CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Col. Jessep (Jack Nicholson) forces Lt. Kaffee (Tom Cruise) into a weakened position by forcing Kaffee to be nice.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this military courtroom drama based on the play by Aaron Sorkin, Navy lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) is assigned to defend two Marines, Pfc. Louden Downey (James Marshall) and Lance Cpl. Harold Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison), who are accused of the murder of fellow leatherneck Pfc. William Santiago (Michael de Lorenzo) at the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Kaffee generally plea bargains for his clients rather than bring them to trial, which is probably why he was assigned this potentially embarassing case, but when Lt. Commander JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore) is assigned to assist Kaffee, she is convinced that there's more to the matter than they've been led to believe and convinces her colleague that the case should go to court. Under questioning, Downey and Dawson reveal that Santiago died in the midst of a hazing ritual known as "Code Red" after he threatened to inform higher authorities that Dawson opened fire on a Cuban watchtower. They also state that the "Code Red" was performed under the orders of Lt. Jonathan Kendrick (Kiefer Sutherland). Kendrick's superior, tough-as-nails Col. Nathan Jessup (Jack Nicholson), denies any knowledge of the order to torture Santiago, but when Lt. Col. Matthew Markinson (J.T. Walsh) confides to Kaffee that Jessup demanded the "Code Red" for violating his order of silence, Kaffee and Galloway have to find a way to prove this in court. A Few Good Men also features Kevin Bacon as prosecuting attorney Capt. Jack Ross and Kevin Pollak as Kaffee and Galloway's research assistant, Lt. Sam Weinberg.

Considering that Jack Nicholson was paid 5 million for 10 day works in this movie, he surely delivered memorable impact on it.
demi moore got 3 million
Money well spent.
Hence the payday
"You gard damn right he did "
What about tom??
man jack nicholson is like a dangerous wolf flashing its teeth. one of my favorite actors.
+ShootEmClintt His ears poke up just like a wolf too... or a dog about to attack.
+ShootEmClintt He *is* a werewolf lol.
God it's so hard to hate his character though! Even if he's the bad guy!
+Em Rob He certainly does make a lot of valid points.
+Agent1W I used to be a werewolf, but I'm alright nowooooooooooooo.
A lot of great acting in this movie, but Nicholson stands out. No one could have done this scene better than Jack.
brian janson he was just a acting , many other a actors. could do it just as well , maybe better ....
John Wayne as Jessup and Montgomery Clift as Danny
spursfc
Name one
All facts he made this movie
Nicholson was brilliant in this role, if I was casting director and I couldnt get Nicholson, I would have put Gene Hackman in that role.
JT Walsh’s reaction at the end. Subtle and beautiful. Hands down one of the best acted movies out there.
Love JT. Great actor. Sadly missed.
Yeah he is trying to look stoic but that glance downwards suggests that he realizes the Colonel is wrong but he doesn't have the rank to question his behavior or actions. Or at least that is how I interpreted it & my opinion.
❤❤❤❤❤ I favorite actors in a few good men Jack Nicholson and JT Walsh ❤
Jack Nicholson got nearly all the really cool monologue in this movie
Even though he's in like a total of ten minutes lol
+Patrick Gogan Actually, it's almost 20 minutes. But who'se counting?
It's called dialogue
+pontiacGXPfan it's amazing. The man don't even blink.
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE JUICE !
"I just need a copy of Santiago's transfer order"
"You want me on that wall... You need me on..."
"Colonel, we're not there yet"
Did you order the code red 😠🙂 ?
He's having Pre-Traumatoc Stress Disorder 😂
@@VKP-i5i DID YOU ORDER THE CODE RED?!

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
I used to be a teacher, so I can definitely relate. Pretty funny comment! Have a good one.
Nah they say, can i go to the bathroom and they say can you? So you just walk away saying ok
''You have to ask me nicely''
''Can I please have the transfer order''
''....no''
+The Real Mr J. How it should have gone
***** I was just saying it would have been funny
+CanadianGamer And would have probably ended the movie right there. It'd have been highly suspicious.
Ares99999 wow you sound like a fun person to be around
Lol!
It's so funny to me how he keeps talking while he's puffing on his cigar: "You believe that, don't you Danny, that I'm here to help you in any way I can?"
It makes me think of Jack's frustration with Danny Torrance in a different film...
"DANNY!"
Getting Transfer Orders from Jack Nicholson was Ethan Hunt's most impossible mission yet
He has finally handled one
Jack Bauer sitting right next jack Nicholson as well
Watch his ears move back at 1:08. He's like a pissed off cat.
