Seve was my hero as a junior golfer. I followed him on many practice rounds in Augusta, when you could still actually get a ticket. His confidence and flair set him apart from any other on the course. Thank you so much for this treat, to see my favorite golfer once again.
Jack, the greatest, tee to green and game management who can compare. Seve, the greatest match play golfer ever and his range of shots was sometimes astonishing. These days the game seems so dry, so mechanical, so money driven. Very few great characters left.
As an American and HUGE Seve fan, I just wanted to thank you for uploading this. I never knew it existed and I appreciate it. Seve was a magician, a class act and a true gentleman, even finishing the hole when Jack gave him a short putt in an exhibition match. RIP Señor Ballesteros.
Thank you so much Sevefan. Excellent. I said to myself on the last "NO way Seve holes this, 2 million to 1"... Trust Seve, the legend....unbelievable!😮

I was at Manly in Sydney. Think it was 1971 when he shot a course record 62. Nobody ever hit a one iron like Jack. The greatest golfer that ever lived. What a credit to the game.
I watch a lot of old golf videos…and I would say there is something completely different about these two golfers. I think the modern game is crafted a lot off of these two right here.
Much more entertaining to watch and play. Watching the modern game is like wathcing baseball if they let the players hit with a metal bat 3 times the size of the wooden one. Playing it is like ten pin bowling with bumper lanes. I always play old clubs.

This match in 1986 at the Toyota Matchplay (Ireland) I feel justifies my earlier comment and Seve mano a mano more often than not came through, really miss his charismatic character.
I watched Jack play a round of golf at the Australian Golf Club in 1996, he was 58 years of age then and well past his prime, he was also rather out of shape to be fair. His swing was short and you could tell it was a real physical effort to make a decent swing. Despite this jack shot a 1 under round of 71 and to watch him manage his way around that course was an absolute delight, no wonder he won so many Majors, he truely is the very best ever.
Except Jack was born in January 1940, so he was actually 56 in 1996. Jack, as we know, had growing hip problems. They caused him a lot of pain. I saw him only a few years from that time when he had arrived to play a pro am with his son and Johnny Miller, and he wasn't sure he would play because of the pain. But he had a great career.
It is wonderful to hear Jack and Seve so clearly enjoying themselves. Well done RTE and Sevefan for uploading. @ Dana Starbuck @ commented this is "gold dust". I cannot surpass that comment. It is brilliant stuff. Thanks @ Sevefan. You did us a great service.
Seve was an absolute BEAST on the golf course, and he was a wonderful, admirable man. The golfing world hasn't been the same since his passing. But, please, let's not get carried away comparing these two champions. Jack Nicklaus was head and shoulders above the rest. His accomplishments in golf and life stand alone. The rest are competing for 2nd place.
Absolutely a record like no other. Jack was so dominant that you could combine the major titles of any two players in his era, and they would still fall short!! Even Tiger has three fewer than Jack. And Tiger will continue to have three fewer than Jack!! People who want to anoint Tiger as the GOAT can't ignore that Jack won everything on the regular tour and every major on the Champions Tour. You take Tiger. I'll take Jack.
Have to agree with most comments, two great ambassadors of Golf, I would only say if Seves drive matched his short game he would have been the best. R.I.P Seve. (Cookie 007).
En el minuto 12 aproximadamente, al escuchar a Nicklaus pronunciar la marca de sus palos..."su primo no, supremo", Seve y su humor, siempre dispuesto a emerger en cualquier momento...
It's hard at the age of 46 to compete with someone Seve's age and talent. Even so, Jack came within a whisker of tying the great Spaniard. Twice Nicklaus pulled his tee shot, the second time on the 17th hole, where it cost him a stroke. Arliss commented on the first pull that Jack's legs stopped working through the ball and the upper body took over. I wouldn't have noticed that, but upon replay, yes, I guess that's right. Even an all-time great still can have bad habits creeping into their swing. Golf is such a precise, demanding game. And the difference between winning and losing can be as little as moisture on a green.

