Help Falling In Love". I would never listen to this again regardless...but that is merely because I hated her song. She certainly has serious vocal abilities...but as always - it matters what you do with them. You can 'sing the phone book' if you merely want to show vocal ability...but how well would it sell? I would also point out that the song itself is 3 minutes long...so its not like there wasn't enough time to sing it.
You're the 4th or 5th vocal coach who'se said they want to look down Diana Ankudinova's throat and in my (lay) view they were the ones who also offered the most knowledgeable and insightfull and emotionaly true analysis. Good day! Some people may quibble that she didn't sing much of the verses and primarily just repeatedly sang the chorus, but for the purposes of the show that she performed it on, and the way that she changed up the song, it works! She is extraordinary and I hope that she gains worldwide success. Also, when she did that vocalization as opposed to singing the words, it was just magical. То, что вы смотрели только как она поёт народные песни - так это ваши проблемы, а не её. Песню Таниты Тикарам в исполнении Дианы, к примеру, слушать можно только ваты в уши запихав, там её вибрато на контральто вообще ни к селу ни к городу. Прикол Пелагеи как раз в контроле голоса, она потрясающе его контролирует, Диане пока не хватает опыта, на этом выступлении, к примеру, она как минимум в 2х местах не вышла на то, что она репетировала, и это слышно.

She managed in 3 minutes to make a demonstration (without being ostentatious) of all her vocal possibilities and skills. If you find that she sang very low in "Can 'help ..." you will still be surprised by the incredible undertones she put in her vocals in this performance!... You have to listen and be careful, it's so unusual that some of your colleagues didn't notice anything! ... or they thought it was in the background soundtrack! But in this show the capture of the voices live , there are no backing vocals
Diana is currently participating in a very ambitious NTV show "ShowMaskGoon" ("Шоумаскгоон") shot in Mosfilms studios with Virtual Reality sets. The sound is recorded live.
The principle is as follows: there are 9 permanent participants who are both judges and competitors. Everyone has to perform in 9 predefined styles, changing each time in each of the 9 parts of the show. It is very interesting because the candidates have to get out of their usual repertoire. To the 9 judges / candidates is added a different guest each week who also votes, because the artist who is on stage does not vote. They all have points from 2 to 9 to be distributed according to their assessment of the performance.
The 9 categories are:
"Song from a movie or cartoon"
"Rock hit"
"New music"
"Song of the late twentieth century"
"People are moved" (moving song)
"Soviet song"
"Pop hit"
"Grammy"
"Song of your choice"
The show airs on Saturdays at 8:20 p.m. Moscow time.

northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where
she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was
still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage
therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the
first to recognize something special in this little girl, and
eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons because

Beth, I think that you may have been misinformed. From everything I have heard and read, Diana is not an Alto, but a true Contralto. She can go lower and deeper than Cher. Otherwise, I totally agree with all of this. She's AMAZING at what she does and UNIQUE. Luv ya!
The fact is, “alto“ is not a vocal FACH anyway. It’s a part given to in choirs, for whatever strange reason, (Even Sopranos can end up playing the “alto” part if there’s a lack of lower voiced females],but the true name is contralto.

Diana Ankudinova is such a perfect storm! She was born with a body that can make sounds unachievable by virtually anyone else. And she very early on became very determined to master music and vocal technique. And she has a natural talent which has allowed her to learn these things very well and very quickly. And she has a commitment to living the emotions of the songs she sings as she sings them. And she has the actor's insight that allows her to do this effectively. She is a tremendous gift to the world, and there will never be another like her!

She became famous in Russia after winning the show called "You are Fabulous!" (Ты супер!) where contestants are orphans or have family problems. She was saved from her alcoholic mother who almost killed little Diana like her other sisters. Hopefully she now lives with her lovely step-mother and studies in acting college in Moscow. Many Russian musicians and producers think she will have bright future in music career.