The Colonel isn't nearly as sociopathic and narcissistic as cats are.
nfl doesn't matter lol just noticed that
How the hell does he do that?!
He moves them...
also the eye lift and grin at 1:21, one hell of an acting job
This is the moment he worked out how to beat him.
Yes!!! 👍
Pride comes before the fall
He noticed Santiago's clothes were hanging in his closet before this. That's the first moment he knew some bs was going on
But Galloway had to remind him of it.
@@billbright100 he noticed it but it only clicked when he went to get the bat from his own closet weeks later. Brilliant writing.
“You can have all the transfer orders that you want”, I don’t know why but I laughed at that part, I believe Jessup was being sarcastic
I sometimes think that foreshadowes that jessup had something to hide and caffee woulf retrieve a fake document. Sorry for my bad english...
Not just sarcastic, but very intentionally snarky. Jessup loathes everything about Kaffee, despite the earlier facade of kindness when he complimented Kaffee's dad for being a legendary lawyer.
A: Can I have ____?"
B: Sure take as many ____ as you want."
In any such exchange, the thing in question must not be valuable because it's being given out for free.
Jessop's statement makes transfer orders seem cheap, trivial, unimportant. Jessop is again trying to throw them off the scent.
"And I don't want medals .." as he wears the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with"V" for valor, and 4 Purple Hearts.
hahaa
People who want medals rarely get any... It's the people who don't care for things like that, but instead focus on their jobs and those around them who gets them.
point is that he doesn't want or need anymore. he already has them. it's why he's only asking for respect.
@@oldtwinsna8347 Colonel Jessup is not ASKING Lieutenant Kaffee for respect. He is DEMANDING the respect which is due him as a substantially superior officer.
@A.C. B. ART .
You know Jack is a good actor when he can say with a straight face "I don't want money"
I never noticed this before but Jessup never blinked once in this scene. Insane!
And in the final confrontation with Kaffee (Tom Cruise),neither of them blinked. Incredible.
Yeah it's almost like people in Hollywood in the early nineties did a whole lot of cocaine lol
Know I’m late but he does blink. When he’s asked for a copy of the transfer order
He blinks a few times.
Answering a full bird Colonel with yeah, not good at all.
Apparently the colonel's words hit Tom hard enough that he requested a transfer to USS Enterprise to serve as a naval aviator
Jack Nicholson was straight up savage in this movie, his performance was far beyond grandtastic 😎
he's such a boss... i mean who comes even close, from the actors we have today...? his last great role was in The Departed, in my book. what a legend.
Jack Nicholson owns every scene he's a fantastic actor
If I had said " yeah" to ANY officer, I'd still be in front leaning rest.
FACTS
You mean you and entire platoon/company. It would start with "ATTENTION!!!...HALF-RIGHT...
HUAH !!!!" Then the dreaded command "FRONT LEANING REST POSITION....MOVE!!!!"
But this is an officer talking to another officer...it is a little different.
@@markmerzweiler909 officers are immune to the infamous Front Leaning Rest Position?
No, but unless they are being called on the carpet...usually it's more of a gentlemen's club atmosphere.
Kaffey knew exactly what he was doing when he asked Jessup for the transfer order instead of the lower ranks. It wasn't really about the copy, it was all to see who had the most power by giving demands, and obviously Jessup wasn't trying to let that Kaffey overpower him on that tip. Jessup let him have it.
DaReviewer you’re right but he wanted the transfer order because he knew he couldn’t go on Jessop’s word. He had to be accountable and he wanted to make sure Jessop did really approve of the transfer order
@@VerryJerry90 Demi Moore's character lays it all out clearly in a later scene. Kaffey asked for the transfer order specifically to see how Jessup would react to having his authority questioned. Kaffey did this right on the heels of Jessup revealing to Moore that he tacitly approves of Marines using Code Reds and, more importantly, doesn't like the idea of High Command questioning how he runs his unit from the safety of Washington. To be sure, at this point, Kaffey wasn't even dreaming of pulling Jessup onto the stand, but was pursuing an in-the-moment instinct.
Yeah, we saw the rest of the movie skippy. This isn’t any great insight. Wakanda ain’t real, homey...
Does anyone really think a military officer would let any of his underlings take the heat for his mistake?
