I have always said that fiddle and guitar may give country music it's identity, but the steel guitar gives it soul !!!

Interesting thought, although perhaps a bit insulting to fiddlers and really sensitive guitarists.

Thank you Larry ... yes that was a great guitar, coined "The Holy Grail" by many ... Mighta shoulda kept it, but I'm sure you know how it is when you have to free up money for another toy ;-) ... After Amazing Grace, this one gets the most views still even after 9 years. Still this song vexes me, I don't know if you heard it or not, but right after about 2:55 the sound/tone changes to a bit of doubling or chorusing and I don't know why. I tried for the longest time to find where that "Extra" guitar was coming from but never able to. I believe at that time I was recording 2 tracks of steel at the same time from 2 different amps, and must've nudged one of them a few milliseconds out of sync with the other, but was never able to fix it.

Mullin steels are the "Cadillac" of steel guitars; they are made with expertise and great care; been to their factory out in Colorado; bought a G2 D-10 and enjoyed playing it for years.

Mullen makes a great guitar... I'm especially fond of the PRP's... had a couple of them, an 88 and this 90 with Quad Original 705's... originally owned by Jim Lindsey who toured with Ty Herndon for about 10 years... Mickey Adams played it almost exclusively for 4-5 years when I got it from him.

Stumbled upon this again today. This tone is as good as anything I've heard. I've always been a fan of the Pre-RP Mullen tone since seeing Tommy White's Music City Network clips. Was this recorded direct or mic'ed up? Great playing.

Dale please tell me about your signal--the pups etc. I’ve had 4 Mullen guitars and couldn’t get that tone and string separation. They were att Pre/RP guitars so maybe I should try a G2?? I know it’s in the hands too, I can get what I want on another guitar but I want the comfort/ergonomics/butter-like feel that comes from a Mullen. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks for the question... This seems like almost forever ago... I looked at the video but was unable to tell whether or not I was using a Li'l Izzy with this, but I suspect that I was. At least I was using one off and on around that time. The Li'l Izzy's seemed to be all about string separation. This guitar had Original 705's in it... AND to be honest, a LOT of folks thought this guitar was the Holy Grail of sound.

That Mullins sounds almost exactly like my emmons lashley legrande l I, minus some reverb. don't know I used to have two of those Mullen guitars and never could get the sound out of either one. The newer one broke the top G# and the top B strings about every third time I played and the pre R P about every 8 to 12 months a leg insert would break off the endplate. Sooooo, back to emmons i went. I'll probably buy me a new 65 pre sound push pull. I know Tommy white loves his Mullens, but, I will say this, in my personal humble opinion, I thought Tommy sounded better on the push pull. ?????????? 🤠😃

    • @steelinatune
      @steelinatune  2 роки тому

Thank you John, I don't disagree with you. Many VERY good ears had deemed this guitar the Holy Grail, a few of them being push pull guys. I was actually looking for a G2 when I heard this one was going to be available. I was ready to order a new G2, but never heard 2 that sounded the same... some sounded great and some sounded wonky. Every video I'd seen this guitar on wounded great. This was originally built for Jim Lindsey, who played for Ty Herndon for 11 years, and at the time Del told him this was the best sounding guitar he'd ever built. I sold this guitar in 2017?, I maybe shouldn't have.

John, I’m kind of going by memory on this as I haven’t had this guitar for about 3 years, and my set up has changed since... but here we go
      Emmon’s ABC
E’s raised and lowered on the Left Knee
7 lowered a whole on staggered LKL
      Vertical lowered 5 & 10 a half
      RKL, raised 1 a whole 2 a half, lowered 6 a whole and lowered 9 a whole
RKR, lowered 2 a half and a whole, raised 7 a half and a whole and lowered 9 a half...
      Hope that helps

I can only imagine what Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart would have to say about any of the music we love today. Music seems to change over time, yet we still enjoy the music written those Masters, and I suspect the music we love will continue to live and perhaps have a resurgence as well.

Thanks Jack.... Yeah this was a great guitar. When Del made this one for Jim Lindsey (Ty Herndon Steel) he told Jim it was the best sounding guitar he'd ever made. Many called it the Holly Grail for that reason. I probably should've kept it, but wanted to go in another direction with setup.