its funny listening to Nicklaus yakking through the round. He sounds like everyones grandpa. It's also interesting to hear him say things like this @17:30
Considering Jack never played that course and Seve had numerous times, I would say Jack played very well. That 3 put on 18 was the difference in the match. Seve had the edge on 18. The club selection proved it.
Fantastic upload. This is gold dust! I think Seve would have traded the Masters Title from Jack for this win in that year. Many thanks Sevefan for a wonderful channel you have. Any news on the mythical 3 wood bunker shot at the 83 Ryder Cup? Or are we wasting our time looking for something that does not actually exist?
Strangely enough, Channel 4 did broadcast some US golf in the early 80s (I think they showed the Masters from '83 to '86). They may have broadcast ABCs coverage of the '83 Ryder Cup, so they could be a possible port of call.
Why is it that Jack faced other legends one after the other. Why is it that Tiger's major victories came against nobodies who never won a major. Young Jack today. Where is DeChambeau? I want to outdrive him with this new equipment. Young Tiger in the Nicklaus era. G damn it these clubs are too hard to hit.
Both absolute Legends with poor technique, after the great swings of Hogan and then Peter Thompson in the 40s 50s and 60s came the 70s and 80s swings, Apart fromTom Weiskopf and a few others none of us had a clue and didn't study Hogan enough including all our coaches, the lack of video didn't help though. The swings over the last 20 years have gone back to the Hogan style and with modern technology the top pro's make the game look a lot easier. Seve was a genius and an honour to have partnered with him 4 times in the Ryder Cup. RIP Seve.
@Spence Kissack: Sure, it was (by all accounts) a big cut shot from under the lip - I've read & heard so many accounts of it over the years, and seen the stills by Phil Sheldon. But I have no idea where you could have seen it, as the BBC didn't cover that Ryder Cup in any shape or form. I do recall commentary between Dave Marr & Peter Alliss late on the Saturday of the '87 match (the first US one the BBC had ever covered, broadcasting the ABC footage & using their commentary). Seve was playing a fairway bunker shot at 17, and Marr said: "Peter, he hit the greatest shot I've ever seen in '83, with that wood out of the bunker onto the green", with which Alliss agreed. This indicates (but doesn't prove) that ABC did catch it, & that it may still exist in their vaults. But again, given the worldwide demand to see it, it's not encouraging that they've never managed to unearth it - you'd imagine they've been searching as hard as anyone. ABC really would be the only company thhatt night have it.
The BBC did broadcast the 83 matches, I clearly remember staying up late to watch it. Europe nearly won but at least they gained the belief they could win in 85.
@@shanejones8884 No, I was referring to the '87 Ryder Cup at Muirfield Village. Seve was playing out of a fairway bunker, when Dave Marr piped up and recalled his '83 bunker shot.
Seve was incredible; it was a shame, that after '88, he just couldn't keep the ball in play, and then to lose his short game. In his prime, he was the best
Back when golfers wte not all about themselves. i love how they tallk to each other about their swings afytewr they teed off......would have loved to been walking with them
We were all awestruck with Seve's effortless swing in the 80's. He made it look so easy. He looks so comfortable. Nicklaus always looked like he was trying and concentrating so hard, as if his life depended on it. He made golf look difficult. Just look at the agonizing way Nicklaus crouches over the ball with his putter in the most uncomfortable posture I've ever seen.
I'm actually reading Nicklaus' book "Golf My Way" right now. Excellent book. Nicklaus was able to articulate most of the concepts of the modern golf swing and share his ideas and "feels." Not sure if Seve ever distilled and shared his ideas about the swing in a book. Maybe he didn't understand or think about it in the way that a more cerebral, analytical man like Nicklaus. I doubt that Nicklaus derived the same kind of pleasure from playing golf professionally as Ballesteros did. Swashbuckling Seve looked like he was having more fun. While Nicklaus was all business. Get it done and then fly back home to West Palm Beach and play tennis, spend time with family or design golf courses. And put some ice on that neck from stooping over putts.
Steve Pete You need to find a topic with which you have some familiarity. To say Jack was all business and didn't have a blast playing professional golf could not be further from the truth. The one thing you do know is that he crouched over his putts. And that would be it.
That "uncomfortable" posture won 18 majors. In putting there is no right way. You putt with what works best for you. I think he bent over that far because he could feel the line better from there. Nobody can teach feel but you can encourage using it. Too many mechanical men out there today.
Dana Starbuck Seve had the Masters in his grasp that year, briefly 3 shots clear after his eagle at 13 but his heart, soul and ball sank to the bottom if the lake at 15. I still have one eye open for his 1983 bunker shot. I AGAIN contacted the PGA of America but AGAIN they do not reply!!! Some day, some day...
The people to ask would really be the ABC network who broadcast the event. But their coverage was very limited that year due to lack of interest, so don't get your hopes up. If it existed they'd surely have unearthed it by now.
jack nicklaus hit a one iron at the 1975 us pga at firestone in the words of his playing partner roger maltbie "i never saw a shot like it-it was a skyscraper"
Right on, today's clubs (especially the drivers) are ok for women and children and the very elderly, but not for grown men under say the age of 60 or so.
Unfortunately hitting straight drives is kind of important in golf. That's like saying if Ken Griffey Jr. would've hit the ball higher and farther he'd be the all-time home run leader. Don't get me wrong I loved watching Seve play but Jack is the best there was or will be.
Ken who? Hitting straight drives isn't important the top pro's shape their shots to fit the hole, fades draws etc.Regarding Jack I beg to differ, although I am biased being British. I think Seve for those few years when he was no 1 in the world was the greatest. Tiger and Jack are close seconds.
I guess I misinterpreted straight for meaning accurate. Since you're British I'm guessing you don't follow baseball....Ken Griffey Jr. hit a lot of home runs but not the most. You're correct, for a short time Seve was the greatest but over a career there's little doubt the greatest ever is Jack. By the way if you haven't seen it check out Seve The Movie. Very well done. Cheers.
You get this argument in all sports, when legends from different generations are pitted against each other. I occasionally watch baseball but my US sports passion is for basketball - what a great NBA finals! Yes I will check out 'Seve the Movie' thanks for the heads up mate.
I love their relaxed attitudes and conversations. And they didn’t hit down taking the turf so much like nowadays. Jack asked Seve what iron he used. Was that allowed at that time?
Jack really wanted to know how Seve is able to pull off such sweet shots... because he is using kickarse Supremo's thats why, deep down by the 80's Jack was thinking Macgregor is making junk, so was jealous of Seve's sweet Supremo blades!
Sevi was a great player, but had to depend on his short game, as he was wild off the tee. Jack could absorb any of the barbs, being the most successful golfer of his time.
@@stevedriscoll2539 I think he was being serious too. Just made me laugh. Not sure where he heard that from - the idea that Dublin was the first capital of Ohio.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, it's not a penalty if Seve shows his club volunterely but it's a penalty to Jack if Jack asks to see it. Does that sound right??
It's a penalty for both the person asking for advice and for the person giving advice, advice being, "any counsel or suggestion which could influence a player in determining his play, the choice of a club, or the method of making a stroke." Although Jack was being a little cheeky here and technically asked what brand of clubs Seve was playing these days, not necessarily which club. He later said quite clearly, 'Well, if Seve was hitting a 5 I need at least a 3.' A bit of a joke I think.
@@Master...deBater You're so kind with your soft-spoken words. 1986 was not that long ago in my life, junior. I recall hitting my 4 iron 190 yards in 1986, and I'm not a championship golfer.