I love you so much. Pointing this out helps my essay in ways you cannot imagine. God bless you
I can't even describe how good Jack Nicholson is in this movie. Just look at the shot that starts at 1:21. Just before he says "No problem" you can tell exactly what he's thinking and feeling just from his expression. The subtle movements of the eyebrows, the way his eyes narrow ever so slightly as his mouth slowly curls into a smile. You can see the sick satisfaction he gets from pulling rank and putting his subordinates in their place. You can't fake that, you've gotta live the role internally completely and utterly. The only other actor that can do that is Brando imo.
Or maybe Gene Hackman. He actually was a marine.
You've got to love that chilling tune at the end of this scene. It shows up throughout the movie like an anthem.
He pretty much said you betta put sum respeck on my name son!
Lol pretty much, that's all he wanted, some respeck and some fuckin courtesy
Haha! Omg! Straight birdman'd him!
He ain’t gone say it no mo!
Jack Nicholson makes me nervous. Great movie..!!
+Janya K Hey....only on military movies.................
Hell yeah he does. It's like he's not talking to Cruise but to you watching.
"You can have all the transfer orders that you want...."
Always found that line hilarious..
Whats that supposed to mean Colonel? Are you referring to your ability to fabricate “all the transfer orders that we want”?
Colonel: 😤 😤 😤
Too informal with a higher ranking officer. The on-the-spot correction is appropriate. Not crazy or indicative of something horrible, but a senior officer checking a little too comfortable junior officer.
In the movie, it's both! Kaffee is an immature dick who doesn't respect procedure and Jessop is a psychopath who uses procedure to get his authoritarian ya-yas out. The subtext in this scene is that Jessop is covering for an accidental killing at his orders, remember.
Ted Hendershot Marines are taught to be sociopaths, whether they already are.
I agree, he was informal, even though Jessop is a hard nose officer you have to show respect for the rank he holds. But I guess they wanted to play it up, right from the beginning the two have a dislike for one another.
Yup.
JSandusky69 You are a Devil Dog wanna be.
I'm pretty sure that a Navy lieutenant jg, when speaking to a Marine colonel, would be deferential and call him "sir" without having to be told. Lawyer or not, an O2 doesn't talk to an O6 like he's the hired help. That's the Marine equivalent of a Navy captain, and God help a JG who would speak to a four-striper like that.
Shows you how immature and lacking in professionalism "Danny" is.
James Schrumpf He’s an O3
Some weeeeeeird people in this particular comment section. It’s almost like they don’t realize this is a movie and think it’s really Lt. Cruise disrespecting Col. Nicholson. W.T.F! This is putting aside that within the movie itself Lt. Cagey is purposely provoking Col. Jessup to see how dirty he might be in this Code Red business based on his reaction.
gcHK47 no Kaffee is a LTJG/O2
@@peterp2153 They should 'respect' the military customs and they can still get the point across for this story. Seems to me, you've never served in any kind of situation where this 'custom' is deserved and should be respected. Maybe you are the 'weeeeeeird' one? I served 20 in the Army and know what the others are describing, even is you don't. Now, maybe you feel you weren't 'respected' much, huh?
I served 20 years in the Army. 'Almost' anything can be said, with the right respect the person deserves as a 'senior' NCO or Officer! Respect must also be shown to junior NCO's and Officers! They have earned it too!
Watched this. Did that to my boss when asked for my medical certificate on my return from sick leave. Now I got no job. Thanks a lot!
Jack Nicholson is the real reason why I love this movie!!!! he made A Few Good Men the classic it is today!!! #All Facts 👌💯💯💯
I suspect you are correct about Jack. Great scene here.
He blinked while the camera wasn't on him.
That's way over-simplifying it, Darius. Stfu
Without Jack the movie would be pretty dumb, to be honest. It's not very realistic, and Marine and Navy officers do not speak to each other like this, but it works because of Nicholson's force of personality.
Colonel Jessup was intimidating as hell when he needed to be.
I always preferred this scene over the court room scenes. (but both are great)
greatsea v
He asked for a copy of the transfer order simply just to see his jessip's reaction..cos Kathy knew something stunk
jack nicholson and tom cruise is great actors one of my favorite.
this is my favorite scean of the movie
Next time someone asks me a favor, I'll tell them, "you have to ask me nicely". :)
Nicholson has such an unmatched screen presence
This scene is right on the money. There comes a time, and you may not realize it before the moment strikes, when you come face to face with someone who is clearly a psychopath. And they'll let you know it.
In that moment, how you handle yourself is all on you.
unfortunately.
77 people didn't ask Colonel Jessup nicely.
Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors. He killed this role.
