This is by far my favorite era of Phil’s game and swing. So smooth and balanced. This was a fine time in the game of golf. The ball was still wound, and the emphasis was on shotmaking, not extreme distance.
Yeah golf before distance became a joke was so fun to watch. Not only because distance, but because the equipment in general makes golf too easy for the pros, and so the course has to change to make the greens fast like concrete to compensate. Just awful combination of things that make modern golf dull.
Played this course last summer and I will tell you it’s a gem! Tough as hell trying to understand how the ball flys so much different than sea level back home.
Efrin, the show was born out of the exhibition matches that have existed since the 1920's or prior. Get 2 guys. Get a course. Let them play. During the mid 60's and beyond, I loved it.
He came so close to winning several major championships, 2nd five times. When Colin was in his prime he could beat anyone as his Ryder Cup record suggest.
Monty is easily one of the best players of his era, majors disappointment included. Lovely extremely functional swing. Won the order of merit a bazillion times, Ryder cup record is excellent
Great match! I did some research and discovered that Mikelson's gorgeous wife was somewhat disapointed he lost $50,000. According rumours she told him he needed to change the shaft on his putter so we can assume so he never got laid that night.
This format would be superb with todays players and the technology available to broadcast it but could you imagine how much the players would want to appear? Tiger and Rory wouldn't get out of bed for a hundred grand!
I'd like to see this format return with possible charity events. The players don't realize how nice it is to see Byron Nelson , Sam Snead and lots of great players swinging great . I've watched golf since it started on tv, some day in 60 years someone will be thrilled to have the privilege of seeing Wolff, Hovland, and others for the first time.
That's what you call a good old-fashioned ass whoopin by Montgomery. Monte had a perfect shot that fit his ball flight to win the US Open and he failed to execute a shot he hits in his sleep. That's golfs way of saying FU Monte you ain't gettin a major.
Challenge match format that used to be the most popular form of golf entertainment way back when, kind of the last program to carry on the tradition as large tourney fields took over as the main golf format. Stroke play event, head to head, 50k to the loser, 100k to the winner, 75k on a tie (no overtime - if the round is halved strokeplay it's a draw).
I will still take his career ove many other major winners, simply for his consistency... He enjoyed a marvelous career. Better than most, Including many major winners

I'm not an engineer, but I play one on the internet. Gravity and thinner air.

In the 60s and 70s , 1800s that is, Young Tom Morris used to play matches against the best 3 players, and win.
Mrs. Doubtfire course record.
Who cares!
Thanks for uploading this.

Two wonderful players, tough as old boots both of them and not too many better ways to spend 54 mins watching something you enjoy!

He was a choke artist the Ryder cup means nothing
@@alanharper4910you’re obviously not a golf fan.

I'd like to see some of these guys play a cheap, easy course and see how low they could go.
mickelson would go to become a legend of the game - 5 majors - monty wouyld become golfs most well known nearly man. crazy
What a course and what a round by Montgomerie. Must be tough as hell to play if the original record was only a 68 (?!)
What a player Monty was 👏👏
I liked them driving the green, listen to the guy at 19:44 say SHIT when Colin tees off!
Still great today.
wish they would bring this back . mickekson vs keopka at pine valley . what a match. bring johnny back to do the commentary. or feherty
Monty should have won a major

John Kurtz right, good point.that would be so cool to play for big bucks to feeding children and stuff.
Bob Rossberg had more golfers playing from impossible lies than even the Golf Gods could imagine.

Nice shot at 28:28
seems kinda funny to see monty skinny
Can someone explain what this used to be exactly? Was it just a match play event for fun?

Who's the most famous cheat never to win a major?
22:44 😂
Shame Colin always chocked in the majors. Maybe the best to never win a major?
Senior major count? Lol
He's won a major now - a Senior Major, but a major