I've listened to other people reacting to Diana Ankudinova and sadly, it was readily apparent they didn't know much about voice, singing, or what they were talking about. So here are my thoughts for what they are worth: for those in your audience that don’t know, Diana Ankudinova was only 18 years old when this performance took place during the 2021 season of a Russian vocal competition called the "ShowMaskGoOn!". Diana’s cover of the Elvis Presley classic "Can't Help Falling In Love", shows Diana Ankudinova has what many vocal professionals I've come across believe is a true contralto sound, and for those that don’t know female voice types, a contralto is the lowest kind of female voice, and a true contralto voice is very, very rare.
First, to answer a very common question asked about Diana's vocal range because vocal range helps define a female singer's voice type. At 14 in 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5. As of September 2021, 4 years later at age 18, her lower functional range was measured from a C3 and her upper range was measured at B♭5.
But, it's not just how low she can go. It's the exceptional quality of her tone in her lower range. It's all about the roundness, the fullness, and the depth of her voice, along with her ability to create and access an enormous amount of resonance that further defines Diana as a "dramatic contralto", which is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types.
How does Diana Ankudinova do it? How can such a young female singer reach such a low, rich, deep, and profound sound? Without actually scoping her vocal tract, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals attributes Diana’s sound to her winning the genetic lottery and as you stated, just being born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds appear to be longer and thicker than most female singers, and her larynx also appears to be bigger along with her vocal track, which similarly appears to be longer than most other female singers. It’s this unique vocal anatomy that gives Diana Ankudinova the ability to produce these low, deep, rich, and full sounds, but without actually scoping Diana’s vocal track there is no way to be 100% sure. To really appreciate the vocal progression of Diana,s contralto sound, listen to "Rechenka", a Russian folk song sung in Russian for a vocal competition called "You Are Super!" during their 2018 Season when Diana was only 14 years old. Next listen to her cover of Chris Izaak's, "Wicked Game" the following year when she was only 15 years old during the 2019 Season of "You Are Super!". Diana Ankudinova won both the 2018 and 2019 seasons of “You Are Super”.
Diana is also a true polyphonic singer which is an extraordinarily rare accomplishment for someone so young. A singer who has mastered this vocal technique can create up to two, and sometimes three different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and undertones that can make it sound like more than one voice singing. This polyphonic ability is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using auto-tune, a voice synthesizer, pitch correction software, or some other artificial form of electronic voice manipulation to alter or adjust her sound. Others think another person is singing in the background, or she is lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track. There is no artificial manipulation of any kind going on at all. The “ShowMaskGoOn” is a very competitive vocal competition and Diana Ankudinova is required to use only the equipment provided to her as all other competitors are required to do. There was no opportunity for her or any other competitor to use electronic vocal manipulating equipment. What you are hearing is all Diana Ankudinova.
Usually, female singers don't reach full vocal maturity until somewhere around 24 to 28 years of age. Some reach it a little sooner, and others, a little later but Diana Ankudinova’s vocals are already developing well ahead of schedule for her vocal maturity. I look forward to what Diana will sound like when she does reach full vocal maturity. When she does she will have had many more years of voice training with her voice teacher in addition to more years honing her on-stage live performance skills. When that day comes, there will be no question that Diana Ankudinova will be a vocal force to be reckoned with and a wonder to behold on stage.
Diana took part in the “ ShowMaskGoOn on” vocal competition in September of 2021 where she performed her cover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. The judges were a panel of nine professional singers that competed against each other and also award judging points to each other. When Diana was not competing she was a member of this judging panel. During Diana’s performance, the judge on the top row that stands up first is the famous Russian tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan who is married to the world-famous soprano Anna Netrebko. The blond woman also standing that’s dressed in red and looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance, then puts both hands on top of her head with a look of total bewilderment and disbelief is Julia Parshuta, a well-known contemporary Russian singer. Julia Parshuta also knows at some point, she has to compete against Diana Ankudinova, who is a true, once-in-a-generation talent. Finally, Diana won this competition.

Have you ever heard of someone taking that Duo-tone type of singing into their upper range like this? I always felt this was kind of 'gimmicky' that using in the lower range of her voice was a way to distract from an ordinary voice. But this is stunning and the work it must have taken to extend this type of singing into that part of her range. If I am wrong let me know because at this point I think I'm looking at a one off type of talent. You really need to watch this from beginning to end without stopping to get the full effect of what I think is as unique a vocal phenomena as Dimash is. Please let me know if I am wrong. I mean I have heard of the Tuvan Throat Singers but most of their work is in the lower ranges. So I am not sure if I am on solid ground with my thesis of her being a category of one. Thank you for answering my question.
I think Diana might be the most talented contralto in the world. Her range is incredible and the depth and fullness that she manages is truly breathtaking.
She pays so much attention to the most minute syllable and nuance in her phrasing....wrapping each tiny piece in emotion and masterful control.
I well up nearly every time I listen to her, it's insane.

There's one (of many) moments that gets me all the time. When she comes down from that high vocalization, one clearly can hear her low voice underneath her high tone, already before she was down.Then, starting with a growl that ignited that strong power part, she roars ;-) like a lion. Bone crushing, shivers.

With her, it is not about high or low notes it is all about the texture of her voice. This is her gift besides the general gift of being capable to sing that good in general. Unfortunately she doesn't seem to start her own career but continues to participate in these rating shows. Hope she will unchain one day soon and that she is happy in general. Very precious young woman