And Santiago with his code red
*_It's sad he didn't do more movie's through out his life time truly a great actor..._*
Odd statement considering he has been in loads of films over the last 6 decades and is still alive?

IS THAT HOW YOU FUCKIN' ADDRESS A MARINE COLONEL?
Maiden Utah yeah
shylildude But you have to ask me nicely.
My father was a Marine, and he used to flip out when we said "Yeah..."
_"What's this 'yeah' stuff?"_ he'd respond.
Jack is a fuckin legend bro. Never disappoints’
What an expression. No wonder he's a legend, Jack Nicholson. One of my favourite scenes.
Ask the man NICELY!!!!!!
A senior officer calling a junior officer by his first name? Highly inappropriate.
Even though Tom Cruise knew Jack was acting, he still crapped in his pants during that scene lol
I think lawyers are staff officers, whereas Jessuop is a line officer, I think this is partly why Jessuop dosen't like him, staff officers work in an office, would not be out on the front lines.
Yes. Additionally, all Marine Corps officers are line officer, no matter what their job or MOS is. But you probably already knew that. Anyway, good movie.
Leng Her didn't know that, I know doctors in the Navy are staff officers, I thought maybe lawyers were too.
Leng Her this guy reminds me of one of our captains and O-6 that was our commaner onboard our ship, just a real jerk. I remember one time he took some gum out of his mouth and dropped it into someone's coffee cup.
Leng Her Yes, every marine is a rifleman, first and foremost.
Bri G. Yes, but any high ranking military man knows full well only a very small percentage of the military is actually in combat danger in the front lines. And that is the only way that the front line guys can do what they do: supplies, logistics, equipment, food, medical, engineering, etc.
I remember one commanding officer we had in the Navy, an O-6 same rank as Jessop, he was a real jerk. I don't think anyone on board my ship liked him.
“The transfer order doesn’t actually exist so I’m going to make sure you never mention it again”
gonna say this next time someone asks me a favor lol
Jack’s subtle facial expressions convey monstrous emotions.
Pricelesss the icy stare and the words full of contempt of the Colonel. A lesson in military courtesy and respect. WELL DONE, JACK!!!
Most people says Al Pacino or Robert De Niro are the greatest. For my part is Jack better. I like them all.
Jack has 3 oscars bro of course hes better.
@@Forsaken-Orphan That has absolutely nothing to do with it. Hilary Swank has 2 Oscars, but that doesn't make her better than someone like Glenn Close who has 0 Oscars.
DeNiro's a lunatic

There is no "greatest". Just the greats.
Jack Nicholson being terrifying with zero violence.
That last touch of the 80's... 1:31
Bokaj01 I see what you did there. 😏
What the hell do you mean? This was 1992........
Kaffee knew what he was doing. This was the set-up for the courtroom moment...
this movie is well written, perfectly acted out, and sublimely directed. every element of filmmaking here, from the artistic to the technical, is right on the spot. because of that, the entire movie never loses focus and remains engaging throughout its runtime. this is what separates people who are masters of their craft from those who simply 'make movies'.
excuse me for sounding like my grandpa but - they don't make them like this anymore.
Whenever I think of the great Nicholson movies I always forget he was in this movie for some reason.
And he’s the best thing in it.
Wasn't his kid named Danny in the Shining? You can't handle the truth.....
this movie has such great dialogue. So many iconic lines from this movie. They don't make movies like this anymore.
Jessup made the mistake of revealing his true self, thereby helping the defense team in prep for the trial
In my day..in my war ..in my Marine Corps..no subordinate rank would EVER speak to bird colonel like that! NEVER EVER!
There was no transfer order
Dale Chawkins Markinson gave it to airman O'Malley
@@mhks68 Yes but it was doctored/fake.
Duh
None of you are understanding Col Jessup. Lt Kaffee was being disrespectful by not requesting those transcripts with the courtesy of calling Jessup, "Sir" You address a superior officer in the Armed Forces as Sir/Ma'me or by their rank,Colonel. He was suppose to say, "Col Jessup, may I please have the transcripts,Sir" Jessup was heated over Kaffee's lax conduct.
This video gets to the core of the human ego - Respect. I love that he says it so plainly.
THIS was great acting at it's phoenix

He is a Colonel of the sole superpower on earth.
Jack wasn't acting here, he was chanmeling his anger towards Tom Cruise and his bland face/acting
one of the best movies of all time!!!!!
