Bremmer continues to call balls and strikes like a proper newsman. It's been a minute since we've had one so good at laying out the facts while maintaining a neutral political position in reference to them. Respect.

      He's not a journalist, he's a political science consultant.
We don't usually converge on the truth (or at least a consistent story) until well after the facts emerge.
His long term perspective is nice to hear, as well as a perspective that's been conditioned by getting the right answer when it comes to predictions.

Ian doesn't hate Israel, he's an objective observer - smth. ethnicity preoccupied nationalists can never wrap their head around (yes, I'm aware of different ethnic makeups of Israel BUT I'm also aware of different forms of discrimination towards eg Arab citizens of Israel, namely the zoning rules in the heart of "democracy " in the region).

Gary Gerstle on Ezra Klein’s podcast offered a good framework for what’s going on, saying that we’re in the midst of the political economic order shifting from neoliberalism to something we can only loosely understand at this moment. But much of it seems so confusing because we have aspiring democratic capitalist nations intertwined through trade with deceptive kleptocratic regimes and conflicts that have bubbled up along various alliances.

Ian was discussing the geopolitical aspect of the US government when mentioning a "good war." This was his objective perspective that a political researcher or any kind of researcher must have. When you research things scientifically, you must keep your biases, feeling or such away. It’s difficult to accept, but if you only hear analyses without such "cold-blooded" elements, they are often biased, likely one-sided and pointless.

Good talk, good guest. I agree generally with most of what the guest said but I think I am on opposite side politically compared to the guest and Scott. This is one two primary things:
First, I do not believe it is currently in the US strategic interest to be a "stabilizing" force in the world. I believe our actions have not been stabilizing since probably the early 2000s and it makes sense because we have already grown a lot economically and other countries are now catching up. Even with a slumping China they can still have more growth/year then a "booming" US. If we want to maintain our position as the dominant power, we must either destabilize other growing powers or look for a better growth strategy.
Second, I disagree with you both on how we should view Israel. I think in this a bit of history adds a lot of color that I felt Scott in particular did not seem to be aware of. I think stating Isarel at any point since its creation was the smaller "David" of David vs Goliath is completely wrong. Israel was created with the primary support of Great Britain and then at some point (I am not sure when, my history is also lacking) the US became the main supporter after Britain became broke. Most of the Jews who moved to Israel came from western countries where (I am assuming, please correct me) they were doing well prior to the holocaust where they were massacred horificcally in one of the worst acts of violence in human history. That was most definitely a genocide enacted upon the Jewish people and also on many other peoples like the Romanis by the then German Govermennt. Many Jews move to Israel before, and specially during and after the holocaust from what I understand. I am saying that most of these Jews moved from wealth western countries where they were already educated and had wealth which they could bring with them to Israel. This is also why I respect Jews so much. They are incredibly focused and intelligent people who are able to persevere even in the relatively hostile enivronement of the west. But they brought all their money and western knowledge with them during the creation of Israel. in the 1940s I belive Israel could be claissified as a western jewish state. Especillay if you consider how so many of the inhabitants came from Britain, US, Europe and moved voluntarily with their money and knowledge. Not to mention they had continued support from US and Britain with huge amount of money, military aid, and most importantly access to western technologies.
The difference between the West and the rest was a lot greater back then in the 40s and 50s and 60s and even 70s. Because Israel was always a western derived state, I believe it was never Israel as a David vs Arabs as Goliath. The arabs were much weaker than Israel back then. Now, the difference between them has gotten smaller and I believe the difference between two will continue to equalize. That is all I wanted to say.

Fact check: 45000 Palestinians were killed by Israel, 69% of them women and children; that’s 2% of the population of Gaza. Those are the direct deaths, when you include estimates of indirect deaths from disease it could be as high as 180,000 people. 1.9million out of 2 million people were forcibly displaced. 70% of all buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed. This war has the highest civilian toll combatant ratio of any war in the 21st century at 13:1. It had the highest kill rate since the Rwandan genocide. Call it for what it is, a genocide.

It'd be a flawed premise, an armed group that uses the death of civilians to their advantage will, duh, lead to more civilian deaths in a war, that outcome doesn't say much about the intention of the opposite side, when you also take into account that it's a dense urban environment it's particularly hopeless, either you don't wage a war at all or there'd be a war with a lot of civilian casualties, if one side starts a war than the other side is forced to act in any case. Also the reference to the death of "children", i.e. age below 18, as somehow inherently civilian doesn't cohere to reality, i'd assume they don't follow typical guidelines, some 100 years ago anyone over the age of 14 was an adult, that'd be more their reality

Given that, almost half of the US electorate, despite Trump's seriously transgressive and threatening rhetoric and ongoing disturbing decompensation in full public view, are still prepared to vote for him is ringing thundering bells across the globe. Trump is not a distraction he is a significant part of the problem and it he who has dismantled many of the guardrails that have existed since the end of WW2. It's therefore highly doubtful that these same Americans are capable of comprehending the issues or the stakes.

I had to stop reading several times. Can't imagine touring a place like that.