jack never bogeyed a final hole to lose in a regular pga event- but did it here.
I think if Seve was a straight driver he would have surpassed Jack's major haul.
Brilliant footage added to favourites
Yes I will check out 'Seve the Movie' thanks for the heads up mate.
kingshearer2 that's why seve won more majors than jack. Wow
Golfers of that era did not wear hats. And the hair was much longers.
Except in 1980 Masters, everyone wore a big clumsy baseball cap.
@Tony The majority of pros shaved their hairy balls before the 1987 masters
Nicklaus did not like this I think..losing at the last hole.. :-)
I love their relaxed attitudes and conversations. And they didn’t hit down taking the turf so much like nowadays.
Jack asked Seve what iron he used. Was that allowed at that time?
Was, and still is, allowed in exhibition matches.
Nothing sounds like a pured persimmons .
2 class acts no doubt about it
not Jack
i would like to see golf stars like... Rory. Phil, Tiger etc play with the clubs those guys used
Tiger wouldn't have as many Majors i'd bet
lol at Jack at the beginning. No, Dublin (OH) was not the first capital of Ohio nor was it ever a capital.
I thought Jack was being serious. So he was just trying to be funny?
@@stevedriscoll2539 I think he was being serious too. Just made me laugh. Not sure where he heard that from - the idea that Dublin was the first capital of Ohio.
when seve revealed his club to jack before he tee'ed off ,,just curious if that is a penalty ? great to watch all the same
Correct me if I'm mistaken, it's not a penalty if Seve shows his club volunterely but it's a penalty to Jack if Jack asks to see it. Does that sound right??
i recon so . thanks all the same
It's a penalty for both the person asking for advice and for the person giving advice, advice being, "any counsel or suggestion which could influence a player in determining his play, the choice of a club, or the method of making a stroke." Although Jack was being a little cheeky here and technically asked what brand of clubs Seve was playing these days, not necessarily which club. He later said quite clearly, 'Well, if Seve was hitting a 5 I need at least a 3.' A bit of a joke I think.

They weren’t allowed to line up thier ball for putting ??
The greatest golfer in history hitting a 4 iron 180 yards?
46 years old...loft and shaft length of a modern 5-6 iron...and balls 20-30 yards shorter than modern balls!?! Do you know anything about golf???
@@Master...deBater You're so kind with your soft-spoken words. 1986 was not that long ago in my life, junior. I recall hitting my 4 iron 190 yards in 1986, and I'm not a championship golfer.
@@batswbennett I'm calling BS on that claim!!! And certainly at 46 years old you couldn't! But even if it were true...there are plenty of hacks who can hit a modern 4 iron 200+ yards...but can't break par! I personally know a guy who hits his driver 320yds...but can't even break 80 lol. What does any of that prove? Nothing except that you clearly know nothing about golf!!!
@@Master...deBaterWe're talking about the greatest golfer in history at age 46 hitting a 4 iron I80 yards. We're not talking about scoring. You're not very good at this. I do have more knowledge of golf and life in general than you do in your puny millennial manhood. You apparently know your own ego, Gomer. Now, go away, boy.
Tiger is arguably a better golfer but he could still learn a lot from jack! What a great champion and role model!
Jack vs seve or tiger vs phil? Jack and seve for me, every time!
Seve, never in trouble
