I have had a fountain in my courtyard for about 20 years. It sits in sun mist of the day & I don’t bother to drain it to keep it pristine. Every spring I pressure wash it with an electric pressure washer, fill it & then keep it topped off throughout the summer. I use an algaecide to control the algae growth & occasionally skim any debris. Mine runs 24/7 from April to December. Then I unplug it & cover it until spring. I’m planning on buying a large one next year for a new garden I will be creating, so will keep your tips in mind.
My frog pond is au natural, filled with leaves & other detritus. It’s how the frogs live in nature & Ive never received a complaint from the residents. 🤭

Hi Deb, thanks for sharing your experience. A new garden?! That's always exciting!! You have taught me a new, cool word...detritus. I've never heard that one before. Frog ponds are great, sooo low maintenance.

Thank you again! I have spent the last couple of weeks looking at fountains on-line. The information you shared are some of the factors I have been considering. Love the tip about the dark stain.🤔

Mabe I don’t want a fountain🤔🥴☺️shoot or not a large heavy one? Love seeing snd hearing yours . My neighbor had a lovely one too but it is physically manageable! Point well taken about size and algae ! The price one pays for the joys of a garden😉

LOL I hope I didn't sound negative. I do love ours but they are more maintenance than I first would have thought. Yes, we gardeners are definitely workaholics.

Thanks for all the good information. I am going to try the hydrogen peroxide - great idea. When I had watched your original video about some of the algae products, I ran right over and checked the label more carefully of what I had been using at the time. Despite it saying it was safe for wildlife, there were all kinds of warning similar to what you had read. I was shocked and stopped using mine. I owe you for that. ❤️.

I know...how can it be safe for wildlife but can't come in contact with skin? What? Life baffles me sometimes. I used it for quite awhile before noticing the warnings too. I'm having good luck with the peroxide, I'll cross my fingers that it works for you too.