RIP JT Walsh
Regardless of any suspicion of wrongdoing, Jessep is still a "full-bird" colonel and has earned that rank and the respect and courtesy that goes with it. Kaffee has a tendency to show little, if any, respect or courtesy to anyone and Jessep's the first person in the movie, I believe, that actually sticks his boot up Kaffee's ass sideways (figuratively speaking) to teach him one of the most basic lessons learned in the military.
This scene pretty neatly encapsulates the attitudes almost every Marine has towards the Navy.
Yeah and that's a damn shame. I understand it on some level, but hate it at the same time. Esp those two branches, since they're SO historically, intrinsically linked.
Marines exist to keep sailors from mutiny attempts
@@stevec7770 That was historically - and certainly today - a very small part of what Marines do !
They were originally the offensive and defensive fighting force on ships, as well as amphibious infantry.
Today, as you probably know, many Marines never set foot on a vessel their entire career; after special forces, they're the "first to fight" branch in any ground theater and most often deploy by air.
Ofc, they also help protect the president, embassies, and so many other important tasks.
@SEVEN 6 Actually, the Marines have their own fleet, but still a funny comment. 😆🤣
This is a foreshadowing of Sorkin’s poker film “Molly’s Game”. Caffey doesn’t use the word “Sir”, which is a reflexive move in the military. That’s how he gets Jessup to “show his cards”. Brilliant.
i dont want money nd i dont want medals..wht i do want so badly nd ask nicely s an oscar for this..
no matter how much i hated this kind of egoistic person, he is the superior and of higher rank, and it is your duty to speak politely and address him correctly when u open your mouth. tat simple
+aisais baby He was intentionally being that way to gauge the colonel's reaction. Watch the movie. Its actually stated. He KNEW it was impolite.
aisais baby oh stfu
Little known fact. Cruise, in part, based his character here, his attitude and so on, his stare, his mannerisms, on Scientology leader David Miscavige. I read that in a book somewhere. Could be bullshit but having seen David Miscavige on Nightline, it rings true.
I run my house like colonel jessup....
BRILLIANT ACTING JACK !!!
you would have to ask me nicely
TheSlimmshadyy I beg your pardon?
This is when he knew Colonel had a problem with ego . I think it is at this moment that he knew that if he played his cards right , he’d get a confession from him , he just had to break his ego
Hey.......No problema........
This has got to be one of the greatest scenes of all times
"No problem" see wicked smile on his face.Jack Nicholson is the greatest actor of this era
I LOVE how no one ever talks about Col. J’s ribbons being out of order. The Purple Heart is not a higher award than a Silver Star. Yet he has them incorrectly placed on both his Deltas and Alphas.
That’s a navy cross bro at the top
as i get older i realise the "bad guys" in movies are actually doing the right thing

Check Nicholsons ear in the 1:10 when he say ask me nicely 😂😂😂😂
You know, Kaffee never technically asks for the transfer order. He just makes a statement saying that he would like to have it.
Yeah but dont just hear at what he says. LOOK how hes asking for it. His demeanor is like yo dude i need that transfer order aight? Not how you address higher ranks
I wouldn't disagree with any of that. The original point I was hinting at, I suppose, was that it's clever touch on the script's part that Jessup demands Kaffee ask him for the order, but Kaffee doesn't technically ask for it. Cruise's performance also does a nice job of conveying his petulance and disdain for Jessup. A great scene all around.
+Ryan Borchers i understand what u meant now. Clever indeed
You know in that film if you guys have watched it, it was implied that Kaffee did that to Jessup on purpose. He wanted to see his reaction, if he could be pushed or what.
Dude, the Colonel, has a Navy Cross, a Silver Star, a Merit of Legion, a Bronze Star and more...and they're all in order in my estimation. Danny took on a big Dogg and won...
Being a Navy man we had 50 Marines onboard so I slept well at night. we were sometimes just 1 mile off the coast of vietnam often under fire, I thought maybe the bad guys might capture our ship, but those Marines slept in the comparment next to me so no worry.
Wtf are you talking about rockwell rhodes?
"Bad guys"? How old were you when you served? Six?
I love that subtle little moment where Jessup loosens up his face, he is no longer angry and tense. Around 1:22, when his lips and eyebrows subtly move. Great acting 👏
JN is an hell of good actor really... Insane
That's how I talk to the pizza dude when he wants a tip
Cruise out of his element jacks just that good
Besides the great acting performances, I thought Tom and Demi looked their best in this film.
I can’t believe a naval officer would speak so disrespectfully to a Colonel.
